What can take you from 19th-century Austria to the set of Star Trek in 10 seconds? Music can.

Join Tom Allen and the Gryphon Trio for a stroll through the labyrinthine halls of Paul Hahn's piano studio in Toronto, as we use one long shot, a few shiny hints and a very sneaky piano player to take you from Beethoven's Vienna to the Starship Enterprise with nothing more than one little melody and some cheap costumes.

Watch the video above to trace the surprising musicial origins of the Star Trek theme.

Very clever, and, er, "fascinating."  I had not made the Star Trek connection before this, but of course now it is obvious. :-)

Well done CBC and Tom Allen!  More of this, please.

Love this! This is exactly why I listen to CBC and what give it value like no other broadcaster. Thanks Tom and everyone that worked this witty and entertaining segment.

Fabluous! I tuned in after the into and the Star Trek got me by *total* surprise. That was hysterical.

I love when Tom does music theory. Tom, you are a wonderful teacher. I miss your "In the shadows".

Loved it.  And in costume yet.  Also loved the little homage to Hitchcock in the continuous shot.
