Transgender Dysphoria Blues
Stream to Jan. 20
Floridian punks Against Me! will release their sixth studio album on Jan. 21. Transgender Dysphoria Blues is the band's first album since 2010, as well as being the first album since lead singer and guitarist Laura Jane Grace announced that she was transgender, and would begin living as a woman in 2012. (For the first 15 years of the band's existence, Grace had been living as a man, Tom Gabel.)
The new release started as a concept album about a transgender sex worker, but wound up being inspired by Grace's own struggles with gender dysphoria, something she's suffered with since childhood.
Sonically, the album has the band sounding heavier than they did on 2010's White Crosses.
"I don’t know if ‘brutal’ is the right word, but it just sounds really f--king tough, and good," former bassist Andrew Seward said in an interview with Spin.
