As soon as summer hits, everyone goes a bit crazy about the official song of the summer. We're guilty here at CBC Music just as much as anyone else. In fact, there's a whole contest on right now that is trying to pick the Canadian indie song of the summer. The long list is announced today, and you can vote for the short list by clicking on the link below.

Vote for the short list.

But you know what else is fun in the summer? Math! So obviously, the only logical thing to do is to combine summer songs and mathematical(ish) graphs. We've taken lyrics from some of the biggest songs of the last few years and graphed them out in the gallery above for you to guess. All you need to do is click through and get learning.

And I know we've already mentioned it, but don't forget to see what songs made it to the second round of our CBC Music Song of Summer contest. You'll find the 40 songs on the long list, as well as voting for the short list.

This is the topic of conversation today on CBC Radio 3 with hosts Talia Schlanger, Lana Gay and Alanna Stuart. What are the most memorable lyrics to your favourite summer songs? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @cbcradio3.

Good Morning Freinds!!  I'm gonna vent a little here.  Sorry about this but...WTF is this blog about??  I am very confused and irritated by this blog topic.  It may also be partly due to my lack of pop culture knowledge but that is why i go to R3 because i don't give a shit about pop culture.

Hey everyone! I think the blog post is all about boosting support for our R3 playlist family in the Song of the Summer contest. We've got a couple R3 faves in the running - Paper Lions, The Courtneys and Pistol George Warren so make sure you vote for 'em so we have some great indie representation in the contest!!

@markgage - What do you want it to be about? I too know very little about pop culture. Except for references to maybe the 3 tv shows I watch, most of it flies right overt head. It would be nice if blog topics followed current events in the music world

@Tea&C -- no internet at home?  Not an option.  Not for me, or the rest of my family.  In today's digital world, where we get our music and movies and books and video games and seemingly everything else from the internet, I just couldn't imagine it.

I guess it would be like getting rid of your telephone at home, back in the late 80s.  Although, I could certainly dump our home hard-line phone these days.

@GarfieldUK [#025] -- what about a new daily segment, like a "blogger's playlist" where we can all submit a playlist for play on-air.  Maybe just enough to fit in-between host breaks; we could even leave a 30-45s voice mail on the answering machine they could play before or after the set.  Kind of like a micro- Co-host thingy.  Cost to CBC: $0.00 -- we'd just have to make sure that of the five(?) songs we've added to the playlist, that three have to be from within the past six months.

Who will discipline athletes who show support of gays at the Olympic™ Sport Games™ Encounters in Sochi?

The IOC, that's who.

"Gay Star News asked the global Olympic bosses what they were planning to do to ‘make sure the LGBT community in Russia can have a visible, proud, safe presence at the games’.

But the IOC replied the games were not the place for ‘political’ statements. Any participant who steps out of line may be punished, not by the Russians but by Olympic chiefs themselves."

And: "Clause 50 states the penalty for violation can be ‘disqualification or withdrawal of the accreditation of the person concerned’ without appeal." Source

For one, the library is way cheaper and more fun.

Second, do I really need that much "information" about, say, what other movies Warwick Davis was in?

Third, when I've had no internet in the past, I just go to a cafe/library with my macbook and use the internet there for all my Warwick Davis updates. Again cheaper and nice to see other humans and it comes with coffee.

141: I think this is the new R3. Evidence: the only one to retain his personal space -- before paternity leave -- was Grant. Everyone else was shunted, and even when Lana came back from exile, she'd lost the personal brand on her segment.

To me, it's evident that it was decided, but of course we were never told about it, that it would be much preferable, and cheaper, to "generify" programming hosts, which facilitates their turnover, makes them interchangeable as to time slots, and makes it less expensive for R3 -- I'm sure that Talia isn't paid like Grant is, or like the other "permanent" hosts (Craig, Lisa, etc.) were.

@TheRadioHead et al,

It is telling that right off the bat there was such a sound rejection of today's topic from a bunch of people who are normally so amicable (not the usual whiners, like me). It's almost contempt for the audience to keep ramming this (endless votes, megablogs, no host interaction, no personality) down our throats instead of listening to feedback from listeners.

I get the megablog though - with less than ~400 comments a day on the all day blog it doesn't really justify 3 separate host blogs per day.  There are all kinds of things that make it so that there are fewer comments (I think a big one is host interaction, and that, I think, stems from Grant not being around.  Grant's shows always had more posts than the others, even when the lineup was Craig/Grant/Lana and he was always the most active on the blog - from my experience anyway).  But I can see why its always one blog topic per day now.

I'm getting pretty tired of the votes and the lists though.  Its like there is some social media guru in there telling them that this is what the kids want these days...

Isn't everything always wonky in summer, though? Or at least for the past few summers.

Grant was away last year doing the Wild Side on R1, hosts always take that time for breaks. There are a lot more guest hosts or rotating chairs.

243: people write back? Really?

I wonder, then, why such info was not put up on this blog, for general use. After all, it's no secret people here have been asking questions for months.

Me, I once got a mail from someone at R3 on this, I don't exactly remember which person, and it contained some info, but precious little. Mostly, defensive, same arguments as proffered by Craig (unkindly put: we hunt for the web cohort, you bloggies are an infinitesimal count), and p.r. stuff.

Nobody has ever addressed the degradation of (perceived?) quality, to my knowledge.

Generally, here on the blog, we're public-relationed by R3. That is worth nothing to me.

(Not in such a bad mood, make no mistake, but I've yet to be re-impressed. And my standards aren't that high. hence the negativity of this post.)

300: The Pack a.d. is playing a Sunday 4:20 (yes) show at the Black Sheep in a few weeks. Sept. 15.

VERY WEIRD.

Sunday at the Sheep is bring-your-kids day ('cause alcohol regs allow), show-during-the-day day (which freaks out some bands, who a) have to be awake and playing, so early in the day, and b) can actually see the audience, whoaaaa, etc. Fun time to have a show, though.

But a folk show, usually. The Pack a.d. (with openers Hydrovents) is very strange.

390 - I live right by a grocery store that used to be called Central Meat Market.

They've since changed the name to Central Fresh Market, much more appropriate.

@Blog

Re: Megablogs - I think they actually generate less total comments because the people in the east post their morning comment, then the blog is stale for the rest of the day.

Re: Voting/Polls - I know they generate web site traffic and that everyone is doing it, but I started listening to R3 because they were NOT doing what everyone else was.  Plus, endless votes are annoying.

Re: "Changes Coming" - We were told this before...back when we were all happily nestled in the nice cosy basement watching our track listing operate properly and having the ability to see what was coming up and what had previously been played.

Rant Over...for today ;)

@kirk - that's a shame, the motorleague are a top notch group of fellers but it's true, our tastes are only occasionally overlapping.

Tom,

I don't necessarily think they're bad, just like so many other bands. Like, that song and the song played after it were pretty indistinguishable to me.

But it's probably more of a taste thing.

@KoD, #400 - not an argument but a taste test, to determine a little something: How do you feel about this Chris Kelly song? Is it distinguishable from other songs to you?

Because I kind of feel like it sounds like all the rest of the typical indie stuff, blending in rather well, to me at least.

James Younger...... Monday Morning....

Anytime that R3 wants to stop playing this song, I'm pretty ok with that. It's literally on everytime I "check in" with my ears, for 30 minutes a day.

@PJ - #406 -  I figure they are adding more dates...I mean, there isn't a Toronto or Montreal date yet.  There is a Calgary date though...you going on a road trip?  If they don't add anymore dates, I think my closest show is Buffalo.

Tom,

I get what you mean. I was going to include examples of you finding the stuff I like indistinguishable, but was too lazy/nonconfrontational.

I like the Chris Kelly song/album, but I've liked his stuff since Analog Bell Service.

This James Younger song, on the other hand? Meh.

I have found that with many genres/types of music. Someone who doesn't particularly like said genre will say it all sounds the same. To the person who likes it, this is usually not the case.

@Kirk - Fair enough (for the record, I don't dislike Chris Kelly's stuff).

This is what's neat about the R3 though, that people with pretty different musical tastes can find common ground on one station.

@binsy - well, you know. I'm a sucker for a club banger.

405: voices like that are important for a very reverse reason: they give voice to untrue statements which can then be seen for what they are. Like her statement which basically says there are no gays or lesbians in Russia. (Which statement is well replied to in the article by another sports figure.)

Pearl Jam

Chicago show would have been great

For those that haven't gone, go to venue the day of the show pickup some cheap seats (barter) and see one of the best shows around (for commercial type bands)

I'm not sold on the new single.  It's good and will be good live.  I like the stuff they did when they experimented (No code, Yield, Binaural (little))

Not going on a road trip to Calgary, I was going to but going to Hawaii at that time, I know life is rough! Surfing and snorkling will be good, maybe I'll crank up a little PJ down there! Might go good with the "killa buds" LOL

Budweiser is the big winner in sending people to "Emergency"

"When the Hopkins researchers surveyed ER patients who’d been drinking, they found that Budweiser was the number one brand consumed, followed Steel Reserve Malt Liquor, Colt 45 malt liquor, Bud Ice (another malt liquor), Bud Light, and a discount-priced vodka called Barton’s.

Though Budweiser has 9.1 percent of the national beer market, it represented 15 percent of the of the E.R. “market.” The disparity was even more pronounced for Steel Reserve. It has only .8 percent of the market nationally, but accounted for 14.7 percent of the E.R. market. In all, Steel Reserve, Colt 45, Bud Ice, and another malt liquor, King Cobra, account for only 2.4 percent of the U.S. beer market, but accounted for 46 percent of the beer consumed by E.R. patients."
