Tegan and Sara Quin, the twin-sister, singer-songwriter duo from Calgary, Alta., couldn't have asked for a better 2013. After releasing six albums over the course of 10 years, building a devout fanbase based on their consistent output and collaborations with artists as diverse as Against Me! and DJ Tiesto, they put out Heartthrob at the beginning of 2013, and nothing's been the same since.
Recorded with the intention of making a more commercial, pop-oriented album, Heartthrob rocketed the sisters to fame, with lead single "Closer" being the first song of theirs to get certifed platinum in Canada. That was followed by "I Was a Fool," which went gold.
Needless to say, the decision to reach for the mainstream was a good one, but it never came at the expense of quality, especially when it came to their writing. Not surprisingly, Heartthrob has been shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize, with the winner being announced Sept. 23 at a gala in Toronto.
