The history of any major prize or award is littered with questionable decisions. Citizen Kane didn't win best picture at the Oscars. Queen was overlooked by the Grammys. The Band, Great Big Sea and 54-40 have never won Juno Awards.

Each year, the Polaris Music Prize is awarded by jury to the best Canadian album regardless of sales, label or genre of music. Now that it is in its eighth year, we decided that it was time to take a look back at some of its most notable oversights.

Take a look at our gallery above and tell us: what do you think have been Polaris's biggest snubs? Let us know by posting on our blog below, tweeting us @cbcradio3 or listen to the conversation today on CBC Radio 3 with Grant Lawrence.

Also, check back here for coverage of the Polaris Music Prize short list announcement.

#1 - i agree with that. i'll have to amend my opinion tomorrow, after Whitehorse probably doesn't make it again. it's not what i want but there's never been much Doucet love in Polaris territory despite him being rather a master of the complete album with a theme & a purpose (see Blood's Too Rich not getting noticed)

This will be my first and last (totally predictable) comment on this year's Polaris, but the fact that Propagandhi's Failed States wasn't even long-listed is the second worst thing I have ever heard.

Carrieg, you can't pick workshops with sing songwriters. I could be impolite about their limited musical skills but that wouldn't be nice.

Every workshop we went to was stellar, simply over the top with creativity and fun.  A Tribe Called Red, Afro Kumbe and Blue King Brown was mind blowing.  Skilled musicians feeding off each other and creating on the fly.

I have great respect for the musical skills of the Tribe Called Red DJ's, their timing is impeccable.

Aside from enjoying the artist, the workshop was boring in most cases except for yesterday when 17 musicians playing together at a small stage in the woods proved an amazing feast!

@jdurley - That's the one!  There is a baby grand piano in the corner and on Sundays there is sometimes someone there to tinkle the ivories (note to Grant, I did not say tickle the ovaries, they ain't playing Bahamas here).

Listening to Chopin or Rachmaninoff in that setting improves the taste of food (well, that's my theory).

Hey Blog-lovelies!  WFF was the best!  All those years where I avoided festivals because of crowds/heat/bugs etc., and here I am home safe and sound: no heatstroke, no bug bites (not even one!), and like @carrieg a heart so full it's bursting!

Thanks so much to @Shonica and the Tarp King (aka Mike), Chris and Cailey, my partner-in-crime @carrieg, the original instigator and my hero @TRH, @darbarspecial (yep kindred spirits, just like I suspected!), @WildWildWestcrunch (so happy to see her!), Mackenzie and Travis and each and every one of you who are complicit in the joy simply by your existence!

Musical highlights: too many to recount but there were my old favs who didn't disappoint (Josh Ritter, Colin Meloy, the Avett Brothers, Whitehorse, Aidan Knight, Rose Cousins, Del Barber) and there were so many new-to-me-blew-me-away moments: Patrick Watson!  Cat Empire!  Xavier Rudd!  Sara Watkins!  Tin Pan Orange!

First, definitely not my last WFF experience I can tell you that right here and now.  My final word on the way it was organized and the time that I had: everything was so civilized: even the wasted youth were loving and sweet.  Amazing.

Plus @CarrieG saved a girl's life -- if you ever need someone to help out in an emergency: she's your girl!

I could go on but I think you get the gist which is, in a nutshell, YAY!

@jdurley - Museum wise you can hit the Science museum and the Natural History museum at the same time as the V&A, they are basically on the same block.  I'd also put some time aside for the National Gallery.  All of the those museums are free, which like CBC R3, make it the bargain of the century.

I'd avoid the London Eye, it's great for the first half (going up) but boring on the second half (going down, no Grant not in *that* way).  If you want to get an overview of the city then the Shard is probably the best bet but it is eye-wateringly expensive for what it is.

If you like whisky, and let's face it, who doesn't, you should check out Albannach.  It's the other side of Trafalgar Square from the National Gallery and looks out to Canada House so you can partake in a verse of O Canada whilst enjoying a dram.

If you are going to the Globe then a) rent the cushion, trust me, your bottom will thank me for it later.  I'd walk down the South Bank to the Globe, start at the Houses of Parliament and then cross the bridge and head towards the London Eye and enjoy the riverside walk.  Lot's going on down there and plenty of arty things to see and do.

Did Polaris get too big for CBC radio3?

Not one for conspiracies, but it is odd that after this many years no band from outside of Toronto/Dundas and Montreal has won. Didn't realize that. Hmmmm.....

You can look up the number for a vet, or the emergency vet and call any of them. I have called about my dog before (I left home and he was skinny, and I got home and his stomach was all bloated. Bloat is a top killer in dogs, so I called to ask if I should be worried and bring him in. I wasn't a fan of The Suburbs.

Nor this song...

To rework a quote: "To me, religion The Suburbs is like Paul Rudd. I see the appeal, and I would never take it away from anyone. But I would also never stand in line for it. "

Colin Stetson.  It's a prize for creativity and diversity. And this fits that criteria.

Arcade Fire openly said that The Suburbs was a stripped down more simple album, it was missing all the wonderful musical parts of their previous works.  Plus they made it nostalgic which totally hooked into the current pop culture obsession, this made it more easily accessible to a larger audience,.  They should have won  every industry prize they did win that year because it was marketing genius.  But not a creative prize.

Month Of May is the best song on that album.

@Fresh Ginger  I am not sure that you will like Propagandhi.

And I am glad that 2 Bit Blues is nominated this year.

I guess I outed myself that I haven't actually looked at the long list.  As I said, Polaris has disappointed me, plus I am waiting for the short list to see if there is anything I want to invest emotion in.  Because it is intense and emotional if you decided to go for it.  For me, anyways.

Yup, Colin Stetson is brilliant.  That is why he didn't win, he's too hard to get. And that's why an album designed to be appealing did win.

Even Polaris can't escape being a popularity contest, though to a lesser degree for sure.

It's a prize for creativity and diversity.  And that so often is not even part of the conversation.

I'm glad there's jurors and not a free for all.
