Summer highlights? Definitely the Keloha Festival in Kelowna. Two stages right on the Okanagan Lake? Perfect. Matt & Kim surprised me with how fun/awesome they were, but Mutemath absolutely blew me away. Such energy and craziness, including the lead singer doing handstands on his keyboard, and crowd surfing on a large air mattress. Arkells & The Trews were pretty badass, as well, and there were plenty of R3 bands, too; Yukon Blonde, The Matinee, The Zolas...

Also a highlight? Khatsahlano. And Brasstronaut. And Sam playing the Game of Thrones theme on his clarinet.

I haven't been to any music festivals yet this summer, none that I remember anyway. I've got the Brandon Folk Fest and the Regina Folk Fest on the ol' docket for the upcoming weeks though.

Gateway Fest in Bengough Sask is going to be a really good one but it conflicts with my other one that I'm going to.

Highlight summer fest wise to date is definitely Field Trip. I had Anthems of a Seventeen Year Old by BSS stuck in my head for days afterwards. If any of you bloggers live in Quebec, theres a small fest at the Owl's Head mountain the last weekend of July. No one knows about this festival, so very few people go. Last year there were about 20-30 of us rocking out to an amazing set by Half Moon Run. The year before The Trews did an awesome acoustic set. Best part: Its free! Unless you want to go to the DJ stage at the top of the hill. It costs $5 for unlimited chairlift rides for the day (or I guess you could hike up for free). The Owls Head fest is always a highlight of my summer.

As much as I loved Keloha, Kelowna is douche-central. I have never seen as many bros and plastic people in the same place in my life.

The one anecdote I keep going back to: at one of the official afterparty shows* I was at a bar, Fernando's, watching Willhorse when a group of bros came in. And each one felt the need to alert the bar to their presence loudly WHOOing or yelling.

And one guy was ACTUALLY humping the air as he came in. I didn't realise these things actually happened in real life.

*after the main festival happened, they had a minifestival at night, with a bunch of bands playing various small pub/nightclub venues around the city.

i enjoyed that it immensely. i also may have said "What? its not like you're going to need those later"

piano....Patrick Watson was a treat to see - he amazed me as they showed him on the big screen - arms flying over and pounding the keys!!!  incredible!

@TRH - agreed on the singer / songwriter....you did tell me of some great ones you two took in.  I'm drawn to the singer / songwriter, but for workshops will keep that in mind for VFF this weekend.

I feel guilty saying this, but I don't have a lot of interest in attending the big music festivals. I like Home County because it's small, and NXNE because I can still see shows in small venues. I'm not much for crowds, not being to escape the weather (especially heat) or camping with a lot of other people.

But that's just me...
