No Evening Hymns is a travesty.

I like that GY!BE, Metric, Whitehorse, and Young Galaxy made it.

I don't like Purity Ring, but they are probably going to win, since they're this year's "big buzz bang" and everyone seems to like the bleepy bloop right now.

Congrats to those shortlisted.

I'm *really* disappointed to see that Evening Hymn didn't make the cut but Tegan and Sara did, with what is arguably their weakest album to date.  Not sure how I feel about GY!BE or Metric making it, again, I feel that they both have much stronger albums in their back catalogues and neither nominated album is hugely stellar IMHO.

That said, I am really enjoying Young Galaxy and Purity Ring so hopefully one of them go on to win, especially as it will break the geographic hold that Ontario / Quebec have had on previous winners.

I am sad that neither Rah Rah nor Hannah made it, but I didn't expect them to, since they're not from Ontario or Quebec.

(I looked at the list, aside from Purity ring, who are from "Edmonton/Halifax" and T&S from Vancouver, everyone else is ON or QC. 80% of the list.)

The Polaris Short list is what it is I have no comment on it because I don't really care. But I will check out the couple acts I don't know.

I feel like the Polaris is really turning into an "Old Boys Club" - there's a lot of the same acts or associated acts year after year. It's kind of predictable.

And the fact that Tegan and Sara made the list for their intentionally commercially crafted record seems a little silly but what the fuck do I know?

In the comment I made just now, above, I said "I don't really care" but I want to clarify that it's not the Polaris I don't care about, I find it interesting and I like the discussion it gets going (for the most part) but it's the list of nominees both long and short list, that I don't care about. It could be anybody and that's fine with me. I don't have vested interests in who's on there and who's snubbed because when I'm honest with myself, most of what I listen to on a regular basis is snubbed by critics anyway.

With CBC Music's leaning more to mainstream culture (Junos) I was very afraid Polaris would be gone. Second, if hardcore band METZ made the list, why not Propagandhi? Makes me think Grant has a point about regional preferences. Last, I am terrified with T&S on that list.

@KoD 83 - I feel that is somewhat of an oversimplification. Artists can and do change the direction of their art on a regular basis. They must or they will not be around for very long. If an artist makes a change in a direction that the majority of their listeners don't understand or appreciate they are accused of being self serving and abandoning their fan base. If they choose to go in a more popular direction they are accused of selling out. To play devil's advocate perhaps Tegan and Sara chose that direction because they liked it. And who could blame a Canadian Indie artist for wanting to achieve some degree of financial success. Most barely eek out a living.

@Stevie. Agreed. People bash T&S for 'selling out' to get more sucess, which they did get, but respect K'naan for doing the exact same thing. However, in his case it failed and he wrote an article lamenting his trying to reach a broader audience.

i like Tegan and Sara, so i'm biased in that respect.  while i'm not crazy about the sound they've chosen for this album, i think the songs are consistent with their catalogue and are good pop songs,  but i wouldn't have expected them on the short list for the same reason a lot of my favourite pop and rock albums are not here.  back to the lab to tinker with my artistic merit predictor.  T&S and Metric are the only albums on the list that i've heard in their entirety.

i'd love it if there were a polaris shortlist channel on cbc music.  but i suppose record companies my not love it.

But for whatever reason, when this song comes on I always think, "what the fuck is R3 doing playing Blink 182?"

But things are pretty good for him already, so maybe I should cheer for an underdog?  I will have to think about this - or go back to being ambivalent.

They have changed their sound over the course of their years... although it's always been pretty technical, they went from a "sloppier" style of skate punk to the more thrash influenced style they play now. It all melds pretty nicely honestly, it's not like they are two different bands but If you  listen to their absolute classic album How To Clean Everything and followed it up with Potemkin City Limits, you'll notice a huge difference.

Great band. Should be mentioned in the same breath as Bad Religion, NOFX et al. as being one of the true originals of punk rock.

Problems with bear dude from this mornings blog post have progressed

Synopsis: An old friend who i haven't see in a long time lives in a town I am heading to see some music, so I flipped him a text to say I'd be in town and we should grab a beer. He responded promptly, but has started calling himself 'bobby the bear' (I changed the exact name), invited me back to his 'hollow' and said he'd wear his best pelt. He's in his 50s.

I didn't check my phone all morning, and now there are a heap of messages from him getting creepier and creepier. the last one describes his state of dress (or lack there of).

How can I stop this without coming of like a dick?

hey everyone,

Jon Dixon, way back at 60, you asked about "my wife and my's first date." Simple rule of thumb when things are joined by an 'and' is that each side of the and should be correct on its own. So, when you say something like "Joe and me went to the store" it's not correct because you would never say "me went to the store" unless you're the Hulk or something.

so, I think, for your phrase above, it should be "my wife's and my first date," although that's a little clunky still. "My first date with my wife" is a little smoother

when I first started paying attention to Polaris it was, the year Caribou won? (they won, right? maybe the year after?) and I thought "hey, this is really cool!"

but as I've continued to watch, I notice a lot of repetition. Maybe the bands that just have to release an album and it's automatically on the short list ARE really that good -what do I know? I only know what I like.

but these days, I go to the long list and sift through it and listen to stuff and decide whether or not to buy a few, and then largely ignore it after that.

Was Born Ruffians Birthmarks not qualified for Polaris? April 1, 2013? A very strong effort I thought, not even long listed.

Second of all... Jill is fine, thank you for your concern.

@Canadajanes   So glad you like Propagandhi.  And it's a grower, I think you will like it even more.

Going back to what I said earlier about Polaris being regional.  Maybe the guy from Slagging Off was more correct than we like to think.  The example of METZ v Prop.  With METZ, pne maybe even 2 of them work for the Arts and Crafts label, hence scenesters.  Propagandhi, are outside the region and outside the scene, they don't play that game in any way.  Just thinking.

I have to skip out for half an hour, great afternoon of listening Lana.  Not boring in any way ;)  Plus now I know that Jesse With The Long Name that does a lot of writing for CBC Music is a boy.

I don't think there's a regional bias, but I think portions of the country are underrepresented.

Eight of ten albums from Ontario or Quebec? The only winner not from Montreal or Toronto was also from Ontario?

Bias? No. Ontario/Quebec-centric? Maybe.

I suspect that the preponderance of Toronto/Montreal artists in the Polaris short list is a reflection of the Music Industry in Canada. I would wager that a similar award show in the States would reflect most of the artists were either from NY or LA (unless it's Country in which case it would be Nashville).

@krib - well, I have to admit to some limited knowledge. I have maybe not invested as much time in them as I should as I wasn't a big Emily Haines solo fan.but I think they're more committed to lyrics than some of the other maybe 'non-folky' acts.  I'm really fond of Gimme Sympathy. all the multitude of versions. those are great multi-layered lyrics.

Binsy/Kirk - I found Vancouver pretty stinky when I moved here (one very hot August).  Victoria has pretty much zero heavy industry and constant breeze to blow away any city smell.

T&C - you know what smells better than Victoria in October? Salt Spring in September.  I maintain it is the combination of Garry Oak meadows and beaches, both of which smell good. Combine salty sea breeze with dry grass and you get a lovely smell.

(I am glad the blog understands the cities have seasonal smells)

@Snarf: yeah, there would be several fun options within the country. I think working my way west might be the most cost effective, though. Plus, it's been a while.
