Canada Day seems the perfect occasion to take stock of how much our national identity informs the music made by some of our country’s best artists.

Be it Canada's wild, natural beauty, the diverse landscapes, long treks between gigs or any of the other hundreds of ways our country reveals itself in the music, the gallery above makes one thing clear: Canada is full of surprises, challenges and wonder.

On behalf of CBC Music and these incredible musicians, happy Canada Day.

Hugh Segal and other Conservative senators show some guts

Remember when that Cons. MP resigned, because his bill (which would have mandated disclosure of salaries of fed. pub. servants paid more than $100,000) had been gutted (threshold raised to $444,661)?

Well, there was a private member's bill before the Senate that would have forced (among other things) disclosure of UNION salaries above $100,000. Was successfully amended (against the gvt's wishes) to a $444,661 threshold, and sent back to the now non-sitting House of Commons. Thus delayed or killed outright (ifd new session in the Fall).

So, for once, sauce for the goose = sauce for the gander. Good for the Senate showing more sense than the Harper gvt.!

The best of the responses from Canadian Musicians above was Cam Penner. I found the response from John K. I didn't say it was going to happen, I said things would make more sense. Growing up in the maritimes, I felt more of a connection to the boston states than I did to the prairies or ontario. And until 1867 when Ontario got all "hey we're the boss now", that's how trade and commerce worked. Putting the capital in Ottawa killed all that.

I saw the funniest 30 Rock the other day where Jack and Avery are trying to get out of Canada and back to the U.S. so they don't have their baby in Canada!

Also saw a Daily Show bit on Canadian Banking policies vs. U.S. Banking policies (Our banks suck!)

On Radio One today, they had an interview, with the Ontario Judge (first openly gay as well) who performed the first same sex marriage 10 years ago. Ontario b.t.w. was the first place in North America. He was being interviewed about an American couple whom he wed, who have recently won a ruling in the US providing them equal rights.
