It started as a very Canadian game for music fans and beer lovers alike: CBC Music's Grant Lawrence challenged you to mash up a Canadian band name with a beer style under the hashtag #CDNbandbeer. You responded with names like Nickelbock, Elliott Brewed and Barley Rae Jepsen.

Our senior designer, Ben Didier, came up with a set of potential labels inspired by a few of the best band beer puns. Before long, Old Yale Brewing's Jeremy Sibley was recruiting members of B.C.’s vibrant craft beer community to help make them a reality, including R&B Brewing Co., Townsite Brewing and Cannery Brewing.

Every Friday, from May 17 until June 7, a new Canadian band beer will hit shelves at private liquor stores in B.C. Click the images below to preview the labels.

D.O.Ale by Old Yale Brewing Co.
(Inspired by D.O.A)

Available May 17, this medium-bodied, classic brown ale balances its hop and malt flavours with subtle hints of chocolate. The slightly malty, lightly hopped finish has a touch of bitterness from the smooth Goldings hops. At five per cent ABV, it makes for a great session beer.

You Say Barley We Say Rye by R&B Brewing Co.
(Inspired by You Say Party)

Available May 24, this delicious IPA offers a hearty, complex flavour and aroma that is both aggressive and well balanced, reminiscent of rye or pumpernickel bread. Brewed with a generous amount of specialty malts, including U.K. pale malt and malted rye, and rounded out with a lavish quantity of hops.

Said the Ale by Townsite Brewing Inc.
(Inspired by Said the Whale)

Available May 31, this Belgian-style pale ale is brewed on the Sunshine Coast along the shores of the Salish Sea. At 5.8 per cent ABV, it’s an easy spring sipper. The low hop aroma and slightly bitter finish complement a complex background loaded with the fruity flavours of pear and orange.

Pink Mountainhops by Cannery Brewing Co.
(Inspired by Pink Mountaintops)

In Germany, maibocks are traditionally consumed in the lusty month of May. This strong, dry-hopped maibock is a full-bodied, German-style lager. Created with classic German malts and noble hops, it is a malt-forward beer with a surprising hop complexity. Available June 7.

I've never heard the unibroue thought before but i guess it's possible. those tall bottles are only $1.99 at TJ's. great deal

& i get the Name Tag sometimes, which is their version of like PBR. It's fine for a cheap beer ($3.50 a 5). better than Bud or Lite or most of that.

While I (obviously?) appreciate original material (particularly) written by the performing artist, as I've mentioned before, I think a well-executed cover is a a fantastic thing. Not mimicry, mind you, but putting one's own distinctive spin on a song while maintaing the original spirit of the music, or possibly taking it in a whole new direction.

teetotaller

Etymology

One anecdote attributes the origin of the word to a meeting of the Preston Temperance Society in 1833. This society was founded by Joseph Livesey, who was to become a leader of the temperance movement and the author of The Pledge: "We agree to abstain from all liquors of an intoxicating quality whether ale, porter, wine or ardent spirits, except as medicine." The story attributes the word to Dicky Turner, a member of the society, who in a speech said "I’ll be reet down out-and-out t-t-total for ever and ever".[2]

An alternative explanation is that teetotal is simply a duplication of the first 'T' in total (T-total). It is said that as early as 1827 in some Temperance Societies signing a 'T' after one's name signified one's pledge for total abstinence.[3] In England in the 1830s, when the word first entered the lexicon, it was also used in other contexts as an emphasized form of total; a comparable American English locution would be "total with a capital T" (an instance of the "[word] with a capital [word-initial letter]" snowclone). In this context, the word is still used, predominantly in the southern United States.[citation needed]

A common misspelling is "tea totaler", implying that the "person prefers to drink tea instead of alcoholic beverages".

I love when bands do cover songs, and if I had my way, every band would do a cover song in their set (or more appropriately, in their encore).

Even if it's a bad cover, it's always interesting seeing how bands take on and interpret songs; especially if it's something you would never expect (Brood/Metric, anyone?).

How about Hey Rosetta covering Paul Simon? (which isn't necessarily unexpected, just awesome)

(UNLESS it's Hallelujah. No one should ever cover that again)

@fictionjunkie - no problem. they carry plenty of good value beers & depending on the state, liquor, that aren't house brand. I get Oranjeboom quite a lot, which is Dutch. & only like $6 for a 6 of tall boys. they're pretty good for snacks too. I don't know about Nevada but the Cali ones have vodka, bourbon, etc. & wine. loads of wine.

I had some Batch 19 pre-prohibition lager that I picked up at the local & like but instead of being a fun craft brew it was via Coors. in very tiny print. but that's sorta their deal now. pimping cans of CoorsLight to unsuspecting Canadians & distributing 'craft like' beers under different labels. they handle Blue Moon too. I'm not sold on the original but they do some interesting seasonal beers. I'm partial to the Keffir Lime

I am working hard on learning to like beer, this is my third summer of practising.  It is hard not liking it, as it is something that is available and safe to drink every where.

I did learn you have to learn to like it, that many people don't like it at first.  And I learned it is the hops I don't like the flavour of.  Dark beers are way easier and much less bitter.

I have not learned how to finish a whole one yet though.  I have no idea where you beer drinkers put all that liquid and gas.  Wait.

BAR STORIES.

I don't know if I should tell this story, it is a bit shameful, but after that one, I think I should...

I had just gotten out of the field (Alaska/Yukon) after about 2 months. I met up with a bunch of friends in Whitehorse and went to the infamous Capital (not in existence any more- but it had a mummified cat epoxied into the bar to give you a sense of it). Regardless, to make a long story short, I was tired and worn out and it didn't take long for me to get really drunk. During one trip to the loo, I sat down, and lights out. I passed out sitting on the toilet. When I woke up, the bar was empty and closed, I was locked in! Luckily for me, the bartender who had closed up had forgotten something and had come back to the bar. Although he looked quite surprised to see me, he was very nice and let me leave with a what little dignity I had left. It turns out that my friends had actually looked for me and even come into the bathroom, but I was so deep in slumber I never heard them calling my name.

mine was a going out with a pal from work & just drinking steadily for about 8 hours & finishing off with a 'contest' involving a 32oz mason jar of redneck tea (a long island with cranberry & a shot of PGA).  i was....incoherent....

don't do that much anymore but #R3LAX did get to see me bottom of about a 1/3 pint of lager like i was still in college last Sunday

I had the power to let myself out but I'm guessing it would've been quite a skills test.  I can't tell you how many beers. or shots. but for sure 1 & 1/2 of the 32 oz long island teas. with a shot of grain alcohol in.
