After winning 13 Grammy Awards and selling more than 30 million albums, the Dixie Chicks' lead singer and rabble-rouser is branching out on her own. Mother, Natalie Maines’s debut solo album, will be released through Columbia Records on May 7, but you can stream it right here first via the music player below.
"I wanted this music to be very different from the Dixie Chicks," Maines said in a press release. "Lots of albums by lead singers might just as well have been made by the band, but I think this is very different from anything the Chicks could make. That separation and distinction was important."
Mother comes seven years after the Dixie Chicks’ last record, 2006’s Taking the Long Way, but desperate fans should find some solace here: one song, “Come Cryin’ To Me,” was originally written as a Dixie Chicks tune.
But Maines’s primary collaborator on Mother was actually Ben Harper, who recorded and co-produced the album in his studio and penned “Vein in Vain.” The result is a record still rooted in country sensibility, but with a decidedly rock edge.
Mother is available for pre-sale from iTunes. Fans in Canada can listen to it below.
