My first love was in Grade 3. He was one of the cool kids, and I the loser of the playground. We hugged one day and it was a full on - holding hands during recess - relationship! He gave me a little white teddy bear for Valentine's day and a necklace he made that said "I love you" with a sailboat on the end. Not sure what the sailboat was for but I still have it to this day. Just the sailboat though, not the other letters because the relationship didn't end well. He couldn't make up his mind about what he wanted and I ended up sitting in my room crying and blubbering the lyrics to Quit Playing Games With My Heart by The Backstreet Boys. The cutest part though, was that when we were in high school, he was even cooler and I was even more of a loser but he never denied that we had a thing in Grade 3. Jonny Mac, we called him. Ol' Jonny Mac.

Good morning! Cute topic today, Lana! I had lots of crushes all through school, most of which I never acted on (the few I did not going well). Had my first girlfriend in Grade Nine (and surprisingly we're still friends, but not close).

I actually had my first kiss in kindergarten. We were playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and she was being April and kissed me (don't remember which turtle I was). I remember I went home and told my parents and they made a big deal about how cute it was and I didn't understand what the big deal was.

When I was about 6 yrs old in Montreal, I was in love with my classmate Susan, who lived one street over.  We planned to have a 'playdate' on the weekend, and I told her I'd be over on the following Saturday.

So that Saturday, I went over to her house and rang the doorbell, her brother answered after I waited for several minutes.  He said to me 'What the hell??? do you know its 6:35am?"  I was horrified, I didn't realize then how stupid I was.  My excitement got the best of me.

I was also in love with Pamela Sue Martin, she was Nancy Drew in the 70s,

That is until I saw Maude Flanders a decade later.

@Mr. Fuss - the Hollerado show was a ton of fun!  They played Pick Me Up and Juliette back to back, so that made me very happy.  Yes, it was in a church hall (not basement) and it was quite awesome to see them in such a small venue.  The stage was really quite small.  The show was sold out, but the hall was by no means full.  I had a great time!  Born Ruffians were great too, even though they were short a member - Andy broke his arm the day before, so basically Luke was heckling his own band mate for being injured.  It was pretty funny.

Did you get to any shows that weekend?  If so, how was it?

So was Hollerado in the main sanctuary too? Or maybe there's another big room in there.

Doug Paisley opened and he was very good, although I find his songs too mellow and country. His guitar playing is outstanding though.

Hannah was sublime. The sound was awesome, except for the drums. They were very echo-y and boomy and tended to drown out the guitar and vocals. I think it was mainly the acoustics of the church. The best was when it was just Hannah and her guitar.

I feel like I'm always defending R3 on this specific point, but radio -- any radio, including R3 -- was not meant to be listened to in eight hour stretches. A lot of us bloggers do, but we represent less than five percent of all listeners.

But even on R3, there is far, FAR less repetition of songs/artists. Go look at the playlist for any Top 40 station, where they will literally play the high rotation songs once every hour. On R3 high rotation songs get played maybe thrice in a twelve hour span (once per host).

I understand where the "shallow, repetitive playlsit" complaints come from, but go listen to any other radio station, and you'll realise R3 has probably the deepest playlist around.

The main thing that bugs me these days is the variety of bands getting played/not played on R3. It used to be The Spot to come and discover new music but now, it plays the same old same old and is just more consistently syncing up with what R2 plays.

@Tom but I think that is more like R2 scooping up content from r3 as opposed to r3 playing stuff from radio 2

Thats what's going to happen when you smoosh all your radio into one big CBC Music where everything talks to each other.

It's better for the indie artists, they still have a place to come and start from, but then they are opened up to other audiences.

Just b/c they're played on R3 doesnt mean they are stuck here forever right? That's be a crap business model. hah.

Lee,

I don't like the votey-chart that much (mostly because I'm getting sick of bands perpetually asking for votes, but that's not an R3-problem, that's a whole other thing) BUT, I also haven't had a chance to listen to the R3-30 in ages, because it's on too early, so I haven't been all that "involved" in it, or the voting.

@christine - I totally get it and understand what you're saying. I just wish they would branch out and play "more actual indie" artists... that is, artists who don't have major distro deals in place already and so on. The term indie music is horrible and the tings that get passed as "indie" these days aren't' at all. Their format has shifted from "college radio" style to "commercial radio" style. Can't really blame 'em, college stations exist for a reason and they do a good job at filling the niche. R3 needs to make money, campus stations don't.

Ugh, I said I wouldn't rant. That's it!!! No more!!!

Individual blogs refresh the conversation topic every four hours. MegaBlogs are about the same thing all day. Everyone here has already discussed their crushes or whatever, so now we're on to other things, like CBC Music conspiracies.

Sure, new people pop by the blog all the time, but it's more intimidating to come in and comment on a 200+ comment blog rather than starting fresh with Grant's or Raina's show.

But again, maybe this is an issue that only affects us One Percent-ers.

I think the issue with all-day-blog is that it is one question.  East Coasters and early risers have already had their say by the time the PST crowd shows up.  I would be fine with the format if they just tweaked the topic for each show.  There could still be a theme, just new questions added for each show.

(1) I don't like the mega-blog, I liked mixing topics up over the course of the day.

(2) I don't like that for some reason CBC Radio 2 has cut all their program podcasts (except the concert ones)

(3) I REALLY don't like #2 because now I can't listen to The Signal because the re-listens are geoblocked for me- which makes NO SENSE. It is wanted to stay up to 2 am so I could listen to it on the Radio 2 stream then I could, so WHY BLOCK ME OUT on the audio after the fact?!?!

Sorry, that is my rant for the day. #2 and #3 are probably the reason I listen too much to Radio 3 now, which is probably the source for my previous complaints on how everything is starting to sound the same.

And I did try and participate in the mega-blog earlier (#28), and I really liked Steph's entry (#11).

Sorry if I sounded a bit ungrateful earlier. I always enjoy it when you host. It was just that your discussion about changes made me think about all the changes at CBC over the last month and how they really made me sad. Not all changes are bad, but too many at the same time can be overwhelming.

As for road trips, my husband and I just went on one this weekend to the Giant's Causeway- it was awesome, not just for the amazing beauty of the north coast of Ireland, but because we do road trips very well together. Pee breaks usually aren't an issue since neither of us have much of an issue hitting the great outdoors if necessary, so the protracted search for the elusive road-side outhouse is often avoided.

@Darbar - Darleen, I feel there is no connection if the host is not live.  For one reason, the shows are record in a little over an hour, and there is no music whatsoever being played while the host breaks are recorded.  That host has the playlist, and intros all the songs without ever hearing them at all.  It can make the host breaks seem flat.

As a former spin the records disc jockey, the music that you are playing and listening to can affect your mood, help you come up with stories, and simply make you feel more like you're in a radio show.  A pre recorded Toronto show could be recorded anywhere with a mic, recorder and a playlist.  To me, it feels way different.  Grant and Lana do their shows live - four full hours of listening to the music and commenting in between.  I think Craig had the ability to make it seem not so canned.  And, when I was there in Toronto in 2011, I asked Craig if he'd prefer doing the show live, he gave me an emphatic YES.

The blog is much more lively with a live host, and the host can encourage the blog to keep on a topic.  A pre recorded show's blog wanders all over the place.  I may stop listening, but I'll still follow the blog, if only because this is where my friends are.

Kirk: I like it, but you need a gimmick.  Hear me out here, you're a poet, and your first volume is all about blankets, metaphorical and otherwise.  So that poem wold be "All My Love Has Been Unrequilted". I think PST would agree this is a promising marketing exercise for a fledgling poet.  Maybe he can set you up a few meetings?

So whadaya think, Graham Wright... got any hip-hop cued up during the show?
