Picture a suburban mall all decked out for the holidays, with busy shoppers going about their business of conducting a live performance of the Hallelujah chorus from Handel's Messiah. Wait, what?

That's exactly what happened last weekend at Vancouver's Oakridge Centre, when one of Canada's finest vocal ensembles, musica intima, gave an unexpected show. The singers stood at the ready with Handel's Hallelujah chorus in their choir books, waiting for someone to conduct them. The shoppers did not disappoint.

Over the course of an hour and a half, dozens of budding maestros volunteered to set down their packages and pick up a baton to wave and twirl with gusto. And all the while they revelled in the amazing sound they helped create.
