I install DuckDuckGo and use it. Not only because it uses https and doesn't save any search queries, but because you get a straight-ahead search and not any of that "bubble" crap that Google does. Sometimes, it's possible to be too helpful

the nice thing is, if I don't like the search results, I can enter a quick code in the search line to direct to a search engine - !g - and I've got a google search

it's a search engine only. If you run FF, the plugin installs quite nicely and runs like a charm. I think it sets itself to be your default search engine; if not, it's easy to set it.

you get a results page with your search at the top. If it's not giving you what you want, you can go up and insert a command string at the start of your search and redo it

!g-google

!y yahoo

!b bing

!yt youtube

etc...

It doesn't work as nicely with Chrome. Not sure it works at all with IE. In those cases, you can bookmark duckduckgo.com and use it as your search page

@Krib - ahh, I will probably just set it as the search page. With the add-on, it installed a button, when you click on it a search bar comes up.. but then nothing happens when you press enter (it's obviously a bit buggy with safari).  Also, duckduckgo results show up first when you search something with google.. so I'm always confused on if google is still tracking that or not!

@krib - I haven't really researched browser security, but this site has both Chrome and Firefox ahead of IE in their rankings.

I also looked at NSS Lab studies which show that IE by default blocks cookies, but their conclusion:

DoNotTrack iscurrently neffective as a privacy mechanism

Sure you can block cookies everywhere, just don't be surprised when you can't get to many sites.

I'll stick with Firefox or Chrome until I discover solid proof I should be using something else.

If you use the internet, people are tracking what you're up to, that's the conclusion I've come to.  I'm not concerned enough about it to go searching out the most private browser etc.  There's an inherent risk in using the technology.

DoNotTrack is ineffective because it's only a request. It's also a request that I've heard Google conveniently circumvents in many ways. The whole "don't be evil" thing has long fallen by the wayside.

If you search for pterodactyl porn with duckduckgo, it won't track the search. DuckDuckGo intentionally doesn't keep them around. The site you connect to can track you, though, unless you get into using something like Tor

LB,

I know of Tor. I just saw a presentation about it at a conference this past weekend, in fact.

It's cool because it bounces traffic using something called "onion routing" - layers, like an Ogre.

That makes it tough to trace the chain because each layer doesn't pass on connection information from the previous layer, so when you get to the last jump (the exit node), the site you're connecting to sees the connection as coming from that exit node instead of from you.

Pros: anonymity

Cons: can slow down traffic due to the jumps, especially streaming

Cool that this little box has the ability to whitelist sites so they don't go through Tor.

Chopz, the fast food usually happens when on the road and options are limited. The half-way point to driving to visit my family has a Subway and an A&W. I've got the kids mostly conditioned that Subway is the default stop, but sometimes the collective groaning overwhelms

and, really, the choice is "meat" or lower-fat "meat" + nitrates

@Chopz #229, I have not travelled many times but I try to eat local or try to see how a local establishment treats something like fish and chips.  I remember eating at a McDs in Amsterdam when I was a child but it was not my choice. (I think it may have been my first).

The other thing about burger chains is that they have picture menus, less of a language barrier.

I don't remember the name but it was on the north side, between Pape & the other one....whatever O'Connor turns into - Coxworth? man, can't believe I'm forgetting this stuff - need to go visit again

very take-out, fast food looking kind of place. The spanikopita is made in giant trays and the slice a slab out and stick it in one of those waxy paper bag things, so you can wander along the street and eat.

Greektown is fabulous

@krib - No Family Pizza that I know of. A lot of restaurants have good fancy pizza but for a pizza you order, it's pretty rough.

Regina also has no Slice Scene for the night crowd which is weird. Because when I'm drunk downtown, I always want street meat or a slice. In Regina it's all about drive thru's (drinking and driving is a popular past time here)

Chopz: Impossible to find as fast food, but not hard to find in simple restaurants, and in food stores, is the Québec-originated meat pie called Tourtière. It's the spices that make it tasty, as otherwise it's just ground two or three meat (beef, veal, pork?).

Alanna, i think you're the best DJ on R3 right now, unfortunately i'm usually packing up and trying to get out of the office around the time you come on at 4:00 ET...i need to remember to catch your show when it replays, when does that happen?

I picked up a salad from the grocery store and came back to work. Everything in there including croutons but no dressing. I feel it must have got missed because that makes no sense.

BfO I know, hoping to get a few on it though, but along the same line, a few people (mostly Americans) confused Vancouver, WA for Vancouver, BC during the Olympics

@deiru #382, When the WLAF was starting some English people thought there would be a team in Birmingham, England not knowing there was a Birmingham, Alabama.

I clicked the vote button beside Aidan Knight's video in confused attempt to watch it, then watched the others and realized that was my favourite anyway. Beautifully done.

kind of embarassing that Canada's best and most unique live act Kytami was left off the ballot. Not even a reference to Hannah Epperson? It feels like you guys don't give a crap unless some self important skinny dude with a guitar wrote it.
