Not many songwriters can boast a collection of songs like Steve Earle, and 25 years ago he released one of his best. On Oct. 17, 1988, Earle released the album Copperhead Road, scoring one of the biggest crossover hits in country music's history. The title track is an intense story song about a Vietnam vet who brings some bad habits he picked up overseas back to the family moonshine business.

His political anthems, road songs and tear-jerkers are great, but let's enjoy this anniversary by looking at 10 of our favourite Steve Earle songs about the outlaw element.

Check them out in our gallery. And if you want to hear him play some of these live, he's playing Toronto's Massey Hall on Oct. 29.

If you like Steve Earle, listen to him and similar artists on CBC Music's Alternative Country stream.
