For me, Post War Blues was one of those love-at-first-listen songs. From the first time I heard it live last year, I knew it would be a favourite. So I am voting for that.

And I like Sloan, but I think Unkind was just kind of... a generic Sloan song. There are plenty other songs that would be more deserving for that spot.

My list of threes is exactly the same as Grant's (wallet, keys, blackberry)

You need to put a bowl or something by the door and put the keys and wallet in there as soon as you come in the door. That way, everytime you leave, the only thing you have to find/remember is your phone. The only times I can't seem to find anything is the mornings after I get home stumbly drunk and the keys are not in the bowl where they should be so I have to try and piece the previous night back together in order to find them.

I first heard this track on (GASP!) commercial radio when my iPod died and I rocked out instantly. I am not a huge Sloan fan but this is just a rocky, catchy jam!

With reference to Mangan…

So I had this discussion this weekend, with Mrs. Teebs. When Oh Fourtune came out I was still so enamoured with Nice, Nice, Very Nice, that (brace yourself, Radio3 friends, the province of BC, and generally everyone else) said I wasn't sure it was as good as an album as it's predecessor.

In my defense, I really loved Nice, Nice, Very Nice like that first kiss in a dimly lit basement to side A of Journey's Escape as the soundtrack…

But let's fast forward to a week ago and that conversation that happened directly after seeing that very wonderful doc. that Hodgey-Podgey put together.

I realized that like a ninja, Oh Fourtune has quietly skulked up on me in the night, and converted me over. I really think this album, will be Dan's THE album… As in the Sargent Pet Sounds of his career. And I in turn now love that album much more than Nice, Nice, Very Nice.

Kinda funny how some of the albums I love the most, really took some time for them to resonate with me. But, my vote goes for Mangan and Post War Blues. Which says a lot, because of how much I adore the ENTIRE Voyageur album.

And there you have it… a long lost TB3 essay…

There's nothing scarier than being a sidecar in it all and just watching something that scary unfold. Especially when it's the one you owe all your best moments to.

Thankfully, it worked out okay. We did lose the pregnancy, but here we are, years later, with a beautiful daughter and my best friend in life, still kicking it.

Carrying our epipen with us where ever we go.

My husband is allergic to wasp / bee stings, so I was always on the alert re: our daughter.  The very first time she gets stung, it's on the INSIDE of her lower lip (tip:  use extreme caution when eating blueberry pancakes with maple syrup outside at a farmer's market).  Luckily the drug store was right across the street, so we went flying over there for some Benadryl.  Didn't appear she was allergic, but it hurt like a @#$%^&*@%#&%$%^.

Micheal Rault's song Fall In Love With Every Girl I See could and should be on there. But maybe it didn't come out in the right time frame.

The yellow jackets were bad up here last year but it was because we didn't get a week or so at -30.  They hibernate in the ground over winter and a good cold snap kills a lot of them off.  If we don't get one, then they are out in full force the next summer.

We've had to hang one of those traps for them in the backyard to keep them out.  Every couple of weeks I pour a handfull of drowned yellow jackets out if it.   Good riddance to those bastards, I say.

the things everyone is hating on are a small fraction of the wasps that actually exist out there; they just happen to be the most noticeable. Many wasps are beneficial, and some to live on flower nectar and help pollinate flowers; in fact, the fig wasp is the ONLY wasp that pollinates figs.

The majority are parasitic, which sounds awful, but what they do is lay eggs inside other insects, often ones that damage crops.

the real wasp bastards everyone is complaining about are yellowjackets and hornets, which only seem to be the majority

I've been stung twice. Once by a wasp when I was working as a house painter. We were doing the outside of a woman's century-old garage. She said there had been a nest but the exterminator had got rid of them. I was up there, took two scrapes at the old, flaking paint and a dozen of the bastards crawled out from under the eaves. BAM! One of them got me right between the eyes. I climbed down and quickly enforced my right to refuse unsafe work. I don't know what happened to that shed or the wasps...

The other time, I was 5 and we were eating watermelon on the back porch. I was wearing a white and neon-pink-striped shirt. A hornet buzzed up and went down my sleeve. I stayed in that awkward, arms-up position you take when you're young and eating melon slices for 10 minutes. I never saw it leave but I couldn't feel anything in there so I brought my arm down... There are probably few places that suck more to be stung in than your armpit... The mouth is definitely one of them, though.

After than, my older brother let me wear his wellies and he put a giant box fan on me... I don't know why he thought that might help, but he was only 6. Pampering means something very different when you're still a kid.

Also, he was not alone in bee/wasp misdaventures in youth. It seems a little sadistic to admit, but I would lob rocks at wasp nests and was always amazed that, even from afar, they would manage to track me down as I ran away. I got stung in the butt, through my swim trunks. They showed me.

I saw a thing on the telly once about a place where they have a seven year cicada cycle. Every seven years there are so many cicadas they have to shovel them off the sidewalks. Talking on the phone during they days was impossible due to the noise.

Creepy.

Stevie

There are several different broods of cicadas. Some run a 7-year cycle. Some are longer and shorter.

The entomologist in me wants to see what happens when those broods overlap. Is there inter-brood mating? What cycle would those offspring follow?

Yes, I'm a nerd.

We had a couple yellow jacket nests in our eaves and I was all worried about how to knock em down and not get stung. Trying on different defensive clothing systems, testing my knocking down and running fast technique, etc. Then my roommate reminded me that we are renters and call the management company and they hire an exterminator. Which I did. Really takes the excitement out of the story though.

@Garfield -- you get used to it.  I've gone through three wasp traps and three cans of wasp killer spray this summer.  Taken down at least ten nests, if I remember correctly.  Hunting just past dusk is key... they gather at the nest and you can blast a good number of them in one shot.  Also, the foaming spray is great; slows down the ones who try to get away pretty well.

Needless to say, it's been a wasp-y summer; and, like so many else 'round here, my wife was also stung this summer.  The swelling has just finally gone away after about 2 weeks.

I always felt bad for the custodial staff who had to get the giant bees nests out of the trees around the school, armed only with a broom and a wheel barrow.

when I was young, I was told I was allergic to insect bites, and was scared silly of bees and wasps and stuff (it didn't help that my dad was also scared of them). Then, in University, I was out at the beach with a friend in the fall, walking barefoot, and I stepped on a wasp or bee or something and got stung.

I took some allergy medicine and we made a beeline for town, thinking I'd be dead by the time we got there, and it turned out not much happened. The toe that it stung swole up big time, but other than that...

so I'm a lot less worried about it now, and have been stung a few times. A couple of years ago, one just flew into my neck and stung me. Never got stuck in my collar or anything. It was fall. They get really weird in fall

Hi All, just getting on to the blog after a midday meeting here in NYC. I'm relieved Kathleen Edwards is okay. Saw her Luminato show in Toronto in June and she and her band were fantastic! My weekend doings:

1) I attended a great show Friday night with Great Lake Swimmers and Patrick Watson. A packed house at the Bowery Ballroom. Wearing my "Heart R3" t-shirt I met a Toronto couple there who'd flown down to NYC for the show and a long weekend in NYC. The wife of the couple pulled it off as a surprise for her doctor husband, showing up at his office with airplane tickets, saying "We're going to see your favorite band (Great Lake Swimmers)"

2) I've applied for press accreditation to the CMJ Music Festival in NYC Oct. 16-20. Canadian artists so far announced: Bend Sinister, the Luyas, Metz.

Mumblety peg is generally played between two people with the aid of a pocket knife. In one version of the game, two opponents stand opposite one another with their feet shoulder-width apart. The first player then takes the knife and throws it to "stick" in the ground as near his own foot as possible. The second player then repeats the process. Whichever player "sticks" the knife closest to his own foot wins the game.

If a player "sticks" the knife in his own foot, he wins the game by default, although few players find this option appealing because of the possibility of bodily harm. The game combines not only precision in the knife-throwing, but also a good deal of bravado and proper assessment of one's own skills.

I have a question for those with iPhones - or iPod.  I have downloaded the R3 podcasts for years, and have listened to them either with a set of speakers or on the earbuds.  However, about a month ago, I was updating the podcasts, and when I played them back, they played back at almost double speed.  I even went so far as to delete all of the podcasts, then added them again, and still, double speed.  Yet the recorded music from albums - all through iTunes - play normally.

Any idea why and what to do about it?
