In the first hour of the show this week, Saturday Night Blues host Holger Petersen talks with blues and boogie piano professor David Vest. Originally from Alabama, Vest started playing professionally in 1957 and has worked with artists like Big Joe Turner, Sam the Sham, Paul deLay and Tammy Wynette. Vest moved to Victoria, B.C., a few years ago and is a welcome addition to the Canadian blues scene.
The second hour features a concert with Lyle Lovett and His Large Band. Lovett is known for writing soulful songs with a sense of humour. He had a 14-piece band, with some of the most diverse and sought after players, along with him when we recorded this concert at the 2011 Edmonton Folk Music Festival.
Each week, SNB also features a cover of the week. An original recording of a classic blues tune is compared with a fresh take from a brand new release. This week, Johnny Young’s 1967 original version of “Havin’ a Ball” is reworked by Sugar Ray and the Bluetones.
We always welcome input from the listeners. If you have a song request or a blues story to share, please let us now in the comments below.
