Dear CBCMusic.ca fans,
When we last wrote to you, we let you know about a complaint that had been filed with the CRTC by a private competitor against CBCMusic.ca. As we prepared our reply to the complaint, we asked you to lend a hand by showing your support for our service, and taking the time to tell the CRTC what you think of the work we’re doing over here at CBCMusic.ca.
We’re thrilled to let you know that today those efforts have paid off. The CRTC in its broadcasting decision #2012-442 has dismissed the complaint against us.
We’re very pleased by today’s CRTC decision, as CBCMusic.ca plays an important role in supporting Canadian artists across the country and in meeting the needs of Canadians in an ever-evolving digital world. Today's decision also continues the CRTC's practice of encouraging innovation in the delivery of programming over digital platforms.
A big thank you goes out to each and every one of you for your ongoing support of the CBC and specifically for CBC Music over the last few months. Whether you are a musician, a music industry professional, or a listener, we deeply appreciate you taking the time to tweet, post or write to the CRTC to express your support for CBCMusic.ca.
Our focus is now on continuing to build and grow for the future.
Last month we added to our 40+ web radio stations new streams focused on Canadian Roots, Classic R&B and Soul and a great new channel for children, produced with Kids’ CBC.
That came on the heels of the launch of our app for Android phones and tablets, which is available alongside the iPhone and iPad app (now downloaded more than 85,000 times).
Over 29,000 Canadian artists have signed up for CBCMusic.ca and those artists have uploaded over 130,000 Canadian songs which are available on the site. And all of this content has meant that since launch, over 7.5 million hours of music have been streamed on CBCMusic.ca and the site has had over 8.7 million pageviews.
We’ve had a lot of success since we’ve launched the service (how could we not with fans like you?) and we look forward to building on that success in the weeks, months and years to come.
Thank you, again.
Sincerely,
Chris Boyce,
Executive Director, CBC Radio and Audio
Mark Steinmetz,
Director of Music Programming
Steve Pratt,
Director of Digital Music
