This Tuesday, everyone's favourite leading man turns 50 – and no, I'm not talking about Thomas Gibson. Tom Cruise hits the mid-century mark on July 3. He's helped create some unforgettable movie moments over three decades of acting. In many cases, the songs that score those moments have become iconic as well. And he's single!
Here are his top 10 music moments:
10. Rock of Ages.
Moment: Um, well, I haven't seen the movie and you probably haven't either. I have seen the trailer though, and he totally sings with his shirt off.
Song: "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi.
9. Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles.
Moment: Vampire Tom dances around with a corpse. Meanwhile, everybody else is acting pretty bummed.
Song: "Lestat's Tarantella" by Elliot Goldenthal.
8. The Color of Money.
Moment: Cruise's character (I wanna say Vince) is dominating at pool, singing along to "Werewolves of London," swinging his pool cue like a bo staff, and just generally Tom Cruising it up.
Song: "Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon.
7. Rain Man.
Moment: While The Hangover would have you believe the song plays during the casino scene, "Iko Iko" actually plays at the beginning of the movie, when we meet Cruise's character during the delivery of some Lamborghinis.
Song: "Iko Iko" by the Belle Stars.
6. Vanilla Sky.
Moment: At the beginning of the film, Cruise "opens his eyes" and we're introduced to this character who seems to have the perfect life – OR DOES HE?
Song: "Everything in Its Right Place" by Radiohead – OR IS IT?
5. Tropic Thunder.
Moment: During the movie's closing credits, Cruise as the hairy-wristed Les Grossman busts out an amazing minute-long dance to Ludacris.
Song: "Get Back" by Ludacris.
4. Jerry Maguire.
Moment: When Jonathan Lipnicki gives Jerry Maguire a big hug and we see a new side to the sports agent (at 7:18 of the clip).
Song: "Secret Garden" by Bruce Springsteen.
3. Cocktail.
Moment: Cruise and that Australian dude do some amazing synchronized flare bartending. Side note: I guarantee those drinks ended up tasting gross.
Song: "Hippy Hippy Shakes" by The Georgia Satellites.
2. Top Gun.
Moment: In a movie with iconic scenes that feature "Danger Zone," "Playing with the Boys" and "Take My Breath Away," it's hard to pick a favourite, but all those other songs take a back seat to the a capella bar singing.
Song: "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" by The Righteous Brothers.
1. Risky Business.
Moment: Teenaged Cruise has the house to himself, so obviously he dances around to Bob Seger with no pants on. We all do that. Almost 30 years later, this remains Cruise's most memorable moment.
Song: "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger.
