blog post “That’s a band, not one guy!?” Band names that sound like solo acts.

A couple weeks ago I joked that Sidney York, Elliott Brood and Shred Kelly need to go on tour and call it the "We're a band, not a person!" tour.

Last night I told Sage that if Shred Kelly and Elliott Brood ever played together I might have a stroke -- way too much adrenaline!  She said they actually have played together: mindblowing!

She was very happy to get her Kirk hug from FrenchCrunch by the way, her face just lit up!

I'm pretty sure we can't have this conversation without asking the question, "Which one is Pink?" (as in, Pink Floyd ... the band, not the person ... but which was named after not one, but two people: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council).

Reverse examples:

Final Fantasy, before he just went by Owen Pallett is another one that confused many. 

And even Destroyer, before Bejar made it clear that they were an actual band, not just him as Destroyer, and a bunch of dudes.

A little random fact,Foster the People was originally called Foster and The People, since Mark Foster is the front man. But after much confusion and mistakenly being called and known as Foster the People, they decided to drop the "and" out.

I have heard him say that too, but doesn't his band change all the time? In that case, it's harder to say that you and your band are Destroyer.

it did for a while, but the last three records have been more or less the same group of people. I think it started as a personal project, but has evolved into a full band.

fun fact*: Matthew Good Band was never supposed to be called Matthew Good Band. They needed a name for a contest and that was just a placeholder until they could think of something better. Then they ended up winning and getting a couple hit songs, and it was too late to change it.

I have to say Bon Iver kind of deserves the confusion that name gets..."For Emma, Forever Ago" was recorded entirely by him in that Wisconsin cabin, and it seems like he only put together the band later to perform the stuff. I personally still refer to Bon Iver as just one guy.

There is a girl my sister knows, who is always trying to name drop and prove she knows so much about independent music. (it's not me, I swear, hahaha!) Confusing names:

Destroyer is one that always comes to mind for me too.  Women is another.  A band with four dudes, called Women.  The Dudes, otoh, is a name that fits. 

I was pretty confused when I went to see Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers and it was just one guy...*

*I know this is a band but it was confusing because he was promoting it as a band show but then it was just him. Woah!

@Kathy: I think it can be totally a romantic thing, although I'm a pretty prolific mixtape maker, so I frequetly need to be clear which of mine are aimed at that and which are totally not.

I was deliberately leaving out Rae Spoon b/c they (singular) don't identify as having a gender. Any confusion that may be caused is because you have to wrap your head around a new definition of gender, not b/c their name is obscurant.

Old Man Luedecke doesn't seem that old, but when people call him Chris I get confused...

Classic confusing band name: "Blondie." Audiences to this day believe that "Blondie" is the name of the lead singer, presumably because of her platinum blonde hair. But "Blondie" actually referred to the ensemble. The confusion was so common that the band put out buttons and t-shirts that read "Blondie is a band."

Bands that sound like one person- Serena Ryder often performs solo, but (according to her at O-town folkfest last year) she is now working a lot with 'her' (?) band, The Beauties, so we should call them Serena Ryder and the Beauties. Can't quite shake the habit of just calling them all Serena Ryder.

That's another area of confusion, stage names. It's pretty weird when you see someone you know by their real name get called by their stage name. Ridley Bent, for example.

RE: Shred Kelly-

After my rehearsal I met my roommate at the metro and we convinced her to run like a crazyperson down 4 long blocks to Barfly. When we got there the temperature was at LEAST 10 degrees hotter than outside and the band was in full swing! We managed to catch the last half hour of the show and they were AWESOME. and then after I went to go say hi to them as per their FB request (and when Shred Kelly asks, how can one say no??)

So I went and talked to Tim for like 15 minutes, grinning like a complete moron. He asks if he can sell me a CD but I don't have any money left so I have to decline. We talk a bit more and then he has to go pack up so I go back to my roommate. Then like 5 minutes later, he finds us at the bar and gives me this huge smile and HANDS ME A CD.FOR FREE. and it's their new one that ISN'T EVEN RELEASED YET. because I have apparently 'done enough' by listening to them, telling friends about them and letting their music keep me from killing customers.

Wow @laurita I can't believe me and Frenchcrunch missed you!  We were chatting with Luke and then Sage, and with the drummer's Mom and Dad who came from St. John's to Montreal to see their baby boy play, lovely folks!  It's crazy that all of this was going on at the same time...Great story -- I love it when our expectations are not only met but exceeded!

Mind you Frenchcrunch was on a hugging mission: Sage for Kirk, Luke for Rebbey, as many members of Shred Kelly as she could on behalf of all of us and ToT!

So Mordecai Richler's book(s) has/have spawned two band names: Hooded Fang, and there used to be the band Jacob Two-Two -- who actually asked for, and got, his permission (from a band interview).

Toronto was a strange band.  I’m not really clear on their story.  I believe they were all Americans who moved to Toronto. 

I just got this Lindi Ortega album at the CJTR sale quite awhile ago. It has never left my CD player. (admittedly, I tend to just listen to my ipod, but I still have been listening to it alot. It's so good!)

not sure why it took me so long to figure this out but I open one tab for R3 and another for the genre stream channels so that the ad doesn't have to play every time I press pause'n'play on the R3 stream. (comes in handy when purity ring comes on).

So I haven't really read any of the other earlier posts but Bon Iver has to be the most confusing example of this. It's basically Justin Vernon using a pseudonym (Bon Iver) that sounds like an actual name.

I always say "he" when I'm referring to Bon Iver when in my mind I'm talking about Justin Vernon. I've been corrected on that so many times by people who don't even know who Justin Vernon is and I find it annoying.

@409 - he's great on the radio - but I wish R2 would tweak their tunes just a bit.  How many times do I have to hear bad cover songs.  There is one that covers Simon and Garfunkel and it's not good at all and is plays everyday.  Ah well, I guess not all stations can be as good as R3.  Maybe if they didn't set the bar so high.

When I met Hannah Georgas I was shocked at how short she is. (I just commited a grammar foul, but I'm an engineer so deal with it). Before that I had only seen her from a distance & she was on stage. I guess I weirdly imagine that people I don't know are my height or approximately so.
