Yay, Lana!

I would just like to reaffirm my music crush on Lana.

1/2 on topic: apparently the tickets at the John Mellencamp concert in town the other day said "no flash or videos." Security started trying to eject people who were snapping cell phone pictures, and basically everyone lost their mind, because almost everyone was taking flash-less cellphone pictures, and, per Nova Scotia law, the ticket is the binding contract, not legal mumbo jumbo posted online. The ticket clearly permitted photography.

So glad this is the topic today.. I've been quite a hermit until maybe this last year or so, and thus I always end up feeling awkward when I go to shows...

What do you think fans shouldn’t do?

WHAT ARE YOUR RULES FOR CONCERTGOERS?

Don't really have any. Be considerate, don't flail when there are people nearby, please don't block my view if I was already there (I do my best to avoid doing this, I'm kinda tall), don't block my access to the massive hole in front of you.

What would you like to see? 

More shows. But seriously, no idea what I'd like to see for rules. I don't like rules. I prefer common sense and respect. We're adults. But I'd like to see more all age shows. Halifax is bad for them because our liquor laws are ridiculous.

What do you think fans shouldn’t do?

Block my view, push & shove, sing loudly when uninvited, especially during beautiful acoustic portions.

Fans should be aware that their dancing circle is not much larger than their own bodily circumference. I know you're having a good time dancing, but your stomping around is pushing -my- space further and further into other people and it's taking away from -our- good time.

Backstory - the show I was at that prompted me to make my comment was Prince Perry and the Gladtones.  It was in the back room of a bar, with a small bit of seating at the edges of the room, standing room in the middle.  I got there early, and am not as young as I used to be, so I took a seat at the side.  I swear the dude next to me did not move the entire show.  It weirded me out.  I mean, it's a SKA show, lots of energy in the room. 

I basically have three rules:

- don't bump people or shoulder into them; ask nicely or swim your way through

- don't sing the words loud enough that I hear you clearer than the band

- don't say you need to get up to the front to "meet your friends"; really now

I listened to cookie monster's version of  'call me maybe' and it has been in my head ever since.

I've tried listening to good music and bad music to get it out. Nothing is working.

I really don't like "rules" for things that aren't board games so I would say just take a proverbial chill pill and enoy yourself. My previous comment about not bringing you little ones to concerts still applies though. If the kid can't talk or walk, don't bring it to a show!

WHAT ARE YOUR RULES FOR CONCERTGOERS?

I love enthusiasm at a concert, and I will most definitely be dancing and singing along as much as (if not slightly more than) the next guy at a lot of shows, but the following guidelines might make the concert-going experience a little better for all of us music fans. Here we go, kids:

*if you care to sing along, please do, but unless it's a full-on crowd sing-along number (e.g.: "Robots" by Dan Mangan) just keep your voice down. Unless you happen to be Feist the odds are the people around you are there to hear whoever the hell is on stage, not you. 

*if there is a gap in prime real-estate fairly close to you, it's yours to fill, subject to major height/viewpoint issues. If you don't fill it, it's fair game, friends. Please note: the aforementioned gap is not the one inch squared spot directly in front of me. Do not arrive late, sneak to the front and douche-slide your way in to a spot directly in front of a person who patiently waited to secure a prime view point. 

*while the engaging personalities of some performers might make you feel like you can have a one-on-one conversation with them, please, please don't. If the performer(s) ask a question (e.g.: what's a good place to get waffles in town?) then answering is only a display of common courtesy. Anything much beyond that just gets awkward, especially if you're really drunk and/or, well, stupid.

Hello hello hello!  Rules? Not much point because people will do what they're going to do anyway -- it's kind of like the weather, sometimes it's great and you enjoy it and other times it's terrible and you just have to deal.  It's all about common sense and respecting others, which tends to go out the window when people are excited and/or full of booze.

What would I like to see???

Concert Dancing

Dance only as wildly as you have space to do so, taking into account how much your neighbours are moving. Don't bounce back and forth if those around you are stationary. You're only going to distract them and get some elbows in your kidneys. If there isn't a mosh pit, don't act like you're in one.

Iron Throne Request from yesterday: in anticipation of seeing him at HCFF I would like to hear a Jim Bryson song please!  In honour of pjrocks I was going to ask for "Pissing on Everything" but I think I'd rather hear "Sleeping in Toronto" but anything by Jim would be lovely.  Cheers!

Aye.  spitting is definitely gross.

My only real pet peeve is when people decided to have a conversation at screaming level during a concert, especially when it's an acoustic performance. It's super rude and it's hard to listen to the music and not them, which is what I'd rather be doing. It also kinda bugs me when people act like a statue, as you said Jdurley, and then leave as quickly as they can right after. I get that crowds can be difficult to deal with for a long time, but lighten up a bit people! grah!

okay, rant done.

Re: concert buddies-my thoughts exactly, Soop!

I don’t like people who talk and hang out with their friends all concert.  A little talking is fine, but if all you want to do is hang out with your friends then take it to the back, or somewhere else entirely, and stop disturbing the people who are there for the show.  Sheesh! 

I generally don’t have a problem with people who just stand there watching the show.  Recently, however, I had a guy standing less than a metre behind me, still, not moving or smiling, just staring at the band.  That was a bit creepy.  If the guy was smiling at least then you could tell he was enjoying the show. Nope.  Stone faced and still, right behind me. 

62 + 1 - although I really want to go pick up some lunch, but the music is too good...  I'm having a sandwish.

I don't think I can add much to this topic that hasn't already been said. Especially comment #21. No loud talkers, No heavy DFMO, No statueing, No angry heckling, etc. etc. etc.

I do have a note for musicians: Please, if you're planning on dancing around a lot during the show, wear undergarments. I've been to numerous shows where the female/male artists are not wearing supportive undies and the crowd ends up getting more than they bargained for (@CMac will remember what I'm talking about, in particular). Keep your bits in your clothes/in place. Thanks.

@TRH - Yeah, there is no cure for that.  Hopefully, they will grow out of it.  Like I said, I can't explain it, I did it, I am ashamed of it.

whenever I get that fluoride mouthwash from the dentist I have to spit constantly so I don't swallow any and make myself sick. it's kinda hilarious/awful running around searching for garbage cans to spit into like a total maniac on the way home. as in *spit* I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry *spit*

One time while running some guy spat right next to me. He obviously saw me approaching, there was grass on both sides of the path, and BAM! he spat toward me. I didn't know how to react. I have a feeling this is what it feels like when people are spitting at concerts.

Final comment re: spitting. I used to ref hockey. Hockey players love spitting. One guy who felt the need to spit as I passed the bench discovered the hard way that spitting on anyone, even if by "accident" leads to an automatic match penalty & that being kicked out of the playoffs gives your coach free reign to scream at refs for "making the wrong call." The team also learned that a 2-2 must-win game becomes really hard when you're down a coach and an assistant captain.

The spitting was really bad when we went to China. They had stop spitting signs post up all over Beijing. It is a public health issue in some countries. 

ONE RULE

Dear tall person, When you walk up near us, you're welcome to stand beside us or behind us but NOT right in front of us as you are TALLER THAN US. Use your head. 

My biggest concert pet peeve is when people shout and talk through an entire song, or worst, when the performer is trying to talk and maybe give some background behind the meaning of the song. It pisses me off and shows that they're not really there for the performance and I wish they'd go away.

I usually try and find a post near the front and stand in front of that. Reflections is good for that. And Gus' too. But the wall at Gus' isn't far from the stage on one side so that's another option. It's my gift to less vertically gifted people.

I love the way Dallas Green never gives up trying: I've seen City & Colour a few times, and he always makes a comment about the silliness of watching the concert through an iPhone, or of posting blurry video or photos, or complains about people talking too much ("Do you mind? We're trying to play here!)  I've seen him kick people out or at least point out the Exit signs.  Fight the good fight Dallas, one obnoxious concert-goer at a time!  Except it's starting to look like people do or say things just to get him going...vicious cycle?

Why the douche-slide works? They are taking advantage of the fact that people sometimes have to go to the bathroom and then return to where they are standing. Since you can't know whether the person coming from behind really belongs there, and you don't want to believe people are d-bags (although some clearly are) you let them through. Probably the same d-bags that pull to the right in merge lanes so they can pass the people lined up waiting patiently.

I too love the Schmancy.

I think being short is mostly better than being tall: for example we can fit into airplane seats more comfortably (and there are always tall folk willing to help get stuff out of the overhead).  We have a friend who is 6'10" and guys are always coming up to him and saying stuff like "How tall are you? I can take you!" and then they want to fight.

Why do you have a problem with people bringing babies to concerts, especially since you don't have any problem with anything else people do at a show? 

If I show up at a venue with a baby, it's only because I really had to anyway. Do you encounter it a lot for some reason? Why does it bother you?

Spitting

I think they cane you for spitting in public in Singapore.  Actually I think you have to do a little more than that to get caned, but I believe there’s a hefty fine. 

“Under section 17(1) of the Environmental Public HealthAct,[28] it is an offence to:

        (g) spit any substance or expel mucus fromthe nose upon or onto any street or any public place;...

    The penalty is a fine not exceeding S$5,000 and, in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, a fine not exceeding S$10,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three months or both.”

@binsy - It doesn't "bother" me all that much I must admit but I have to say I don't understand why people do it. With the crying and whatnot it just seems like what's the point? Mom or dad don't  get to enjoy the show because they're fussing over baby and meanwhile, baby's ears are getting permanently damaged and they're breathig second hand safety meeting by product.... it's just not the place or time, it would seem to me.

@teaandcartography not sure if anyone replied, but I have heard that when a song gets in your head it is because you can't remember the next line.  The solution? Go back and listen song again, learn the next few lines, and sign with additional lyrics.  It works pretty well for me.

Apparently I am an easy going concert attendee.  I have just one rule: don't mess up the bathroom.  The things I have seen.

also, I wasn't saying that babies can't be there, I just dislike it when parents don't  take the kid someplace quiet to calm them down, feed them, etc. 

If you are taking a child to a show, make sure they have headphones to protect their hearing. I guess it's okay if you want to ruin your own hearing, but don't damage your children's hearing.

Not directed at anyone, but at Mariposa there was one mother up at the front dancing with her baby wiith no hearing protection.

Now that wordburglar is on, I think its the perfect time to swoon over Bahamas....good thing I'm sitting down.

Aw @binsy!  So cute!  I think kids/babies should be allowed if it's the right time/venue.  In Vermont the outdoor concerts I've been to have had a kid-friendly area near the front, it's just done by common consent of the crowd.  Parents put blankets down and let the kids play if they want, or where they can sit with their babies, and everyone respects it.  It's so civilized!  I've been to a couple of Sunday afternoon shows at the Blacksheep, again the kids were all over at the side having a good time (Buck 65 had them up on stage dancing with him -- it was very cute hearing him censor himself on the fly) and if any of them got fractious their folks just brought them outside to settle down.  Again, very civilized...

concert rules:

Ok, i haven't had time ot read through everyone's comments, so this might be repetitive, but here are what i think would be ideal rules (call me a concert snob if you like)..

NO umbrellas anywhere near the stage. I don't care if its raining or super hot, if you desperately need an umbrella, park yourself at the back.

Lawn chairs: again, only at the back.

Don't have obnoxiously loud conversations during the show: I get it, the music's loud, but I don't want to hear about your shitty dating life or plans for tomorrow while I'm trying to rock out. it's disrespectful to the artist, particuarly in a small venue.

if someone accidentally bumps into you while busting a move a few times, don't give them dirty looks. you're at a concert, expect dancing.

finally, don't steal wallets- some guy's wallet got stolen by the dude behind him at the rich aucoin show last night and fights broke out..

I'm shocked that the omnibus crime bill didn't include provisions re caning.

I think it's difficult to apply blanket rules to all concerts. There are differences between indoor and outdoor venues. Kids and hacky sack at outdoor venues? Sure! I took one of mine to wakeride to see k'naan play (although he's 8 and a big k'naan fan, so not quite the same). While Library Voices were playing and it was still light and not too crowded, we were playing catch with  a mini football that some sponsor had been handing out. It was great.

Although the "tall people" rule Russ pointed out applies both to indoor and outdoor.

And, singing along...depends on who it is, doesn't it? The chorus to just about every Library Voices song begs to be sung along with, as loudly as you can.

You are right, that it's not a great place to bring a baby, but my guess is that people who do really really had to for some reason (maybe friend of family of the band).

It is probably a huge hassle to be there that late, Mom or Dad are definitely stressed out aboot the volume and probably had to go to some lengths to find hearing protection for babies, even more stressed about people being bothered by any disruptive sound the kid makes, working super hard to make sure that the kid doesn't start bawling or trying to get him to stop, and when that all becomes too much they probably leave after a couple of songs. It's not really the time of place for babies usually (though sometimes they really like it) and the parents are hyper-aware of that, but most likely had to or really wanted to come. 

The reason I bring it up is that people getting annoyed with you makes it so much worse. The parents are definitely more bothered by the crying than anyone else and will leave. There must be exceptions, but I think this is the most likely scenario.

Dear Short People,

I am very tall and being tall at a show has been a major area of concern for me. I know I'm very tall and can stand pretty much anywhere and have a good sight line. For much shows I stand near the middle/the side because I know I'm tall and if shorter people worm there way infront of me I don't put up much resistance even though I get slower pushed futher back.

That being said at some shows I am a big fan of the band and the lure of being front row is too much. In that case my concern for short people goes out the window and for at least 25% of the set, usually near the end I'll go up to the front. I feel my attitude for people a tall person at a show is pretty considerate. Also if I can just walk up to the front half way through the set without people stopping me, you shorter people need to hold your ground better. I may be tall but I'm not big, I can be stopped from getting to the front.

P.S Chad Vangallen is quite tall.

#239 I could not agree more. This goes for all data collection: you are being asked to provide this data for a reason.  Most likely it will be used to make decisions about resource allocations and funding.  If you want your job to be appropriately supported you should provide detailed, accurate information.

I may or may not do a lot of data analysis that is hampered by poor record keeping.

rage dad: clash, sex pistols, rancid

vengeance dad: sabbath, maiden, priest

I should clarify. The Chills made it big in the 90s. They existed down in NZ before then, but didn't really get any airplay outside of NZ until Submarine Bells (one of the best albums ever)

funny, I've tried to apply to work at a lot of Bridgeheads/independent fair-trade-y cafes, and I had the distinct feeling each time that they were all thinking 'she is not hip enough.'

I propose that for Robbie Burns day in January- a big hullaballo holiday in Scotland celebrating the birthday of their famous writer/poet Robert Burns (yes, they do celebrate artists there!!) CBC should have a bagpipe/Scotland-inspired show.
