Recently, popular rapper Pitbull announced that he and Wal Mart were holding a contest - whichever Wal Mart store's Facebook page earned the most new likes would get a special Pitbull concert in their town. So, naturally, people on the internet decided to hijack the contest and send Pitbull to Kodiak, Alaska - population 6130. It worked.

As the internet becomes more and more influential, companies and musicians alike are forever searching for new ways to use social media platforms to connect with people. In all the excitement about getting a bunch of new Facebook likes or Twitter followers, it's easy to overlook the power of a few pranksters to make mischief. I doubt this is the last time we see something like this happen.

So: would you prank a musician like that? Who? How?

And well we're talking pranks, ever seen any bands prank each other on stage? Off stage? Or have you ever pulled any memorable pranks? Now is the time to spill, we're all friends here!

To answer the question, yes I would participate in such a prank. The who & how are fairly irrelevant: if an opportunity to send an artist I don't enjoy to a faroff land occured, I'd jump at the opportunity.

I have never seen or completed a truly memorable prank. I guess I'm boring.

Good morning! Love the new theme song Graham...

I like that I got to start my Monday off with some Peaches. On the other hand, I despise Pitbull, so that prank is amazing. I'm sure he'll find some excuse not to go.

I think the last prank I pulled was telling my roommate last year someone had keyed a huge scratch across his minivan, but it only worked because he was too lazy to walk outside and look.

Prank:

In high school my friends and I had a great prank going on. We were known at "The Bandits" and we would go to parties or school events and saran wrap people's cars. It was 2 years until anyone found out it was us.

Social media started to play a part in it too. This was when Facebook was very new in high schools and we created a "Bandit's" profile page and would chat with people in our class. One guy was trying to convince us to reveal our identities to him and we didn't like this, so we left my friend's little brother to chat with him on facebook and drove to his house, hid in his ditch and then when the coast was clear, saran wrapped his car in his driveway. Then we drove back home, got on facebook, declined his offer and told him to look outside his window.

It was great...we were legends.

Actually, I now remember a good one in which I participated. I spent a summer living in one of the decomissioned Diefenbunkers while doing glider training as an Air Cadet. Imagine living 10m below ground. No windows, constant temperature, low humming of life support systems, etc. If the weather was bad we had the chance to sleep in, the only thing stopping you is your circadian rhythm (but we fought that hard). Anyway, one night one of the guys went to sleep early. Around 11 pm we all donned our flight suits and grabbed our kneeboards and gear, and started rushing up and down the hallway. Our flight commander pounded on his door and shouted "Alex, Alex, you're late, let's go, report for breakfast!" We had changed his watch to read 6:55 am, as we were to report at 6:50. We watched him leap out of the top bunk, start shouting, haul his locker open and jump in to his flight suit, running out the long access tunnel behind us, only to emerge in the pitch black night. It goes without saying the Commanding Officer came out the next day to tell us that that was inappropriate, apparently sleep is critical for flight training.

Grimes is starting to grow on me. I think I heard about her personal life before hearing her music, and I thought some things were too crazy even for me. Perhaps I'm not as unbiased as I thought. Anyway, a shop was playing her music as I walked past yesterday, and I paused to enjoy it. I wonder what her odds are for the Polaris Prize?

@Benoit: Yeah, they read that comment aloud on stage. I was a little red-faced (probably a LOT red-faced) but they gave me a free t-shirt for it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to deliver as well on my "fan-girl" promise as I'd hoped (my one friend was being a buzz-kill and it was putting me off). Regardless, it was probably the greatest thing ever, so thank you for making that possible!

I am just checking in before getting on the plane in London to return to real life at home. Not totally real life as I am on holidays, but there is an email for an $1800 bill waiting for me, already a call from work to return, so that's about as real as it gets I suppose.

Thanks to every single one of you I spent time with this weekend, you are all awesome. Scissor kickers, carebear dressers, ALL CAPS'ers, bicycle lenders, book writers...each and every one of you.

Hi blog! No music for me this weekend, the inlaws got in on Saturday so we couldn't take in Dawson this year.

BLOG QUESTION

I think one of the best pranks I ever pulled was in first year of university, me and 3 other guys went down to the pet store and bought a GIANT bag of crickets. We split them up into 8 bags and then put the end of the bag under the doors of a bunch of the girl's rooms on our floor. They all woke up with crickets all over their rooms. One lived for weeks, chirping away somewhere in their closet in the wee hours of the night.

Special shout out to CDNz1for organizing breakfast on Sat.Superstar of the weekend for me was Joel Plaskett. I've never seen him with the Emergency and it blew my mind. @Flannel -- it would be; and, while not explicit, that was my intent. I really love O My Heart, and various other songs on Eureka, but never really got to love The Stand. So, yes - I'm a Mother Mother fan, and am just stating my enjoyment of this new track.

laurita, biking: I, who cycle in Ottawa (not quite as hairy as Montreal), and have never worn a helmet, I always well a day-glo, traffic repellent vest; I also have blinkety lights fore and aft for when the light goes down. I consider those a minimum.

I've just gotten a head-strapped Petzl 4-LED light, and may start wearing it (or at least having it available) against horrible conditions -- it shines where you look, so that's really useful -- or for actual lighting, it's that powerful.

@knotty -- yeah, talk about an ever changing sound for Mother Mother! I'd think it's a real risk for a band to change that much, that quickly, but who knows! As long as they're playing what they love, they'll find an audience.

@ Benoit: I've noticed that in Montreal, they have a lot of bike lanes in actual roads, which is great for gettin' to places like school,work,every day use sorta thang.but there aren't a whole lot of 'scenic' bike routes through nice green spaces and all, at least that I've seen. And it seems like Ottawa is the opposite. I once made the mistake of trying to bike down Rideau street-you know, the one with the bike lane WITH MOVING CARS ON EITHER SIDE. dear lord.

Taste in band, favourite over the past three years: The Library Voices.

Ever since I found out about them around the time of the EP Hunting Ghosts, which yielded Step Off the Map and Float, off Ghost hunters, they've remained (IMO) one the most consistently productive bands; good songs all the time.
