Back in June, we caught up with Hannibal Buress, one of the funniest dudes in the world right now. The New York City-via-Chicago comedian recently released a critically acclaimed standup special, Animal Furnace (rhymes with Hannibal Buress), and this week he’s performing at the 30th anniversary edition of the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal.
When asked to name some musical heroes, the famous hip-hop fan had a surprising list.
“Paul McCartney,” he replied. “Lisa Loeb. Lenny Kravitz. Postal Service. Little Dragon. Uhh – Lisa Loeb. So nice, I had to say it twice. It’s all about the glasses man. No, I feel like more than 95 per cent of bands or musicians have at least one song that I would really like. I just need to have the energy to find it.”
Because hip-hop comes up in his act – check the hilarious stories from “MOE” on Animal Furnace – we asked Buress about his current favourites.
“Right now, I’m listening to a lot of Curren$y,” he said. “I got his new album, The Stoned Immaculate, it’s really good. There’s a lot of different production from him on there. Big K.R.I.T. I like a lot, he has a bunch of really good mixtapes and his album just came out. Wiz Khalifa I enjoy. Kanye West and Jay-Z, Mos Def … there’s a lot man. I could go on.”
But what about some desert island discs?
“I’d probably bring an Xbox or a PlayStation,” he answered.
No, it has to be a CD. The desert island has nothing on it but a stereo that plays CDs.
“Fine,” Buress said. “I’d bring a special CD that summons a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.”
