Rising Toronto MC JD Era has had quite a year already, releasing his lauded No Handouts mixtape this past April and getting co-signed by none other than Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan. This Saturday, July 14, JD Era performs with Freedom Writers as part of the SoundClash Festival in Toronto.
What was the first hip-hop record you ever bought and where'd you get it?
The first hip-hop CD I bought with my own money was Juvenile’s 400 Degreez from HMV. I think it was money from my first and last newspaper route. I remember seeing Juvenile's video "Ha" on TV and not understanding anything he was saying because of his heavy southern accent. I saw his CD that same week and the rest was history.
Where did the name that you perform under come from exactly?
When I was a kid I used to always jot down JD Era on books and notepads. Everyone called me JD around the ball courts when I was growing up, and era is a timeline. So it was my way of saying it’s my time. It just kind of stuck as I transitioned into rap.
What was the last book you read and how was it?
The last book I read was Invincible by a rapper from the Lox, Styles P. I actually got the book from him when he came on tour to Canada last month. He was mad cool and signed everyone’s copy. I was surprised at how good it was considering it was his first novel. People should definitely check it out.
Where is your favourite place to eat on planet Earth and what are we having?
My favourite place to eat is Mama Era's kitchen! And we're having fried rice and fried chicken. I'm sure everyone thinks their mom's cooking is the best, but Mama Era's fried rice is the truth!
Which artist, living or dead, would you most like to collaborate with and why?
Living, I'd like to do a song with Akon. I think it would be the battle of the super Africans. And dead, I'd say Biggie. Biggie, to me, was the ultimate MC. Between his lyrics and how he switched his flow up, I think he would have been killing the game right now, so a song with him would be epic.
See JD Era perform at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto on Saturday, July 14.
