I think the prize and other prizes for the arts (the Sobey Award, Giller etc.) are great but with music, do you pick a winner because its different or because its good? Impossible task... I say draw the name of the winner from a hat. Why the heck not?

I'm not sure how to read the temperature for this year's Polaris. It should be interesting nonetheless. There is who you want to win and who you think will win, and then who is going to win. Do the the three intersect somewhere? Probably not.

I'm only leaving out Joel Plaskett Emergency because, while I loved the record, I'm not sure if it fits with the Polaris M.O. of 'breaking new ground' or whatever. There's something very 'tried and true' about the album to me-which is not a bad thing! just not Polaris Prize-worthy in my book.

I'm currently winning the Euro Cup pool at work right now with knowing very little about soccer. I should probably enter this Polaris pool!!

Man, we really do need that R3 underground railroad.

My grandmother was born during the 18 months my great-grandfather was working some job in Boston (back in the early '30s) and has lived on PEI (where her family has lived since around 1750) for the past ~78 years. She still hasn't bothered to get her Canadian citizenship though.

Not really a draft dodger at all, I just find it funny how long people wait sometimes, such as FT's pal, who waited 40+ years.

Funny it is harder to choose a shortlist than it was to pick my albums FOR the shortlist...

@flannel tom - i lived in Brooklyn last summer on an air mattress on my kitchen floor of my sister's apartment. it was great though. I was an unpaid intern for a music booking agency that i really looked up to, but i honestly learned nothing from them and mostly just did bitch work. Bklyn is great, but so so expensive. and a $30 train ride from where I'm currently located.

@TheIceman Thanks for the advice! I'd love to connect with more Canadian music lovers in my area. I feel we are a rare breed. I play the R3 app through my iphone at work, so my office is getting some northern exposure. I've seen a few Canadian bands in the NY/NJ area. off the top of my head I've seen Basia Bulat, Braids, Stars, Broken Social Scene, and I booked Forest City Lovers are my college in upstate New York two years ago.

@kirk I'm not offended! I think it's both silly and interesting. The first generation to have grown up with the internet is now making music with access to basically every piece of recorded music ever.

@Iceman - Yeah, I guess you're right.  But actually in yesterday's case, the seller didn't sell to Canada.  I just was used to move the product along.  That was all.  Was that wrong?  I have no idea.  This was NOT done to avoid duty, but simply get the bicycle parts to Vancouver.  No different if he sent them to me and I brought them to Vancouver.

@Laurita - In the settings for your profile, click the down arrow beside your name and go to settings to edit your images. There is a little icon on the picture that lets you crop the picture for either landscape or square. The landscape I believe is used for your blog pic and the squares in your actual profile. Is that what you mean?

Noise Pop and Another Planet Entertainment are thrilled to announce the lineup for the sixth running of the Treasure Island Music Festival on October 13th & 14th, 2012. Saturday, October 13th will be headlined by Girl Talk, making him the first artist to ever return to Treasure Island, while Sunday, October 14th will be headlined by The xx, who will be making their only U.S. festival appearance in 2012. I guess that I should mention that yesterday, just before I went and shipped bicycle parts to Canada, I turned over a lot of money but became the sole owner in my house - the final issue dealing with my divorce.  So, now, after all this time, the house is mine.

@tb3-that's really neat! Did you go to pow wows? I agree; the drums resonate somewhere deep in your bones; it's wonderful.

There's this small Island called Victoria Island/Turtle Island in the middle of the Ottawa  river that you see from the bridge,but I've never been able to make it out there for the yearly pow wows. Would love to sometime, though.

Off-topic, kind of interesting though: Devin Cuddy, son of Blue Rodeo frontman, working on debut album

The best part was learning about the culture of my classmates.

One of my favourite part of the programming we do for Home County every year is the Pow Wow we have! The group is called Naahi. When, their drums fire up in the park, I invariably drop into the rhythm and make my way to the stage we have them on. I love the sound and colour. 

@ Tb3-ah man. that sounds so beautiful, in many different ways. Would love to see it sometime.

On a somewhat unrelated note: normally I find The Acorn too slow and sleepy-but this song is a nice change!

@ lana - this song, Crooked legs by Acorn is one that brings me back to a few years ago, roadtripping in summer. Excellent song.

A Synth Culture Reborn?

I wonder whether a lot of the old analog synth scene in music was merely swept away by all the new tech in the 1980's? Hip-Hop culture/sampling, Roland-808's, turntablism etc., and this resurgence is a symptom of that? Maybe it wasn't explored to it's fullest? There's a tinge of Retro, but also some innovation going on too in this new generation of synth players, I'd say.

I find the stuff that grates on my nerves the most is that which is the stuff that is so deliberately sounding like Depeche Mode, The Cure, NIN etc. All that depressing stuff that was (IMO) horrible shite to begin with. Now there are a slew of bands being played on R3 (and probably elsewhere too) that make no effort to bring anything new to the table, they are just rehashing the same vibe.

For me, a band that is pure indie pop like Library Voices, they have several songs ruined (moreso live) by the wails of the synthesizer. It's like the words "indie rock" has in some cases become synonomous with synthesizer.

In the words of Mr. Ed I believe it was, "No sir, I don't like it". 

Most micro-brews also make a root beer - like Propeller in Halifax. It's amazing.

Garrison makes Cannonball Sodas. One is a root beer. I haven't had either Garrison or Propeller pop/soda/softdrink enough to really tell you which is better, but you can't go wrong either way.

Off topic: I started using those Tide Pod things for laundry cause I hate taking a whole jug of detergent down to the laundry room in my building all the time. I must say, they work really well AND small great! I've been smelling my shirt all day.. it's awesome.
