Thanks again to all of you who participated in our live chat with Dave Bidini on Wednesday. I’d never conducted an interview that way before and, just as we got started, Bidini expressed his own reservations about taking part, but you guys made it work with your excellent questions. I think for subsequent chats, I’ll wanna get you involved sooner and more frequently.

Still, having said all of that, I’m curious: what did you make of this live chat? Was it useful in understanding where Bidini was coming from in Writing Gordon Lightfoot? Please share your thoughts below.

Well, since May is almost done and we spoke to our author, it’s time to move along here and figure out a new book club selection for June. We met up with Lightfoot for a month so maybe now it’s a good idea to catch up with one of his biggest fans: Bob Dylan.

I’m a tremendous devotee of Dylan’s and I’ve travelled across North America to see him a number of times over the past decade. As I write this, it’s his 71st birthday. I’m not sure what to get him; he never gave me his sweater size. So, instead, my gift for Bobby D is to have us focus upon The Ballad of Bob Dylan, a biographical account told via four pivotal concerts and drawing from interviews with the songwriter’s contemporaries, by acclaimed poet/biographer Daniel Mark Epstein. This book came out last fall but was just issued on paperback and I have yet to read a word of it. I’m waiting for you to join me so let’s make that happen.

I have copies to offer to five people (not employed by the CBC) who check out this description of The Ballad of Bob Dylan and post thoughtful questions for Mr. Epstein about his book below. I’ll let you know if your question was deemed a winner (you can only win once BTW) so check back here for a response. If you do win, please send your name (real and blog), mailing address and winning answer to rock@cbc.ca with “Happy birthday Bob Dylan” in the subject line.

Any final thoughts to share about Writing Gordon Lightfoot? Are you a fan of Bob Dylan? Looking forward to The Ballad of Bob Dylan? Let Vish know.
