Cadence Weapon has been deemed a sonic pioneer, pushing hip-hop and electronic music boundaries. He’s a critically acclaimed rapper who hasn’t gone unnoticed: two of his albums, Breaking Kayfabe and Afterparty Babies, were nominated for the Polaris Music Prize. He also served as Edmonton’s poet laureate for a two-year term. Oh, and he's 26 years old.
Pemberton was born with hip-hop in his DNA. His father was a radio DJ and is credited for introducing hip-hop to Pemberton’s hometown of Edmonton, Alberta through his show The Black Experience in Sound on CJSR-FM. At the age of 13 Pemberton began rapping and concentrating on making music, releasing his first underground mixtape Cadence Weapon is the Black Hand in 2005.
Flash foward seven years and Hope in Dirt City promises to be a “ground breaking achievement in hip-hop” that is composed “of a unique hybrid of psychedelic soul, old-school rap, 'intelligent dance music' and mutant disco that has Cadence Weapon bringing rap back to its essence” according to a press release.
