After posting New Order’s version of “Turn The Heater On” yesterday, we got a comment on the CBC Electronic Facebook page talking about all the great dub mixes the band has put out over the years. For the rest of this week’s dub appreciation posts, we’ll look at some of New Order’s dub output.

First up is “Dub-Vulture”, the b-side of the 1985 12-inch single “Sub-Culture.” This was the first New Order single to be drastically remixed from the original album, cut by John Robie. The story is that Factory Records designer Peter Saville hated the remix so much, he refused to design a sleeve for the single. On release, it appeared in stores in a plain black jacket, although Saville relented in the end and did the typography for the label.

“Sub-Culture” was never one of my favourite New Order songs, but the dub version seems to be much more interesting with its snatches of vocals, bigger drum sound and the descent into chaotic noise at the end.
