I am not offended by much that individuals do. Words and finger gestures have little impact on me. Things that do offend me tend to be much broader issues like rampant out of control capitalism, ultra-conservative politics, racism, and homophobia, and such. 

Someone giving the finger at the Super Bowl, that is just funny to me.

I think this piece from the New Yorker hit the nail on the head: "M.I.A. Shouldn't Have Apologized." The best part of the piece is when the writer points out that Tim Winter of the Parents Television Council said it was offensive - but didn't raise concern over the blatantly sexist ads that played through the Super Bowl... it's pretty ridiculous, when you think about it. It's almost a case of, "well, if you're going to censor that, why don't you censor more? Where do you draw the line?" It's always a case of figuring out where to draw that godforsaken line. It's also interesting to see how we've become desensitized - violence and sexism in the mainstream/mass media is nothing, and yet someone flipping the bird is beyond unacceptable. 

I think one of the best cases of "is it offensive?" in Canadian music right now is Fucked Up. Just mentioning their name. It's still such a bone of contention in Canadian media, it's hilarious.

I welcome the "bird" it's the most basic form of communication. Everyone knows what it means, no need to explain.  I like to add the super happy smile then watch the recipients head almost explode.

It sickens me, actually.

As an editor of fiction and nonfiction prose in books, I usually recommend to authors that they remove profanity in dialogue and description. This is not because I'm prudish, but because obscenities on the printed page carry an undue amount of weight, and invariably make readers stop in their tracks and ponder the obscenity. My goal as an editor is to make the written work as fluent as possible, and the reading experience as fluid as possible. Obscenities in print obstruct this. Obscenities in film, tv, and music don't seem to have the same effect. 

I am offended by stupidity, rudeness, and crudeness. In contemporary culture, those ugly things are often linked up with explicit sex and violence. I saw a really stupid movie trailer last weekend for a film where two guys are vying for the same woman, played by Reese Witherspoon, The guys are both spies, assassin types. The trailer showed each guy about to get it on with the woman when his nemesis explodes a bomb, blows up a building, whatever to prevent the tryst. Now that's stupid and offensive. 

Wasn't rock and roll borne out of dissent and making statements to get a rise out of people?

That this much of a deal is being made about someone flipping the bird during the halftime show of the super bowl, advances the notion that rock and roll might be dead.

It offends me that people put their children in situations the kid doesn't want to be in. Put them through pain just to have pretty nails, tell them they "didn't do good"* when they tried their best and call them ugly when they cry and then claim it's all with love and it'll help them when they're older. In fact, your kid is going to grow up to hate you and probably be a huge burden on your family. Give the poor thing a hug! Geez.

perhaps its because I grew up listening to NWA, but very little offends me in terms of "offensive words and gestures". 

What really offends me is when decisions are made that adversely affect people (and animals) when there are no reprecussions or punishments delivered to the offending parties.  (ie: the collapse of the american housing market and all of the people rendered homeless while others profited disgusting amounts from their demise; the lack of the RCMP and VPD to admit their failings in the arrest of Pickton leading to many more victoms, etc)

I'm also offended that our prime minister is in China RIGHT now promising them access to our oil and natural resources, despite clear indications that the majority of Canadians don't support this. 

It seems strange to me that people are quick to be offended by words and gestures that really hurt nobody, when there are real issues which should be focused on and discussed.

A society, people and perhaps a world, that place the acquisition of money, property and posessions over everything else. The people of the world have been seduced, coerced and forced into the idea that money trumps all. Money causes Politicians to pass legislation that they know will be harmful, because it is financially beneficial (like the Harper promotion of the Canadian Asbestos Industry). Money causes people to abandon their family, their children in order to further their financial assets. Money causes us to poison our world and destroy our environment.

We need to put things in proper perspective and put values where they really belong.

Ottawa has a pretty bad rep for being overly sensitive and overly politically correct. Honestly, after working at the Mecca of political correctness—Parliament—this reputation has proven to be warranted. A large part of my job is writing speeches for some folks who do a lot of speaking, and lets just say it takes SO much time ensuring that said speeches are completely inoffensive and political correct (which unfortunately means that the only jokes i can ever squeeze in them are jokes relating to weather. How lame). Also,  I have gotten flack from coworkers and political staff for wearing my R3 toque around parliament, as somehow, i could offend someone. Ottawa, can we calm down please?

Oh, and I am not an Ottawa prude. I am rarely offended.

My wife and I moved into a new pad last summer.  We have some neighbours a few doors down that have completely ignored us since day one.  To the point where they walk by and we'll say "Hello", only to be totally ignored.  I'm talking, they're about 5ft from one of us when we greet them and it's as if we don't even exist.

Not only do they compeletly ignore us, they stare at our dog.  Like full on death stare.  Not a, I'm scared of dogs so I'm keeping an eye on him type stare.  A, Darth Vadar style mind control type of stare.

While my wife and I now find the whole thing hilarious I think my dog takes great offense to it.  I've seen some cold hearts melt when they meet him for the first time. At the very least, I think he's pretty confused and most definitely offended.  Poor bastard.

i like using the word "cunt" because it's the one word that still offends people. sometimes my fellow feminists will say that it shouldn't be used as an insult because it demeans female genitalia, but my response is that i'm also demean male genitalia by using"dick" and "cock" as an insult, and demean all genders by using "asshole".  (Cue Team America speech....)

I, too, am one for the judicious recuntifying of English. Being francophone to start off with, I am well acquainted with the French "con", which is roughly equivalent to "dick" or "dipshit" on the scale of insults, but is otherwise the exact equivalent of that oh so nasty English word.

I get offended when people make jokes about mental health and/or disabilties. When people make jokes about commiting suicide ("I feel like dying" or "kill me"). I get upset. I know that it's become common language in our society, but it still bothers me. 

I have defended a woman with disabilities on a bus in London. She was being harrassed by two teenage boys. When I got off the bus, know what I did. Flipped them off. No regrets.

I think people should more often try to correct the shit-behaviour of others, especially youths. I don't mean to single out the teen-aged, but I take the bus a lot and have witnessed behaviour that I know those young people later regret and only engaged in for acceptance by their peers. Not enough people willing to stand up to it. I don't think I would even have had the gumption to flip them off.

I’m more annoyed by the overuse of the main four-letter word we all know, often used with “ing” at the end, than to its occasional use for emphasis.

For instance, I was cycling through downtown, past a building of not extremely high earners, and a couple of women had just lit up a cigarette. One started speaking, something like “I fucken went to the store yester…”, the other answered something, I don’t know what, and “fucken” was the second or third “word”. That I mind.

Also, when reading an article in Cracked.com, when ‘fucking” is used instead of “very”. Trying too hard. Doesn’t make you hip.

On the other hand, its occasional use as an intensifier, or the odd colloquial use (as in “fucken ay”), I don’t mind those at all. They give bounce and jounce to spoken English.



I don't know. I can't but help wonder if 'it's' all a big ploy. That's what I thought when there was that whole scandal over the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction years ago. If you think about it, how many people are watching the football game, and then it becomes the big media focus afterwards. The supposed incident. "Let's all think about this stupid thing that happened at a football game, rather than...." more important, significant things. Like it's a diversion. At the time I thought, even politically. Like maybe the whole thing's set up. This time, I don't know. But, it all seems so silly.

Much to my suprise I saw this 'theory' stated in some movie, recently. Maybe it was that comedy/satire whatever Hot Shots.

In a functional media system, people who put themselves into the news (by pursuing fame, making notorious and public comments) should be fair game for critical discussion. Afterall, you were asking him to share his perspective -- you weren't simply ridiculing him.

I think the topic of offensiveness is such a large one. It can range from small acts and actions of offensiveness to much larger and more serious ones.

I had something happen to me recently that I found so, so offensive and hurtful. Seems that the people involved don't seem to think so or realise it. So I can't dwell on it, tho I do. I'm just trying to let it go. I can't go to the people involved and tell them how offensive I think what happened is. I guess it's mostly a matter of different values in this case. Tryin to forgive and forget.

I guess I think any act of disrespect towards another is offensive. But that covers a wide range of behaviour and seriousness.

that was fabulous, i love celebrity meltdowns. i think Christian Bale's is my favoruite, it spawned so many great quotes - my girlfriend even had it as her alarm clock for a while, we'd wake up to Bale losing it and it we'd laugh our assess off before even getting out of bed! Billy Bob Thornton's on Q was also good.

That's interesting! I worked in printing for ten years, mostly with guys. I got used to a certain way of relating on the job. Lots of sarcasm, rudeness even, ribbing....sortof 'tough guy' behaviour. I got used to it and enjoyed that way of working and relating.

So, for a few jobs later that were predominated with female coworkers, I was suprised! I had to be way more careful what I'd say (even casually). Words tended to be taken way more literally and seriously. My coworikers were way more sensitive about words that were said even in jest. After a while, I realised I was just used to working with guys, mostly. And had to adjust and change to a more emotional, personal way of relating on the job.  

That's a good topic in terms of offensive behaviour! On the job situations and talk and banter.

yeah, my guys used it mostly as an insult, but they did use it to jocularly insult each other, which might be was Grant was referring too. but word choice and accent really are so different based on region/class. my gf's family is in England and when they start talking to each other i get totally lost. and in the movie Kill List i can barely make out what's going on, but i can understand the kids in Skins just fine. and i've been to Scotland and the people in Edinburgh sound totally different from the people in Glasgow. there are, of course, some regional differences here (i'm originally from northern Ontario) but they're really minor.

Ya, what's considered offensive can be somewhat geographically related. I once worked with someone from another country. Every afternoon he would buy us cans of pop, and then we'd sit around and drink it and burp. And giggle. As in his country burping was ok or even deemed appropriate. The rest of us found it pretty funny. But, after a while I'd find myself sometimes randomly burping when in a restaurant or cafe. It had started to become 'normal'. I'd catch myself and feel embarassed. And tried not to do that unless in that one work (and cultural) situation.

what brought this on?

A good friend lives on an acreage and somehow got teamed up with Neighbour's Dog (http://www.theneighborsdog.tv) which records house concerts for their tv show. Instead of having the concert in their house, they had it in the insulated and heated (and nicely finished) hayloft in the barn. When he called me up and asked if I wanted to see BARK in his barn, the immediate answer was "YES!"

Blackie & The Rodeo Kings are playing the Broadway Theatre in Saskatoon tonight. Pretty sure that's been sold out for a while though. 

I've hosted 16 or so house concerts in my basement but none have ever been as loud or as intense as this one was!  Holy sh!t it was awesome. 

I suggest you use my compromise: burp whenever you have to (no need for a Bart Simpson approach), then say "sorry".

Same as with certain other unnamed gasses: they must come out.

right on! it's fucking HARD to quit, that shit is really addictive, and yet people treat us smokers like we were somehow choosing to be eeeeeevil. maybe it was a choice back when i was young and foolish, but that's also the age i thought i was the ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD who was attracted to both boys and girls and that i would be miserable my whole life if i didn't choose one or the other. people are dumb when they're teenagers and unfortunately picking up smoking is one dumb choice that soon becomes an addiction. but hey, so is picking up crack or heroin, at least i never did that, right?

I don't think I'm 100% nerd but I have a little bit of the nerd in me, for sure. I was more that way as a child. 

I do know some super nerdy, classic nerd types of course. Met many in the computer/technical world. I'm probably a bit too chatty to be considered a complete nerd.

I do remember in the 90's tho, when there was a big social transition from nerds being considered underdogs and socially inadequate or whatever, to suddenly being considered sexy, admirable, etc.

The dutch tend to stay true to the classic anatomy based swears like "klootzak" = nutsack, but they have this weird thing about cancer- it is supposidly a relic from when diseases were really wide spread in Europe pre-modern medicine, and one of the worst curses you could wish upon them was for them to get sick. So you might hear "Kanker hoer" (cancer whore!) or something like that hanging around in the Netherlands.

When you have a second language, especially when I was younger, the first thing everyone wants to hear you say are the swear words. I am a bit rusty with the dutch now, but I can still keep up with the my mother on a bad day (she swears like a sailor).

I second the earlier comment on context.  In music at least context is everything.  I have no problem with the kinds of language and imagery Missy Elliott, Alanis Morissette, Maryanne Faithfull, and others have used.  Frank Zappa, otoh, I have problems with, because, to me at least, his profanity comes across as gratuitous.  Why Frank, why?  What MIA did was pointless, and for that reason I don’t like it very much, but it was a pretty minor incident imo. 

And to carry on a theme, I’m offended by the belief that all economic growth is bad.  If you start a company that recycles waste materials, for example, that’s economic growth. 

I’m also offended by psudo-environmentalists.  You’re not an environmentalist just because you call yourself one.  You’re an environmentalist because the positions you support actually make sense environmentally.

While the chocolate bars may seem odd, at an (involuntary) trip to Wal-Mart there was a large display of their generic "feminine hygiene products" in the middle of the aisle.

One was GLUED to the shelf, with the word SAMPLE written in RED MARKER across it. 

And I haven't stepped foot in Wal-Mart since.

A bin at the Loblaw we frequent once had a banner above it that said:

"SAVINGS THAT MOMS WILL LOVE" among the many items on sale in the bin, were tampons! Apparently Moms love periods and saving on tampons.

Just beside the bin, a bunch of Moms were fist pumping and calling their girlfriends to alert them.

Not offensive but rather childish!
