Every time I finish I book or see a movie I think: will this become a musical?

On the weekend I read that the 1970’s horror classic Carrie – the musical was being revived. Revived? I had no idea it even was a musical! Then again I only found out last year that Silence of the Lambs was already a musical. Though I really shouldn’t be surprised by any of this since a couple of years ago I saw the Evil Dead musical here in Vancouver.

I’m not the biggest musical fan, though I have a few faves: Jesus Christ Superstar, The Sound of Music, Hairspray. I also saw Wicked last year and that was pretty great. And once upon a time I was in my high school production of Godspell.

My overall impression is that we all must love these things immensely, though it does seem that coming up with ideas must be a challenge. So on today’s show, a challenge for you:

WHAT BOOK/MOVIE/STORY DESERVES A MUSICAL?

I read that Drake would love to star in a movie version of US President’s Barak Obama’s life. Why not a musical? And now that I’m thinking big here, what if Leonard Cohen penned the life of Pierre Trudeau? Your turn…

But the best musicals were all made in the 50's. Too many modern musicals take bad ideas or mediocre movies and make them into sub-par musicals.

umm....does the one my old video store staff & I were trying to make with all the toys we had lying around the store work? we were using established tunes - i.e. "Chewbacca What a Wookie!" by Supernova & that old Bill Murray lounge tune.

sadly, no video still exists. but there were singing & dancing stormtroopers. I promise you.

Has anyone seen Slings and Arrows? In it there is East Hastings the Musical, about a druggie hooker and the john who falls in love with her. It is fictional (sadly), but soo hilarious.

Best Musical I ever saw was Evil Dead, The Musical. I saw it twice.

There was also a movie by the guys from South Park called Cannibal! The Musical that was made into a stage show, but I never saw it.

it's readily available on netflix in the US. the real Canadian I worked with at Borders & I used to recommend it to folk all the time. so there's a pocket of fans in Chicago. but yeah, it should get way more attention than it does.

there's very little cross over with tv here, unless PBS picks up something British for Masterpiece. or the same 4 comedies for the last 30 years (Fawlty Towers, Keeping Up APpearances, you know). I've lived in 9 different states & the only Canadian tv we see is Red Green & Anne of Green Gables.

you would probalby like that Aussie show I was recommending the other day "Love My Way". It's really good. there's funny stuff but it's still a drama. it'll break your heart & then win it back. but in a good way.

It is nice that it is on Netflix. It was only shown on premium cable here. I got it from the library to watch.

I will check out Love My Way. If you like Downton and Slings and Arrows, you must have good taste.

i will warn you - it's really good. very good cast. about 3/4 of the way thru the first season you will hate me for getting you started. but stick with it. if you have trouble finding, let me know. I have it on dvd & can send.

since you like DA you might also check out "North & South". it's not as soapy. but it's very good. & Bates is in it. i actually started with DA last season because I was already a fan of his & Jim Carter (Carson) from their earlier work. Pretty sure most people don't remember they saw Carson in a dress in "Shakespeare in Love"

he has a terrific song called "Gospel Music for Secular People" & I would love to see someone jump on that & expound the idea into a musical. maybe something along the lines of Cotton Patch Gospel except not religious. does that make sense?

Jason Reitman just announced today that will be his next film at the LACMA live reads. I wish they were taping them.

I come from a theatre background and loathed most musicals as a lot of them are total pap. However I eventually discovered some awesome ones and when they are good they are really really good! I particularly like Cannibal: The Musical and Hedwig & The Angry Inch. Dancer In The Dark is also fantastic, though controversial. I also saw Evil Dead: The Musical (@marie_curious) and yes, that's great fun too.

This has nothing to do with the blog post, but I am trying to find a song. It is the one that has the lyrics something like "Don't let the devil get ya" and it is a male singer kind of screaming the lyrics. I loved that song and now can't remember the artist/title. it was part of the Jason Reitman live read series & I was ok with some of the casting but most of it was kinda bad. Paul Rudd as Westley? is Westley 40?

they did get points for having Rob Reiner read the Grandpa/narrator part but mostly it just made me cranky. tho that's slightly more tolerable - the live read idea as opposed to a remake.

because nvp is right. it would that. or the Taylor's Swift & Lautner. I feel like I need a shower now for using all those names in reference to Princess Bride.

The Chameleon Circuit is the part of the TARDIS that allows it to change its appearance. The Doctor's TARDIS has a broken circuit, hence it's stuck as a police box.

it's a mile away. i go all the time. on Sunday's there a farmers mkt on the next block. I'm gonna wash that tarte d'alsace down with some yummy Dutch beer i paid $6 for a six pack of.

you hate me. but i get to shop at Trader Joes so I don't care.

Got the chance to check out the blog for the first time in a while, I missed the blog. Gotta find a job where I can listen to the CEEB3 all day.

I wish there was a musical for my Introduction to Calculus textbook from first year university. I might have done better if things like "as x approaches infinity, then 1/x approaches 0" had a catchy tune to go with them.
