John K. Samson's "Heart of the Continent" may sound familiar to regular listeners. A version of the track was originally included as part of the first offering from an since-abandoned three EP project and has gone on to see a second life as a futher realized rendition on the full length album, Provincial.

A bittersweet song that, according to Samson when interviewed by Craig Norris, tells the story of Winnipeg's old Army Surplus Sales building and deals with "the metaphor of the missing building, the thing that existed and that just doesn't exist anymore and all of the history that goes with it."

With pensive and visual lyrics that hover over a steady guitar and a cardiac drumbeat, "Heart of the Continent" is an affectionate token for a place familiar to everyone, Winnipegger or not.
