Good Day! 

This year instead of beating the winter blahs I have decided to become in essence one with the winter blahs. I am blah!! There is no force that can stop me. 

Also, going out and enjoying shows helps. Besides this winter actually has been relatively mild. 

Agreed with Mike V, it's currently a balmy 3 degrees in Freddy Beach! 

I beat those winter blahs but not having enough time to notice them. Currently working 12 hour days plus 4 hours on Saturdays. So life? what life? Winter? what winter?

Good morning!

How am I beating the winter blahs? Well, like Mike said it's been pretty mild and snowless this year but I definitely still suffer from a lack of sunshine. I guess I just try to stay positive! It's tough sometimes and there have been shitty days but I got over em'! I've also decided to just embrace winter (kind of a bum winter to do that but oh well), I got skates for Christmas and have discovered that skating is actually pretty fun! I planned on toboganning a lot but that hasn't really been possible. Otherwise, yeah, shows help... and beer. And wine. And hot wine. And more beer. :)

Also, I moved out of the basement today like a good kid. I will miss it and cherish my short time there.

I've got some blah's going for sure. I would be ok if there were more snow here. I only got out cross country skiing a few times before it all turned to ice, and is now melting away.

We thought about another trip to Cuba (the last one was when my co host initiative aired in 2009!), but no funds after paying for this move.

Anyway, with the way the weather is trending here lately, I'll be back out on my bike in a few weeks tops, so that will fix things!

This weekend?  The same thing I do every weekend.  Try to take over the world, but fail.  Why?  Because I'll be too busy looking good.

Re: Winter Blahs.

Embrace the Winter!  Media always tells us that winter sucks, whatever... not true! There are so many reasons to look forward to the winter, especially because it seems to get shorter and milder in certain parts of Canada!

I recently saw a show, CBC Doc Zone: Life Below Zero. It showed how in some countries, like Norway, they have adapted their living and lifestyle to embrace the winter.  Instead of trying to fight the inevitable, they found ways to embrace it! This included heated sidewalks for downtown streets, architecture that is build to minimize shadows and wind tunnels, and even mass transit that is cross-country ski friendly.

Watch the episode and you will see the point of heated sidewalks. in a nutshell, Norway is even more socialist than Canada in certain ways, and they have universal healthcare.  Since they only have 1 major city, and all heat is via geothermal, they figured it is MUCH cheaper on scoiety to heat the sidewalks to save costs of healthcare due to injuries of falling, or shoveling.

In addition, the heated sidewalks made the downtown streets more appealing to be on, which means that even when -20 outside, there are still people walking downtown streets and going to restaurant and shops. Good for the local businesses, and the city as a whole benefits.  Its the kinda place I would like to live.

No, not every sidewalk, but they said in Oslo, it is policy that every time there is new roadwork to be done, the roads are converted to heated sidewalks.  eventually it will be all sidewalks.  This probably only concerns downtown areas where there is significant foot traffic. (i would imagine)..

We should just heat our sidewalks with nuclear.

Good Morning, All!

I don't have much in the way of winter blahs this year because what we have been experiencing can only be described as extended fall or early spring. We've had maaaaybe three non-consecutive days of winter weather so far.

Morning :)  To beat the winter blahs I get all bundled up every weekend and sit by the bonfire and have a few beers.  I love the smell of the fire when it's below zero.  It is especially nice if it is snowing.

I think the Trans-Canada Highway should be heated. Couldn't be that expensive.

Yes, she is right, get the licence to suppliment your transit.  There will be times when you will NEED a car to pick something/someone up, or take a weekend trip.  No need to buy a car, when you can rent or get a zipcar.  (way cheaper than ownership!)

Steph, don't be worried. Not that it's not a tough thing to do, driving, and a stick shift. BUT, they have become very good at teaching, my boy took a course some years ago, and was very satisfied. More importantly, he learned how to drive quite well. Same with my wife many years ago, she only learned to drive when well into her twenties, just before having kids, and was a very good driver. (Past tense because she's not with us anymore.)

@benoit, don't believe everything you  see on TV, have the Sweeds ever even fired a rocket into space before?

@Steph: Also, I highly recommend Driver's Ed because like Craig said, it speeds up the process, but it will also lower your insurance dramatically. It lowered mine by $300 annually. Paid off in 2 years once you buy a car.

Steph, driving

Well, your fear of others is well-founded, but the main thing is not to run into others. I make myself responsible for not getting into, or for getting out of, situations caused by others. Which means keeping a really sharp lookout and -- most important -- not letting yourself get distracted, even by talking to a passenger (this is for much later, for when you're so habituated to driving it starts feeling automatic).

That said, your awareness of danger from others remains true. But you've got to get to disregard it. I've been lucky, in my life, I've only been blindsided once (recently) and to repeat, I was lucky: only car damage, and repairable. Not even a sore muscle. Lucky.

This Said The Whale riff and effect is reminiscenct of My Sharona, but I couldn't be the first to note that.

Ontario, like Alberta and Saskatchewan, has Family Day on Monday (3rd Mon. in this month). Much as I appreciate the fact it provides a long-desired statutory holiday in February, the first since Christmastime, I think its designation as Family Day is mushy as anything.
