I am going to throw my hat into this ring of complaining - Grant couldn't you get someone to format that for you so it wasn't ten times as long as it needed to be, full of dead space? 

I don't really take much note of the Juno's myself.  I don't mind watching the performances sometimes though.  I do hope that Rush wins the DVD of the year though, because I love Rush.

as much as Id like to see Arkells, or even SamRoberts, win Group of the Year.... I know its going to end up being NkBk.

I'm glad for you guys that the Junos mean something to you.  The Grammys over here...not so much!

I watched the nominee roll out online. And clapped a lot. So that's a good sign. I don't take TOO much from the awards themselves, but other Canadians do so I love when I see favourites (Cuff the Duke), nominees that are obvious to me (Feist, Dan Mangan) and pleasant surprises (Jenn Grant, Lindi Oretga). I'll ignore the others.

Best new find so far: Bright Morning Stars (Wailin' Jennys) has me intrigued.. it's album art is just gorgeous

Yeah there are some great bands nominated. Disappointed with the best artist and album categories though, but I guess that is to be expected when you base it on record sales?

I think the new category is shows that the audience for the Junos is much less music nerd than we are.

When Dawn and I were at it last year we witnessed 14 yr old girls lose their shit over artists that seemed new to us, yet are likely huge and have been around for a bit too.

It al depends on where your focus is what you already know about.

I... I don't understand the difference between "adult alternative" and "alternative".

I say we start an R3 Junos!  Grant as the host, a sea of touques and plaid in the crowd.  It takes place at a small pub and winners are decided on by the amount of "Grant Style" woooos and yeahs!

I can't get the Juno site to load the full nominee list but I remember knowing all the Hip Hop artists (even though it's not my go-to style of music) and being excited. That seems like something to chat about (maybe people with better knowledge of the genre).

Junos are clearly not the awards for "us". Not the uber music fans, not the music makers.

But they are for family like parents, relatives, and friends who clearly don't 'get' that music stuff we go broker for comsuming or making or both.

When Red Carpet Lee Hower got us into to see Said The Whale at Fanshawe last September and we were talking with the band, Tyler and I got to talking about the Juno. And he put it, much like they do everything else, fairly and with an open mind… He said winning the Juno made his band a much more real thing… a job… to people in his life who didn't quite see it that way.

So, yes the Polaris Awards (and The Buckys) may be awards that make a lot more sense to all of us, let's keep the persepctive that The Junos make an attempt to champion music to an audience that we don't quite "get". Much like they don't "get" us. 

So… at the end of the day, let's just let them be, because those bands that get nominated, and those that win, suddenly just got a whole lot more legitimate to a slew of new eyes and ears.

I think that the Junos are important to me. I think it's important to recognize Canadian artists. Plus most of the artists I would have never heard of if not for R3. So I like to think this is an oppurtunity for my friends and family to see that the music I listen to is  1. real and not random people I make up. and 2. good.   

Colin Stetson for Contemporary Jazz Album of the year!  Hope the Juno's continue their renegade streak in this category like they did with The Happyness Project and Colin gets the win! Mechanical Whales everywhere celebrate, haha.

Nominations are one thing,I just hope the artists  playing on the show are not the same old ones you see from Ontario every year.Put some new artists on that were not nominated ,but need to be seen by Canadians.There are too many bands that are heard ,but not seen as they only play live in certain regains.

  Ep, not an Ontario hater,its just seems every year the show looks the same with artists that I can see on other shows. Put an artist on that doesn't have the money to travel this large country yet should be seen.

I haven't watched the Junos in years (and probably won't this year either because I don't have a tv) but now that I listen to R3 I have realized there are so many great Canadian artists out there and I'm glad to see that the list of nominees includes some acts I really like and am excited for! 

People don't watch the Juno ceremony to see artists they have never heard of though. Besides that is why they have Junofest. That is where you will find all those other bands.

I'm starting to get the feeling they aren't that important??  They aren't as valuable as a Juno I guess? I'm just really excited about the line up of performances and thought other R3'rs would be too.

I hear ya! it really doesn't make sense to me either. but it seems there are many "mainstream" filters they put on through the whole Juno process. I'm not against mainstream (i like music of all popularity if its good), it just seems like the Junos always tries to please the masses to get the ratings.

which is too bad, as they could use this platform to expose so much other good canadian independant music!!!

hahah i totally lucked into it.. the band i had billeted for HPX10 was nominated, and leaving early, so they gave me one of their passes. the friends i was with at it all had their own (some were playing with hannah georgas or girlfriends of people playing with her) so it worked out great that we all got to stay together instead of me being shunned hahaha

So many reasons I want to watch the Junos... and so many reasons I don't want to watch the Junos.

Ya, I guess it was quite a few years ago that I did. (That was a pretty great show, come to think of it. With 54/40 and Hawksley Workman.)

I feel bad that I can't get into Sloan's latter material, considering how much they meant to me in the 90's.

I'll always be able to get into this song!  This very song may have changed the way I look at music.  Can't say for sure, but it was certainly one of them!

Some things I learned today....

1. you must become a new artist when you get played on the radio (aside from the cbc) and when you play only on the cbc you are 'alternative' .

2.  The difference between alternative and adult alternative is that alt is as your parents call "the noise the kids listen to" and adult alt. is an album that you might go out and buy your parents as a gift to try and make them cooler.

3. That only in Canada could two out of 5 best album of the years are holiday albums.

On a positive note, I am thrilled to see some great artists like Hey Rosetta!, Austra, mother mother, the arkells, hollerado, timber timbre, coeur de pirate, and dan mangan (and many others) getting recognized for their hard work. I really have my fingers crossed for Hey Rosetta! since they almost didn’t stand a chance at polaris last year, but created such a fantastic album.

On a more negative note, the album of the year category is an absolute embarrassment (2 christmas albums?!! really?!). Furthermore, we complain a lot about nickelback, but I also think Hedley might be one of canada’s worst exports of all time.

Yeah, like you said, if its good music, french or not, it deserves to be a part of other categories too. Last time I checked, Quebec and NB are a part of Canada, and this is a CANADIAN music award show.

Yeah, but music is cultural. Most of what gets awards in Québec is unknown in the rest of Canada, with rare exceptions; and vice-versa too, though to a lesser extent.

I love this song, Count on Me.

However, my favourite Cuff the Duke album will probably always be Life Stories for Minimum Wage and especially the song Blackheart. I honestly played that album over and over and over for months when going thru an especially hard time. Wayne Petti's mournful singing and lyrics really resonated with me powerfully at the time.

(Plus I'll never forgt the crazy guitar jamming the first few times I saw Cuff the Duke play. First, opening for a Hayden show and later at the Pic Pub.)

Really looking forward to who is on the Home County list this year.

A nomination is a nomination.  Colin Stetson is somewhere between brilliant and unlistenable, so I'm not expecting much more: least of all from the Junos.

Wow. I watched The Twilight Zone on tv, last Friday. He was in that episode. Man, was he handsome back in those days!

Although I have complained a lot about the Juno's today, mostly about their non-sensical category titles, I do think that they have improved vastly over the years and do represent a broader swath of Canadian music now. I also have gained a lot more respect for them today as I have learned about the complexities behind they way they chose to do things the way they do.

I used to love, love the orginal Star Trek series as a kid and had a big crush on 'Captain Kirk'.

(He was surprisingly pretty buff in that Twilight Zone episode. I found it an interesting theme, too. Superstition vs free will or whatever.)

Yeah it was good. Probably one of the few episodes of Twilight that had a happy ending.

On second thought, the criticisms were warrented. The bigger question is why, based on her music or videos, would anybody have expected anything else.
