Every week, the people who bring you CBC Radio 2's In Concert pick three concerts happening across the country that they consider Hot Tickets. This week they recommend concerts by violinist Augustin Hadelich, composer Nico Muhly and ukulele virtuoso James Hill.
Augustin Hadelich performs the Violin Concerto, Op. 14 by Samuel Barber with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17 and 18. Hadelich first caught our attention when he came to the west coast for a Vancouver Recital Society concert. It was simply amazing. He has such command of his instrument and he's tremendously musical. Earlier this year, when he played with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Facebook lit up with the admiration of the orchestra members. Here's a bit of a preview. From 2010, this is the opening of the Barber concerto. Hadelich is performing with the Indianapolois Symphony.
The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony has an exciting program of both new and old musical material on the same Friday and Saturday (Feb. 17, 18). Nico Muhly is one of the hottest young composers active today. He has a longstanding relationship with the KWS and conductor Edwin Outwater, and a brand new work to reveal this weekend. Well, not quite brand new. So Far, So Good was a co-commission of the orchestras of Seattle, Winnipeg and the KWS and received its Canadian premiere at the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra New Music Festival earlier this month.
listenIf you missed the broadcast, you can hear the piece at CBC Music's archive of concerts on demand, and we're sure you'll head to the concert if you're in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. The rest of the program is fantastic as well: Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with guitarist Jason Vieaux, and Ravel's Bolero and Ma Mere L'Oye.
And finally, outside the box a bit, the ukulele.
Yep, you read right! James Hill is a ukulele monster from the east coast. Along with his musical and life partner, cellist Anne Davison, they're playing a show on Friday night in Dartmouth, NS. It's part of the Dartmouth Community Concert Association's winter season. If you've never seen or heard Hill and Davidson play, well here's a little tidbit to get you excited!
