Earlier this week, while asking the CBC Music office for Grammy predictions, I thought I would email my old buddy Grant Lawrence at CBC Radio 3 and ask him to take a stab at the best rock performance category.

Here’s how he responded:

“Ever since my CBC Radio 3 show went all-Canadian in 2007, my knowledge of international music has admittedly suffered, but I’m certainly willing to weigh in with my predictions for the 54th annual Grammy Awards. —Grant.”

With that in mind, here is Grant Lawrence’s prediction for the best rock performance Grammy:

“Down By The Water”
The Decemberists
Track from: The King Is Dead

“Um... where have I been? The last time I heard from these guys they were first on a three-band bill at a complete dump Vancouver that has since been torn down. If they’re still as outrageously librarian-esque as they were then, no Grammy.”

“Walk”
Foo Fighters
Track from: Wasting Light

“I’ve had the Dave Grohl biography in my prize box at CBC Radio 3 for MONTHS. I cannot give it away!! The people have spoken — these guys are obviously cold as ice. No Grammy.”

“The Cave”
Mumford & Sons
Track from: Sigh No More

“This band is a BLATANT rip off of Canada’s Dan Mangan ... meets the soundtrack of “The Hobbit.” DM and JRR called, Mumford! Find your own sound! No Grammy.”

“Lotus Flower”
Radiohead
Track from: The King Of Limbs

“What year is it?! Radiohead put out an album this year?! The last time I saw Thom Yorke at the Grammys I thought he was that kid from Deliverance and assumed he was nominated for Best Bluegrass Performance. No Grammy.”

“Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”
Coldplay
Track from: Mylo Xyloto

“Chris Martin was brilliantly funny on the Ricky Gervais show Extras a few years back, which means his talent stretches well beyond space rock, and those outward displays of different skills often have a bounce back effect. Grammy!”
