I did not watch the show.

Howewver, I knew who Bon Iver was before the show, as I read an interview with him in Mojo for Music magazine, and then saw him on The Colbert Report. Given that exposure, I'm stunned that the world didn't seem to know who he was.

Last year I did watch, and learned about Mumford & Son, which was cool, but they have only served to inform me about Elliot BROOD (which is a very good thing).

I am disappointed that Kanye didn't give his commentary on the winners/non-winners. That should just be built into every show. Maybe he could do some kind of wrap-up at the end.

I go like your new big fancy graphic, it's the best part about the new cbc music, totally.

I don't really care about the grammy's. I think it is funny that Bon Iver got the "Suburbs" treatment (Bonny Bear is HILARIOUS). I didn't watch them, but then again I've never watched any award show, ever.

so - on the new site - Grant's show ends and Lana's show comes on but I can't find where I go to get to the Lana's image/blog. Took me about 10 minutes to get from Craig to Grant at noon, too. There must be an easier way.

I feel stupid :(

I think Justin of Bon Iver is a genuine artist and I liked his acceptance speech. I was suprised to see Kathleen Edwards' smiling face, there. Well, that she was there and obviously very encouraging towards him.

I liked some of the Grammys and some, even most, I did not.

I now like and appreciate Adelle way, way more now, tho! What a classy woman.

I loved the ending with Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters guys, Bruce Springsteen, etc. Dave Grohol obviously kept his promise or vow to drink alot during and after the show. Which I found kind of funny. I also liked the Beach Boys part, alot. Especially with Foster the People who are such cutie pies and really great musicians! The Glen Campbell part was good, cute, but also a little sad.

@Lisa - Your thoughts on the Grammys echoed mine exactly. I was blown away by Civil Wars. In fact I backed up the DVR so I could watch their too short performance again. It was so much better than a whole lot of the over produced crud on the show.

If it meant Sebastien G. and Kathleen E. came to town AND I GOT TO SEE THEM PLAY I would like the Grammy's a lot more. As it is, I get my TV free over the air and Channel 2 seems to be the only one that doesn't come from Mt. Wilson, where I have my antenna pointed. So I didn't watch. I think Twitter did a good enough job tweet-casting it though.

I didn't know what to think about the whole Chris Brown and Rihanna thing! It was obviously a big deal that they both performed there this time. Part of me almost wants him to do well and have a maybe 'comeback' but another part of me wonders "Is he a complete asshole and we are all being naive to not fully acknowledge it?!"

I liked that there was alot of mandolin being played last night. I do not like the Civil Wars or that other new country band (family one) - I think they are mediocre musicians. So what? Being sexy and attractive is more important now than whether you can really sing, etc.? (Although, the woman in Civil Wars is a pretty good singer. I just find their presentation a bit contrived and like a bit of a 'schtick'.)

I caught some of the Grammys.

I did see Adele perform she was a refreshing change, classy and so talented. No need for all the sleazily clad dancers and such.

I also saw "Bonny Bear" win the Best New Artisit award and a beautiful smiling Kathleen E.

amused.

but it was a l o n g show. and i had caught some of the cbc live chat of the eastern feed, but wasn't able to actualy watch until the western feed aired on good old terrestrial cable.

i had mixed feelings about the Chris Brown thing. i was not a fan, and less so after the incident, but the backlash against his appearance just seemed gratuitous. i may be missing something.

I just find them way, way too pretty pretty. She can sing, tho. And in the videos I saw, their whole intimate, romantic, sexy cooing and wooing of each other made me feel like it's slightly voyaristic to watch. But, it's a novelty, I guess so people like it and gravitate to it. Man, there are sooooooo many musicians who are waaay better than that, right now. Singing a similar style. My opinion.

@Benoit - I'm talking about the player listing what song is currently playing. Right now it has no information but still plays the stream. Tried on all three of my browsers and had the same issue. I'll try refreshing again to see if it's fixed

Dear AoA, I think that's currently what experts might call "an intrinsic fuckup" -- it never works well, constantly having to be refreshed using the rectangle on the right, the one that gives you the choice between R2 and R3; ...assuming that THAT contains the current listing (and it may well)

Regarding the Civil Wars - I loved how the two just came out and stood on the podium, him with amplified acoustic, her with her lovely voice and just owned the audience. Just music, no bullshit choreographed stage performance with flash pots, lip synched vocals.

I would agree with that, actually. I guess what I reacted to was their videos that I watched before the Grammys. But, I'd had such, such high expectations of them as people have been raving about them to me for months. I was expecting a bit more folky and rootsy from what people had said.

What I noticed was...that there seemed to be a fair bit of 'angry women' or expression of anger in music and songs by women. First, Taylor Swift's "You're Mean" song, which I always presume is about a man. Then Katy Perry singing quite an angry, f-you song which I kindof presumed might be a bit of a reaction to her short, failed marriage to a man I think she now thinks is quite 'crazy'. Like the whole "You'll never to do that to me again!" expression or vein in the song she sang. However, I have no idea how new that song is. And then finally when Adelle said that her award winning album was inspired by a 'rubbish' relationship.

Maybe, angry isn't quite the right word, tho...

I didn't realize the Grammy's were even on last night. I went to the movies to see a chick flick that wasn't nearly cheesy enough to enjoy on the level that I normally enjoy chick flicks. The quality was a little too high, a trait which ironically makes it less fun to watch.

I checked the winners today, but didn't see anything I cared about. So that's a "nay" on the Grammy's from me.

@Lisa completely unrelated .. did you read the Patton Oswalt book Zombie Spaceship Wasteland? I remember some talk about it on the blog. I haven't read it yet, but happened to walk by it in chapters on Saturday and happened to flip it open to a chapter about his experiences doing stand-up in Surrey. Not flattering, but hilarious. @124th - happy to share. I like them a lot. I will say I don't love every single song but that's true of any band, even some of my very favs.I like the Punch Brothers a lot too. they're very bluegrass but progressive bluegrass. it's tough to explain because there's not much else like it. but they are worth your time, I think. new album out tomorrow. not sure if there's anything free on the site right now but I know I got emailed links when Noam Pikelny's solo album came out.

grammy yays =

-bruno mars performance...i've never been a fan, but last night him & his band kicked out the jams!! horn section, hammond organ, funk bass, great harmonies, james brown style dance moves, gold suits, stomping break down...true musicians!! best part..."tonight we celebrate music, so get off your rich asses and let's have some fun!"

-foo fighters & adele cleaning up with multiple awards...it's nice to see true talent and good music get what it deserves. plus dave grohl's acceptance speech was what's it's all about...it doesnt have to be perfect, it just has to be from the heart and mind.

-the civil wars...kind of shticky, but better than alot of the other crap out there.

grammy nays =

- chris brown. that guy is a loser. i believe in second chances...but not for this guy on this stage.

- nikki minaj performance. what she lacks in talent she tries to make up with over the top stage presentations & "shock". i'm not buying it.

I am always looking out for American bands I might like- now that I am living in the states I find that I look at the local show listing more often than not with a blank look on my face- I have spent a little too much time on R3 the last few years I think. I appreciate any info/links- the R3 american bloggers gave me the head's up on Blind Pilot, who are quickly becoming a favourite of mine (and I managed to miss their sold out show here in Madison, sigh).

@124th . i have the same problem. I know way more Canuck music than I ever did Chicago acts & I'm at sea here in L.A. for local music. I do listen to WXRT out of Chicago & hear some good stuff. I've directed folk there before. They play a wide range & are Canadian friendly too but that's mostly where I find a US band. or when they show up on Letterman. he's pretty good at getting people before they really break. & he's got taste.but i'm happy to share when I find something.

I watch the Grammys to see the artists perform.It is the only time I can see these people live,then I can decide if there record are them or just electronics making them sound good.I don`t watch videos of the band as I don`t think it shows the real them.

thanks, Kathy Jean. I know Amos Lee. he did a tour a few years ago with Bob Dylan & Elvis Costello & some friends saw them in Chicago. but I'll definitely look at the other two.

I'm going to see a band called "Victor & Penny" on Wednesday. Penny is actually my lovely friend Erin McGrane but they're pretty terrific & I'm happy they'll be in L.A. it's what they call "antique pop" this is fun

RE: Nicky Manaj (sp?) theatrical performance was quite confusing. Interesting, but confusing. Even after listening to what you read about her message I'm still not sure I understand it.

I enjoyed Glen Campbell's performance, but it was kind of sad afterward, when he was asking anyone "should I say something, where should I go, what should I do?"

another tool I like is a thing called Jango.

you put in an artist name and creates a "radio station" of that artist plus ones it thinks are similar. You can discover some new stuff that way

The NAY's: way too many commercials... good grief. And boarderline too freak-show, but it is an arts show so embrace it.

Definatrely a NAY!

This is a shallow, glitzy American award in an industry (along with the movie industry) that eats people up or spits them out according to whether they are the favour of the month or not. They don't even see the irony in "honouring" an artist who they pillaried while they were acting out their addictions that life in that industry likely contributed to.

This should be a tiny blip on our cultural radar. I was very dismayed that CBC Music was launched in harmony with this event, I suspect they wanted something big to talk about. Oh ya. I loved Dave Grohl's acceptance speech last night, too. He was pretty passionate about it. Sounded very Neil Youngish and Dave Briggsish. Focus on musicianship and writing songs and not so much the fancy computer tools to try and make things sound perfect.

When I watch something like the Grammy's I expect to hate most of it, be bored alot, shocked once in a while. and just basically wait for the few good moments and parts that I like.

It's got some glitches still, that's why there are a fair number of us still hanging out here. The plan is that this site will go away in a week or two. I hope it's once they have some things fixed up on the new site

I honestly like the look of the new site better, but comments don't update on their own right now

have to say - I just watched some clips after but with all i've seen on the internet - did noone recognize Joe Walsh because he actually looks healthy or did just noone care? I thought he looked like he was having a great time. one of my fav moments was him dancing along to Glen Campbell in the front rown.

also during Glen Campbell I just kept wishing Jim Cuddy was there but Blake Shelton's voice fit well for that. i dont listen to his own stuff but he's funny & harmless.

@lisa - hehe. ok, missy. I like him just fine. His mainstream country is not my cup of tea but it doesn't make me want to pull my hair out, which is what I mostly meant by harmless.

i followed the Voice a bit last season, partly because he was so hilarious. but there are worse compliments than funny & harmless. he's tall. does that help? he's very good at being tall....

your opinions and points are valid and heard...i just hope you back it up by never supporting either shallow, glitzy, people eating industry by purchasing/listening to/renting/enjoying any article manufactured by said industries!

imho, the grammys have been around for a long time and they're not going anywhere soon. it's alot of "wtf" but you take it all with a grain of salt because it is what it is.

if you look through the list of winners from last night you can see that they are not all just the "flavour of the month"...(the foo fighters, adele, taylor swift, chick corea, levon helm, bon iver, lady antebellum, allison kraus, booker t jones, betty white, etc)...some have multiple albums over the last 4 years, others over the last 18+ years.

if there is one thing i think we can all take solace in it's that, last night, some true musical talent was honoured. a strong voice (adele), a talented band that recorded an album on tape (foo fighters), an incredible songwriter (bon iver), a young star that's not all trashed out (taylor swift),...the list goes on.

and as far as "honouring an artist who they pillaried while they were acting out their addictions that life in that industry likely contributed to"....that's present in every industry (lawyers, doctors, bankers, service industry, trades, agriculture, athletes, etc). it's just more noticeable because of the "spotlight".

Yes, addictions are present in every aspect of life, but it is the hypocrisy that is under that "spotlight".

Support the artists you love who create art that inspires you and gives you joy. That really has very little to do with what happens on awards shows. That is industry, not art.

I really appreciate you addressing my comment, sban. I think it is important to think about how and why we think the way we think :)

not sure if you're joking or not...but i believe we have more power than just our money and how we spend it. our words and our actions are how we show support in what we believe in.

hypocrisy...i didnt see hear or see anyone on the grammys last night boasting about the sqeaky clean image and fine etiquette of the industry. everyone knows it's full of debauchery and nastiness...but is it really the time to bring it up when you're trying to honour the life of a friend you just lost?

i agree..."support the artists you love who create art that inspires you and gives you joy."

i also believe it's just as important for those artists to recieve suport and recognition for their art from their peers and others in the industry in the form of a piece of art (an award)...

and that, to me, is what awards shows are all about...all the way from the bucky's to the grammys...

@thebeav I may or may not be able to answer that for you. I wouldn't worry about that because Radio3 is still broadcasting purely 100% canadian content. CBC radio has always had alternative stations on Radio 2 or whatever where they've played a little American content, but yea, as I just heard from one of craig's earlier podcasts today, he said they're still doing 100% on R3.
