re: Canadian pubs in Europe

I watched the Stanley Cup finals at a Canadian pub in Paris in '08, the year Detroit beat Pittsburgh. It was so fun jumping on the Metro and going down there each game night and taking in the game with a bunch of Canadian ex-pats and some other mixed bag of charachters... the games were on pretty late there so the pub would shut down earlier and then re-open for the game until it would be over at about 5 or 6 am. It's a good thing my Metro stop was the last one on that line because I fell asleep on the train a couple times in the morning on my way home!!

@flannel tom #33, yeah the mainland European version of ESPN America carries HNIC but we in the UK share our channel with Scandinavia (for some reason) and the company handling the NHL rights sold them up there for a large amount of money, so because ESPN-A could not show the games a small channel called premier bought the rights.  But I refuse to give them my money.

I have been thinking that I would like to open a British pub in Canada and a Canadian pub in Britain.

@GarfieldUK: I would love to have a pub within walking distance of my house. The nearest requires a drive, and it sucks.

I would also love to visit the Canadian one in Britain, as long as it wasn't showing hockey at that time (or it was the Women's Olympic Team or something well-played). Obviously I would be driking a local brew there, also. "When in Ratae Corieltauvorum…" and all that.

Do you know what the worst thing is? Getting a call right before you leave the office on a Friday afternoon about a massive project that needs to be organized in less than a week, especially when you are going to be out of town most of that week.

@lisa - awesome.  thanks!!! i kinda figured you wouldn't. it's still an awesome song. sung by the super talented & frequently unintelligible Bob Hallett. (i've heard Alan Doyle say that sometime he has trouble with Bob's accent). i have a soft spot for them, as they were the first Canuck band I saw in Chicago. they were always kind about playing there & had great crowds. & um...stayed at my hotel. 

Garf -- will you be able to ship real ale to your pub in Canada?  Please?

all this pub talk. there's good bars here, particular a good selection of craft brews but I have yet to find anything really like a good Brit pub (or even Canadian) except the cheesy one in Santa Monica.

i could really go for some fish & chips. must be because it's the first Friday of Lent.

Garf, omg! I used to watch that tv show Location Location Location...for hours and hours. I was so addicted! A real estate show based in the UK. Just so I could see all the cool, old, UK buildings and landscapes, etc. The odd castle here and there, too. A few pubs...etc.

That's one thing we don't have here. Everything is new, new, new. Mostly. In Vancouver, that is.

@Lumina93, Witton got it's name because the miners would live here and travel to the mines in the neighbouring villages.  Because ther was no coal mines there was no coal dust so the village stayed clean and got the name White Town.  Over time it got shortened to Witton.

what is it with you Vancouver people? the Fearing fella looked at me as if i was telling him Martians were landing the first time i tried to start a Wings/Canucks fight during the play-offs. he went to his first game in Nashville about 7 years ago. 

@flagpole - Yeah, getting better all the time.  It was surgery without a knife, just an "invasion", so more sore than anything.  Have Vicodin, but I don't think I need it any more.  Not really in pain, just sort of ache.

As for the Vancouver people - some of the best folks I've ever met.  And Lisa is one of my favourites!

Lee -- so you're just going to stop taking the Vicodin because you aren't in as much pain anymore? Really?

Right: over to Radio1 for me. Don't anyone break Radio3 before I return next week.

Yes, I certainly would not have known and I nor anyone I know, knew of this place.

Pretty effn small. You walk through the front door and you could literally trip over mic cords and the lot. Stage was puny and only the drum kit fit with the bassist barely. Menno and Nixon had to play in front of it. 

Crowd was all young, lots of silly girls being loud. I think I was the only one that really knew who they were. I went back to buy a shirt and they seemed almost shocked. Very nice guys, Menno shook my hand and I spoke with him an Nixon for around 10 minutes before they went on. I sat on the end of a sofa no futher than 5 feet from them during the set. Yes, I was pretty much deaf when I got home, OK now. It's a real treat when you get an such a personal experience because they look at you like your the only one that knows what they're about. I wanted to shake a couple of people during the set and tell them to shut up and appreciate the best band that will ever grace that little hole. Ripping good time!

Ooops -- the dog just sat on my foot (he weighs 85 lbs, so you notice when he does that).  This is his way of saying that he wants to go for a walk RIGHT NOW DAMMIT, so I better go.

She is ultimately interrupted by a fellow passenger who feels the SkyTrain may not be the most appropriate place for an impromptu strip show. (Skip to 2:40 for the yelling.)



oh goody. the grocery store hasnt realized that Downton is over. they still had 'digestive biscuits' on sale. too bad they didn't include the rasberry Pims.I had salad with kale in for lunch so i'm allowed to have a little afternoon snack. right? 

@garfy - i really don't have a huge sweet tooth but I love Brit 'biscuits' because they're not super sweet. well, the Pims are but I have those about once every 5 years so I have no guilt there.I suppose I have Tim Curry & Alex Kingston & all that lot who shop t Gelsons for my access to Brit cookies, eh?

@musicjoy.  i'm a recent LA transplant. there is a good music scene & i'm close to Silver Lake. THat's where Dan Mangan played back in September. we've had so many good Canuck bands, I haven't really explored the local scene too much. I will check out Electric Flower tho.

i'm in Hollywood but right on the border with the Los Feliz neighborhood. sorta hipster but not as much as Silver Lake. i like it here. i sure like the weather. People are way friendlier than I expected & it's pretty easy going.

This is in reference to a brief mention of latin american food.  Everybody should try something called a pupusa which is a Salvadorean food.  DELICIOUS is all I can say...

yeah. it's kinda health food crazy here. there's a lot of juice detox places.  the acai is pretty big all over the US tho. it was in Chicago too. haven't seen the coconut milk latte despite going daily to a pretty hipster coffee shop. but i'll bet i could find one.

i'm pretty basic & old school on coffee. i don't even like flavoured. or even mocha particularly. i ask that you please don't burn the beans (Starbucks) & that it be a decent strength. & i throw in some half & half. or i do latte's.

but there's sure a lot of kale on menus out here. & if you get a burger without a bun they'll automatically wrap in lettuce some description (usually butter/Boston) . it's easy to eat healthy. & year round farmers markets. *love*

@musicjoy - so you're talking about Pickathon? i'd like to do that fest sometime. my hope for this summer is actually Vancouver tho.  so i'll bring you & Lisa some brownies. & maybe Grant. if he behaves. i have had no complaints so far. they're not fancy (well, they do have some melty chunks of chip in) but they are good stable road food for bands. & i make them with apple sauce instead of oil so they're healthy. don't tell the boys.

I guess we don't get much summer, we tend to go a bit nuts in the few short months that it's lovely and summery out.
