In this age of social networking, face to face contact has taken a bit of a back seat. Or at least that’s what we’re told. I don’t actually think that our friends on Facebook have really replaced anything, more that they've added another layer to the social experience. Still, it’s always nice to see that people enjoy getting together.

And one way that I enjoy my friends is through our monthly book club. Maybe it’s the focus, or the wine… what ever – it is a truly fun way to get something useful done and well, eat snacks and drink wine.

On today’s show I’m joined by Zach Mycula, drummer for the Toronto band Topanga. Not only do these guys get together to practice and play, but they also meet weekly for a weekly Record Club, which is a great idea.

They post the album up for discussion on their tumblr site, so you could play along at home, too. Here's the gist:

"The four of us have this tradition we call “Record Club”. It’s like a book club, but with music. Every Sunday one band member picks a record for the rest of us to listen to. It’s a pretty sweet excuse for us to hang out together, drink beer, and talk about our favourite bands."

I’ll talk to Zach about the club, and touring stories at other types of clubs. But before then:

I was delighted to have a "flesh encounter" [ ::cough:: ] with @Lisa at a CBC Vancouver Radio event in December. It was more special than hearing her say my name on R3 or respond to a Tweet (although those also rawks). Meeting a person with whom you've corresponded for some time is possible more fun now becuase you get to match the voice / accent / physical traits of the individual to the aspects of the person with which you are already aware.

But I don't get out of the house much, so maybe I'm not average.

Part of a wine club where every Thursday we get together and drink a different kind of wine. It's mostly just an excuse for us to get together and drink, but hey, it works.

I guess what I was trying to say up there about "real life" was that I don't belong to actual clubs, but the occasional events which occur that bring together R3 or Vancouver Radio1 listeners feel like a club meeting, as we're all there for the same reason: to celebrate the Mother Corp's particular content of choice.

ugh, can I log a bug? I think this was a problem on the old site as well but if the uri to the page changes as I'm typing a comment (such as the show title being tweeked) it's a catastrophic page failure when I hit the "post" button I assume because it's trying to send data to what is now a dead link. Can they throw it on their backlog to make it fail a little more gracefully so I can at least recover the comment I've written? If it'd be more helpful I can email this in.

I'm on the Board of Directors for Cloudscape comics. We meet once a week and make comic book anthologies/ talk about comics/ draw/ etc. I'm their treasurer. It's a lot of fun.

Anyways, I was asking if there were clubs outside university? By the sounds of it yes but the closest I belong to is the YVR3 like Kirk although I think CMac is going to revoke my membership if I don't start getting out to shows more often. I could use a nerd gaming club (just things like Risk & Settlers) as I almost never get to play my board games that aren't Things or Apples to Apples.

don't belong to any clubs! I like to read so I guess I could join a book club, only problem is that my tastes in books is not that mainstream. I was surprised though that a book I read a couple of weeks ago, written by someone from the belgian socialist/communist party, has become a bestseller (already 3 weeks on number one in sales of non-fiction books) :lol:

Atheist Meetup explanation: People are so in your face about religion here in Texas, and it pervades pretty much everything you do, so many of us athiests done here feel like we need to have a group/place where we can get together to de-tox, to be with like-minded people and to rant when we need to. It's a great group of people, always a good way to meet new folks or to hang out with old friends.

We have a record club in Victoria! It was started by a local radio DJ. Once a month about 10 regulars meet somewhere to listen to and talk about music. Everyone brings a record and picks a couple tracks from it to be played. We've had bbqs, a cheesy record gift exchange at Christmas, and even had a celebrity appearance in the form of Mr. Grant Lawrence. Its a lot of fun and a great way to meet people to go to shows with, I highly recommend joining/starting one of your own!

officially? I'm a member of a tai chi club.

I'm also a member of the permaculture research institute of saskatchewan (permasask.ca), I'm a scout leaver (beavers, actually), I'm a member of the sask environmental society, I was involved in Rooted, a university-based group related to reducing our ecological footprint, I'm a member of the unitarian congregation of saskatoon, I'm a member of a CSA (community-supported agriculture) group, so my meat, eggs and a fair bit of my veggies come from a farm.

That's about it, I think. So, only one "club" but lots of other stuff

Once every 2 weeks myself and two other friends get together and spend the evening listening to records and drinking a selection of beers we have made or recently found. We have dubbed these get togethers Vinyl Taps due to the main point of it being the listening of records and beer drinking. Like most good clubs its just a excuse to drink beer.

I was in the Improv club in high school!

I got to meet the guys in Topanga when they opened for Hollerado in Ottawa last December. They're all a bunch of super nice guys. Can't wait for them to come back to town!

We actually shudder at/shy away from the "club" label, but I am a member of a 112-year-old organization for professional writers. Female journalists and literary writers founded it in Detroit in 1900; it was known as the Detroit Women Writers' Club once upon a time. Today we are Detroit Working Writers.

An absolutely amazing, talented group of women AND men. Former/current members include Joyce Carol Oates, Judith Guest and Ruth Ryan Langan.

I participate in a group who endeavour to call notice to large scale inequities and injustices throughout society, the systemic and intersectional issues that cause these, and through community participation, better unpack and understand these issues. These are building blocks to change (hopefully!).

Using the label 'club' would be rather diminutive to use for those who Occupy....which is an interesting word, with a very dark history. See Poland in September of '39 for example...

Our government wants to Occupy your online identity without judicial oversight. The Minister of Public Safety who introduced bill C-30 which would allow for this, claims ignorance of this fact. Is he really this stupid? Or was the Conservative Party hoping Canadians were that stupid? Large numbers are showing otherwise in the digital universe, as the backlash against the Online Spying bill continues. Lets bring some noise to the ground for this. If you're in the Vancouver/Richmond area, come out to this today. Signmaking at the Atrium of Woodwards at 3. If you're elsewhere, I've been hearing about groups occupying Conservative MP's constituency offices over various measures they are aiming to push through with limited debate (C-10, the omnibus crime bill; C-11, Canada's equivalent to SOPA/PIPA; C-30, the Online Spying Bill). Check those efforts out (or spearhead them!)

@zoot aloors: the spelling of "Whiskey" or "Whisky" depends (for me) on the source of said liquid. If from Ireland, Scotland, or Celtic lands, it's got the "e". Any other location's output doesn't.

As for the novel, I always base my editing and proofing on the location of the story's characters, then on the location of the author. Thus, if it's the holiday at the start of September being celebrated by an America-living character, it's "Labor Day". However, a non-specific setting for a tale written by an English author would have someone talk about the "colour" of their tie. It's complicated, but the ultimate goal is to reflect the feel of the story and author as faithfully as possible.

In the case of the novel I'm editing now, it's in a distopian country which is never named but really seems like the Easter Seaboard of the USA. The author's UK vocabulary gets changed occasionally — torch = flashlight, pavement = sidewalk, etc. — and much of the spelling gets set in the fence-located Canadian English which has a tendency to British English with spellings, but gramatically simpler turns of phrase.

So, there's an answer that is likely far longer than you expected. I apologisze for that.

Was sad to miss Foam Lake last night at the Railway Club, last night! A band I like alot more than many trendy bands of the moment. Listening yesterday, I thought that maybe they have more of a rock element than alot of bands that are popular right now. (Which tend to seem more poppy to me.)

Zoot, Boders: it was a great luncheon. I had a seat way in the back (with the cheap seats/partner orgs) but he was a good speaker. I didn't get to meet him or Mayor Parker, but I did get to talk with the head of Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept and the head of the Houston Parks Dept, along with a bunch of other organizations so it was good! Learned some good info about the work to create a new National Recreation Area near here, plus the food was amazing!

A gaggle of my girlfriends formed a club, a rock painting club. As with your book club , Lisa, it may have revolved around food, wine, and chit chat, as many weeks we did not even get our paintbrushes wet. But other meetings we were very productive and creative. musicjoy, I saw them when they came through Ottawa last Spring or so, backing up Shuyler Jansen, and truth be told, I enjoyed their set a lot more than his. They indeed do rock, and their cohesiveness is very impressive: tight as hell.

Oh damn! Benoit, thanks for the feedback. I had that with Deep Dark Woods, too. I knew I LOVED their music, but kept on missing their shows. For years, even. I saw them once, but their set was so late, I could only catch a few songs before running off to catch the latest transit home.

Same with Elliot Brood, for years, before finally seeing them play live.

Having them play at the Railway Club like that, felt like a pretty nice opportunity to catch a band I think is especially good. But, I was so snotty yesterday...

I'm in no official club, for sure. I think I've rarely been in clubs, actually.

But, informally, ya....I do tend to hang out in socially and musically...in 'little' informal circles. With certain common values, I think. It makes it easier to relate, I think. Sharing those values. Even it's never really (mostly formally) talked about...

Maybe you can just mostly 'sense' it...

Almost like a recognition...

OMG! A Lego Club! I wanna join! I have the fondest memories of building fantastic and lit up lego villages, as a child. With my family, often in our pajamas. In the kitchen. We'd turn off all the regular lights when they were finished and just marvel at what we had constructed! (With little, mini-lights inside the lego buildings.)

@carrieg, for christams one year I got a LEGO train set and a technics car with moving parts.

Christmas morning my Mum sat and built the train, in the afternoon she built the car and her boyfriend played with the train and my Mum started on the car. Dinner was late but I got to see whatever I wanted to watch on TV.

I belong to two running clubs, but my favourite club is a 'pajama movie night' club. I've had 2 girlfriends come to my house - in their pj's for the past 10 years...about once a month or so. Started when I got divorced - guess they felt I'd never leave the house again so they come to my place. It's usually just a girl catch-up, but the best time, gossip, eat, drink...and rarely watch the movie.

Redbird are so great! First time I heard them was at the Red Room opening for Sun Wizard and Yukon Blonde. I was sooo impressed. Plus, I love that one of their guitarists is also in Portage and Main.

I had a friend who once suggested a dressup and pizza and girls night as a theme for getogethers. Dress up in gowns with pretend tiaras and fancy gloves, order pizza, yak and bitch like 'girls' (or whatever) and ya know...

(Which I thought and still think would make for a GREAT mini-film or video.)

@Musicjoy/carrieg - i don't have anything like that going but a friend of mine kept talking about having a night out bowling or something silly wearing wedding dresses (she liked hers so much she wanted to wear it more than once). It would look pretty epic, not sure from the divorced pov but at least then you might not care about the possible pizza sauce spillage!

@mj3 - We've seen them live twice and were present for some of the recording of Soon This Will All Be Gone (N2D article in April). Incredible sound, amazing energy and super nice people. Their live performance is stunning.
