Taken in 2009 with Suckamc/Martin Cathrae who was visiting from PEI. We were up at one of our local foothill wineries, just after a somewhat unusual snowfall dropped about 15" of the white stuff on the ground at the winery.  The wood stove was nice and hot in the tasting room, but the red wines were a tad bit cooler than they should have been for optimal flavour!

Best: Coats: Pea Coat, fo sure. Great on girls and guys. Boots: Blundstones. I know, hipster wear... blah blah. But they are actually really durable and worth the penny dropped on them and keep your feet dry! 

Worst: Yes, uggs... but it depends on how they're worn. Outside of the pants (when the pants are pj pants, ESPECIALLY!!!!) they look stupid. Inside worn like a normal person they aren't SOOO horrible.

Without Feathers? I've never actually heard that album in its entirety. I remember when the Stills came to play at the Biltmore years ago. They might've been one of the very first bands to play there after it was renovated. They were trying out their songs and material for that album. It was a brilliant, brilliant show!

The North Face! That's the co. logo I kept on seeing everywhere one winter! Not only on Kitsilano sporty types, but just plain ole 'everybody' on buses, etc. I was intrigued.

Surprisingly, it was none other than my Dad who clued me into what that logo probably refers to. In terms of mountain climbing and the co. theme, etc.

I just went to The Quebec Winter Carnaval, where people unabashedly dress for the weather. Lots of toques, fur hats, goosedown coats and 99% of the people in snowpants. And the beloved arrowhead sashes were sported everywhere. I got one, but I don't think I'll be able to pull it off as a sash here in NB, so I'll keep it around my neck. Best winter carnival fashion accessory- the Caribou cane :)

the few women I've talked to about Uggs say that they're breathable (many of them are wool lined) and so they don't get as hot indoors as other boots

I guess I am a big fan of summer wear and tons of cotton. Not the biggest fan of wearing wool, heavy sweaters, tights, etc. I remember being a kid and just hating wearing tights!* They were often so, so itchy. It's weird cuz I recently found out that can be a trait of strong visual spatial types. High sensitivity to materials, etc.

(*To the point I tended to hate the approaching of Winter as I associated it with wearing itchy, uncomfortable clothes.)

One thing I love. I first saw them in northern India. Those hand made slipper boots (with nice designs) that are now sold in trendy stores like Banana Republic. They're so comfy, only I don't always remember to wear them.

Ha ha. My use of the English language is pretty bad sometimes! (Especially on the internet.) Ya, when I wrote that I thought "I think this is wrong and not a word!" I'm kindof rushing, too. Shouldn't be even on this blog right now.

I have a very, very, very un-PC thing to admit, winter clothes wise. I don't even know if I should! Ahem. One winter I went out East to a very, very cold city in Canada. I did not want to be cold, was pregnant, and didn't have much $. I went to a second hand store and bought a cheap fur coat for $10. I felt a bit guilty, but not that much. I only wore it for a little while. It was very, very cold there, tho. I wasn't used to it, at that time!

Puffy coats are not very useful in Vancouver, but they are if you are going to do any alpine climbing or hiking! Might not be snow down in the city, but it sure is up there.

NOW I AM JONESING A BUTTER TART.

I work for a retailer who sells Canada Goose.  We get people trying to order these coats from all over the world from places like Texas, Florida and other verm warm climates.  The demand for these coats is through the roof, but the great thing is that they are still Canadian made!

TheRadiohead made Nanaimo Bars at Home County last year and they were so delicious!  Couldn't eat too many of them, but they were great.

I agree! I'm not a big fan of nanaimo bars, myself. However, I worked at a bakery that made really, really good ones! They were pretty cocounutty and not too sweet and quite, surprisingly delicious. So big fans of Nanaimo bars were constantly coming in to the bakery and we'd have discussions on them. I had never known before that, that they were actually 'invented' in Nanaimo! Made for great, little conversations and chats with customers.

As you pointed out, both wine and raisins are made from grapes. However, wine is made from the juice of the grape, where as raisins are what is left when you take all the good stuff (wine) out of the grape. They are the leftovers. They are like eating the cracked shells of the barley after the good stuff has been turned into beer.

Raisins are a way to preserve the goodness of grapes. Dried fruit is a great way to keep fruit around for seasons when they are not available.

We forget that in our spoiled, consume-everything-NOW! world, but, historically, it was a way to preserve things.

and probably will be used much more again as the oil runs out and we can't afford massive refigerators and shipping of fruits all over the world like happens now.

Ever wonder where ice wine comes from?  Grapes that are allowed to naturally lose their mosture - i.e. becoming raisins - and then are pressed when frozen.  And you dis raisins so.

Here in California, we have late harvest wines, where the grapes are harvested, then spread out on the ground to become raisins.  They are then pressed with the intensified flavours - and intensified sugars - to make a very sweet after dinner wine.

I saw a different thing about meat, where unsrupulous meat packers take off cuts (of good cuts of meat) and, instead of grinding them, they dust them with this enzyme and roll them up. the enzyme works like a glue to stick the meat back together into what seems to be a single chunk

Then the sell these as premium cuts instead of ground beef.

the big downside is that these cut ends have been sitting, exposed to air, and it's all factory beef, so the risk of e.coli is high, and the exposted edges have now been shmushed into the center of what a consumer thinks is a solid steak.

so they cook it medium or medium rare, like a good stead should be, not heating the middle to the required temparature because they didn't know the middle was actually exposes to air and cutting tables and knives and stuff.

I get annoyed when I see people here in Houston all dressed up for winter in their coats, scarves, mittens, hats and boots when it is 10 degrees C out.

Drive down Richmond St (in London) by the strip of douche bar lineups in the dead of winter and have a gander at what constitutes "winter wear" to the people waiting to go in to the bar, get wasted and hook up.

It's pretty much a display of all that is wrong with humans. But especially our inability to think practically vs. what others will think about us.

I'm totally guilty of overdressing for the weather. I frequently walk 20 minutes to school. I leave the house in longsleeves, sweatshirt and winter coat. After 10 minutes I'm usually dying of heat and have to unbutton and unzip everything.

I blame living in a poorly insulated house and feeling cold all the time. 

Winter spring summer and fall.. baggy assed track pants.

I hate tripping on people's block heater cords stretched over the sidewalk....in plus 10 weather.

What else are people with baggy asses to wear though? 

or what about those people that have remote car starters on loud diesel trucks (that live in a city) and run it 3 cycles at 6am, when its +10C outside!

I just bought some Canada Goose down mitts, and the whole back of the package talks about how the mitts are not made in Canada, but that they'd love for them to be, and if you know of any Canadian manufacturers who could help them out to let them know. China is pretty darn good at ripping stuff off, though!

Grant: Long underwear is jus pants that are tight, as long as you wear regular underwear underneath them.  Just air them out with your goalie gear and you will be fine.

Once you get down to -15 or so, gloves just aren't going to cut it. Mittens let your fingers keep each other cozy, and they're also easier to layer.

Speaking of cozy fingers, my sister Vanessa said her friend has a pair of mittens that allow her and her boyfriend to hold hands while they're walking. So corny it's adorable!

As long as you never take it off, it's still clean.

we had our entire winter in one week, a couple weeks ago. it got down to minus 12, i think.

it was horrible.

My son has a down coat and when he wears it, I just want to hug him all the time. He's like a big fluffy pillow.

It's a different kind of cold in Vancouver because of the damp. The weather is warmer but it's harder to get/stay warm, in my experience. 

Or as my dad (who hates the west coast climate) says, "it gets in your bones!"

You'd be surprised how much "Made in Canada" stuff is not. First of all the rule is that it has to be 50% assembled in Canada, so even if you just have partly assembled elements made in China, and then shipped over to finish the job, by law it's "Made in Canada"

And eve then, it easy to fake, because no one is keeping tabs on it.

I used to work for a uniform company that established itself as being 100% made in Canada. When I got there it was only the pants that we made. All the shirts etc. were shipped in, but the customer didn't know that. After about a year, all the pants were being made in China, the labels being torn out and replaced with "Made in Canada" and I was one of only two emloyees left. I reported them, but nothing ever came of it.

True story.

Oh, you'd have loved that class!  But in 1972, times were changing.  One of the skills they tried to teach us was to look at projected stereoscopic photos and to train our eyes to individually focus on each half of the slide, by letting out eyes essentially cross and and not come into focus at where the vision came together, but allow it to cross to focus on the screen.  We were told to hold up a pencil and focus on it, then let our eyes' vision go past the pencil to the screen, and you could suddenly see in 3D stereo. 

Well, it was the end of the lecture, and the very last photo to put up on the screen was that of a nude woman.  Now here was something to focus on!  I was concentrating hard, and just as I locked into the 3D stereo, the instructor shut off the projector saying, "We really can't show that slide any more!  There are women in the program now."  As I said, times were changing.  Today, that would be grounds for a sexual harrassment charge!

I remember listening to this on the local station, just about every morning before high school!

Pretty early: 7:30, sun rising.

I still use stereo figures!   Reading these things crosseyed (actually, its wall-eyed) gives me headaches!

There was/is a roller hockey company out of the US named Tour that tried to break through into the ice hockey market and when they did the rebreanded themselves to "Tour Cdn". Not becuase they were a Canadian company or even were manufactured in Canada, but because the repuation in hockey is that Canada is hockey so they used the Cdn to have people presume these things.

The irony of course is that all the Canadian hockey brands they were looking to compete with and harness an association with by adding that, were all being made offshore. Just like they were. In fact the only skates that are made in Canada, for these Canadian brands, are the ones that pros have custom made, and we mortals can never purchase off the shelf.

Made in Canada is more of a theme then it is a truism. Should be "Made to look like its from Canada".

yep, thats right!  I think one is supposed to make the figures cross-eyed if they are projected on a screen, but wall-eyed if on paper. I cant remember, i just avoid them when possible, or use the stereogram viewer to avoid the headaches.

Good afternoon Canada! Winter has finally arrived here in Belgium this week: between 0° and  -2° C on Monday, between -2 and -4° Tuesday, between -2 and -5° yesterday, today between -3 and -7°. Been wearing 2 jeans + 2 t-shirt, a shirt, 1 thin cardigan, 2 thicker woolen cardigans and leather jacket with wool on the inside. and sneakers with wool inside. 8-) only my fingers suffer, since it's not possible to smoke, read in book, hold anything at all with my big woolen gloves :-p

sonuvabitch, I bought my Grafs a couple of years ago because the local sports shop fellow told me they were made in Canada.  It doesn't seem quite fair to me to charge $600 for skates, claiming they are made here when they aren't.  Time to get out my ink well and write a nastly letter...

....and you see these little startup companies with all the best intentions, go onto shows like 'dragons den', then the investors immediatley pounce on them to manufacture in china/asia whatever and mass market the crap out of the product.

as long as its legal, and easy to do this, the corporation will do it.   If you want things made in canada, we have to (1) pressure government to make policies that support this.... and (2) be ready to pay the proper price for items.

Yeah Dodger Stadium is just above Echo Park.  Like up a hill.  I think it's the closest actual neighborhood to the stadium.  Unless you count the LAPD Police Academy as a neighborhood.

1) I find it awful that the biggest band out of Ireland is U2 (a la people associated Nickelback with Canada - however Nickelback is worse)2) WHY does he wear sunglasses all the time?! Something to consider, most skates these days are made to ne heat fit to your foot when you buy them. I'm assuming the big expensive place does this? If you buy from elsewhere you likely won't be able to get yours heat fit.

Bauers, which have always been great skates (I had Vapor 40's before these), apparently got the designer from CCM who created the CL's that I have and Ovi made famous — the same ones everyone calls CCM Vapors facetiously.

And the new high end Bauer Vapors are insanely light. Like feather light.
