a "dead by" stamp on your promos.  In the "old days" the carts would have a big sticker on them that would have a "do not play on" date.  Can't there be an expiration date on the promos in the computer that would drop them out automatically as of a certain date?  Isn't that what computers do so well?  This error crops up on R3 all the time.

HOW did you get into CBC radio and doing that 'gig'? (Gig being a completely inappropriate word in this case. Judging by the impact you've had on Canadian music and radio and the indie scene, etc. Seems like you've become quite a strong 'force'.)

If you're equipment reeks it is because you don't take care of it and allow it to completely dry between playing.

And the trick to killing the bacteria, as told to me by an NHL trainer is every so often spraying it down with Lysoll. But most importantly letting it dry and not peeing in it like Grant does. Repeatedly.

Hi everybody, I've been working like a demon the past few weeks, so it's great to be on the blog with all of you today!

I thought that was a weasel.

Huh? I love the cast from "My Name Is Earl"!

This isn't a question but a comment. And I don't really know how to put this properly into words.

But, since it's a Grant Lawrence topic day, here....

Almost a decade ago, I spent two very full years volunteering at a little radio station. Often assisting the music director, there, and co-hosting a bi-monthly show with him...very indie. He was such an expert on everything indie at the time. Whether it was music labels, people who worked at them, etc. Every once in a while he would mention the name Grant Lawrence at CBC. (There was a woman, too. i don't think she's at CBC radio anymore, tho.) I always got the impression that Grant was like an Emperor of indie music and to be absolutely revered!

So, I gotta say I was a bit shocked finally meeting Grant (which was initially about the book, Adventures in Solitude) and then later at last year's CBC Open House and Food Bank Day and event. I had just assumed cuz it was CBC, Grant would be someone very serious and intimidating. That I would be all nervous to talk to, etc. So, it's been SUCH a nice suprise that Grant, you are the opposite! Very spontaneous, natural, funny and down to earth. Even a bit self effacing, at times. 

(Ok, sorry I changed tenses there in all that explanation.)

We can't let that happen. We need to reframe the dialogue. We know the CBC is not just relevant but intrinsic to the Canadian identity and consciousness. How can we ensure it has adequate funding so it can do more of what it does so well and drop the profit-grabbing endeavours it currently engages in to stay alive.

Anyone read the Artist's Way? It was very popular years ago. In it, she talks about 'shadow artists'. People who are artistic and have some art form they've practiced or whatever. But, they lack confidence in themselves and their art. So this type of person often ends up supporting another artist or artists that they believe in more. I soooo see myself that way!!! Whenever I've interacted with musicians, mostly in interviews and such, it's been taking the 'side' of the musician or artist. Trying to understand what that's like. Not as a cold hearted business person and shark who only wants money and profit.

what traits do you look for in a young goalie?

I'm coaching my sons middle school hockey team and we will need a new goalie next year at high school level. It's the most important position on the team, yet some kids get into it because they aren't good skaters. I'm thinking maybe I'll find a kid that skates and see if he takes to the goalie position. What kind of personality am I looking for?, and lean and mean, mean and big, what physical attributes?

I still think Unibroue's "Terrible" is the least terrible beer I've had in a long long time. Delicious.

The Alibi Room in Vancouver serves it...I have had it a few places before. So good.

Uhh, who said anything about "getting hitched"?  I was referring to using dating sites.

Besides, I'm not sure a BC marriage is even recognized in California...

Goalies usually are good skaters, but not necessarily the fastest, best skater on the team. They just need to be strong on their skates.

The thing I would look for is reflexes.

The rest of the stuff like angles and style that suits their physical makeup can all be taught. Reflexes and game vision (anticipating how the play will develop) is something you kinda have to have. And the best goalies do.

The rest is just getting in the way of the puck and the net…

2. toss a pencil or two at the kid

Also, I played floor hockey for a few years and while it was a beer league so not too serious I found the best goalies to play with as a defense person was someone with, as John says, "game vision". I was a better player because the goalie could give me direction.

If you didn't know that Lee is coming to Vancouver and will be on the Radio with Grant on Monday, then Grant isn't doing a grand enough job with the countdown to Lee in the CBC (again)

I disagree! About the dumbness. It's just the opposite.

I personally think it takes someone with an uncanny and unusual ability to stay calm and focused no matter what. Almost a zen like quality. Watching a good goalie is almost like art...in my opinion.

I think alot of people judge and misunderstand goalies and underestimate the great skill it takes to be good at it.

For the goalie thing that's all great advice, however;

I have to replace a kid (already on the JV HS team which i also help coach) who want's to play,his hearts in the right place, but he may have ADHD and his save percentage is below 50%. some times the other kids say things like I'm going to kick your ass because you suck (this was during a game), or last night at practice someone (who will be repremanded) said you suck balls and we don't want you playing with us. Also, I think the kid get's a little rattled after 4-5 goals go in so i think I need someone who's mean and imperturbable, marked by extreme calm, like some of those bad guys in the movies.

Speaking of who's nice and who's an um a-hole in music, I'd like to say that in my opinion and experience...not that anyone's asking, but...

I was so surprised, years ago. I got to meet or talk to quite a few famous and admirable musicians (international, too) and they were ALWAYS nice, polite, kind, down to earth, intelligent, even often humble. I talked to tons of music biz people, too, whether managers, A&R people, publicists, etc. They were always nice, too.

The only people I found sometimes rude, snotty, arrogant, full of themselves, unfriendly, snobby...the odd local musicians who weren't really 'anybody' but thought they were or really wanted to be. This always greatly suprised me. It was the opposite of what I expected.

There's tons of super nice, local musicians nowadays, tho.

If someone has the courage to step in between the pipes to play the most important position in hockey - the one that carries the most visitbility too - you should pat them on the back for doing so.

It's funny how nerdy 'things' can become hip. When I was a young kid, my parents got me to get correction shoes for fallen arches. They were black and white, clunky, oxford shoes. I wore them exactly one day to school and was soooo embarassed! (At least that's what I remember.) They were the height of nerdiness, in my mind. Geeky.

So, then my parents helped me die the shoes brown so that they wouldn't be so obvious and embarassing. 

Anyways, years later, tho most kids in my high school dressed pretty hippie in fashion, I suddenly got the urge to do more of a punk or mod style. Got those old, brown oxfords out and wore them proudly! As they were unique and kindof funky.

Hey Grant - Hipster Shmipster!  I've been wearing specs since 9th grade - a totally uncool time in my life :-( Over the years I've been compared to Nana Mouskouri, Baily Quarters from WKRP, and even Lisa Loeb - all cool ladies!!  I'm proud of my four eyed look, and wouldn't wear contacts or consider surgery for anything!  Go with your bad self!

Absolutely loved it. We spent 5 days there and it wasn't enough time. It's a beautiful city. So much to see and do. Very romantic. If you plan on going, make sure to learn some Spanish (I wish I knew more) and rent bikes.. it's the best way to see the city.

no, it's been tough but it's a rebuild year with only 2 returning players, all of the talent went up to the Varsity team. but the kids still have a lot of hustle and heart, next year will be different.

At nearly 30 years of age I just started to pick up piano playing. I've been at it since September last year, and I don't quite suck horribly. I am slowly learning to follow the sheet music and train my figers to do what I see. Whenever I finally get a tune right, I can feel the endorphins release from their hiding place.

New hobbies are happy hobbies.

Bring some Dramamine for your passengers on the coast highway.  You probably won't need it, but just in case.  Once you get north of Morrow Bay there's no way out until you reach Monterey and there are a zillion twists and turns.  Not as bad as the part North of SF though.
