'Tis the season of good will, jolliness and shining faces all aglow. To help with the latter we are happy to share eight original jazz cocktail recipes, created for CBC Music by singer/trumpeter/bartender Michael Louis Johnson. Please let us know how they turn out for you, once you wobble out from under that mistletoe. (Not that we suggest you get all lit up like a Christmas tree or anything! Enjoy in moderation, naturally.)
1. "Caravan," Duke Ellington.
The moon really does shine a little brighter after a ride on the caravan.
1 oz rye
1 oz amber rum (Bacardi or some other brand from Puerto Rico)
1 oz boiled water
1 small whisky glass or rock glass
Coat rim with ground cardamom.
2. "Body and Soul," Billie Holiday.
Smooth, full bodied, packs a kick and a tragic finish.
1 oz rye
3 oz stout (Guinness or Mill Street Cobblestone)
Angostura bitters
3 raisins
Large rocks, glass
Soak 3 raisins in 1 oz of rye 'til they become plump (or for as
long as you can stand it)
Mull (i.g. mash them up with a spoon or pestle)
Add 3 oz of your favourite stout
Float 3 dashes of angostura bitters.
3. "A Night in Tunisia," Dizzy Gillespie.
To fully appreciate, sip it halfway, then slam the scotch (the Charlie Parker break that changes everything); resume sipping.
1 oz Amaro Montenegro
1/2 oz Pernod
1 oz orange juice
Soda water
Lime
Raw sugar
Cardamom
Tall cocktail glass
Plus 1 oz scotch whisky.
Coat rim with blend of raw sugar and cardamom.
Shake vigorously over ice, the Montenegro, Pernod and juice.
Pour into glass.
Top with soda.
Garnish with slice of lime.
4. "Giant Steps," John Coltrane.
Starts clean and simple, grows in flavour and complexity to produce a cleansing of spirit.
2 oz quality silver tequila (Pepe Zeveda or Patron)
1/4 oz bourbon (Wild Turkey or Jim Beam)
1/2 tsp dried chili flakes
1 martini glass
Chill glass.
Gently stir tequila and chili flakes over ice.
Rinse glass with bourbon.
Strain tequila and chili flakes into glass.
Allow flakes to settle in bottom of glass.
Sip slowly.
5. "So What," Miles Davis.
Smooth and cool but with a salty modality. Don't turn your back on this one.
1 oz gin
2 oz cava (chilled)
1/4 oz bourbon
Kalamata olive
Martini glass
Chill glass.
Gently stir gin over ice.
Rinse glass with bourbon.
Strain gin into glass.
Add cava.
Garnish with olive (a.k.a. "the Cannonball").
6. "Mack the Knife," Ella Fitzgerald.
One shot makes you sing, two makes you forget the words; after three you start to scat.
1/3 oz vodka
1/3 oz Jägermeister
1/3 oz Slivovitz (or Sljivovica)
1 shot glass
Build in layers: vodka, then Jäger with Slivo on top.
Shoot.
7. "God Bless the Child," Eric Dolphy.
Meditate on the bubbles, as you are so blessed.
1 oz Frangelico
1 oz bourbon (Wild Turkey)
1 oz soda water
1 sugar cube
1 small whisky glass or rock glass
In the glass:
Soak sugar cube in 1/2 oz of Frangelico.
Add bourbon.
Add soda.
Float 1/2 oz Frangelico on top.
8. "Round Midnight," Thelonious Monk.
Twelve a.m., time to say "make mine a 'Round Midnight,' bartender, the darker the better."
2 oz Cognac
Dark chocolate (70% or more)
Snifter
Bite a small portion of chocolate.
Hold between cheek and gum.
Sip cognac and hold in mouth.
Spin 5 to 7 times.
Sit.
Swallow.
Repeat as necessary.
