Earlier this week, a music distribution warehouse in Northern London was destroyed by a fire that stemmed from rioting. The warehouse, owned by Sony Music, also served as one of the UK's largest distribution centres for approximately 150 independent music labels.
Ninja Tune is one of the labels who used the warehouse. That label is home to several Canadian artists including Poirier and Kid Koala. According to Ninja Tune's Jamie Collinson, Head of International, the label has lost approximately 100, 000 albums to the fire. Collinson said it's still not clear if insurance will cover his label's losses, but he's hopeful they will be compensated.
Many industry watchers have speculated that the fire could mean doom for some indie labels. "I haven't heard of anyone saying they're going out of business yet," Collinson says, "but it certainly is a risk when something like this happens."
