Hey folks. Hope all is well. My Album of the Week is the new self-titled album by the impromptu folk trio known as Daniel, Fred & Julie. In super great news, Daniel Romano joins me on the show today to tell us more about it.

The concept here is simple: Daniel Romano of Attack in Black discovers some books full of folk songs and decides to re-imagine them with new musical arrangements. He packs two acoustic guitars and heads to Sackville, NB to record these songs with Fred Squire of Shotgun & Jaybird and Calm Down It's Monday. They set up a single microphone in Fred's garage and hover around it with their guitars and voices, recording what they play. Because Fred and Julie Doiron were tight at the time, she's hanging around and adds a lovely harmony vocal to a bunch of public domain songs and a couple of Daniel originals. The result is an exquisitely raw field recording--a contemporary revival of ancient songs that rejuvenates the spirit that spawned them. It's folk music, pure and unadorned; Daniel, Fred & Julie is timeless and gorgeous (especially on vinyl).

Happy Wenzdee to Vish and everyone!

To answer your question no I haven't listened to Daniel, Fred & Julie as of yet, but I do like the concept and am a big fan of Julie Doiron so it is most likely only a matter of time before I do. So I got that to look forward to.

As for my album of the week I am actually picking two EP's King Diamond and The Phone Booth Outside the Video Store by Sleepless Nights. They are a great band that always put on a great show. Both EP's available for free download off their website.

I've heard about them a bit here on R3, and since I have a bit of a swoon crush on Julie, it intrigued me. Looking forward to hearing more, and ooooooo vinyl!

I haven't been listening to much newer music this past week, as I'm still working through all my purchases from last year. I also haven't gotten Heartland yet... So I pick The Deep Dark Woods - Winter Hours. I listened to it last night for the first time in a couple months, and remembered why I was cursing that they didn't end up on my mp3 player for my trip. They're really good, and hey, playing crokinole on their band pic!

Good Morn' Colonel.

I haven't check them out yet, other then one song on regular R3 rotation, and from what I've heard of that I'm sure I'd enjoy the album.

I don't have an album of the week yet, BUT, I do have a new favourite song; Hayloft by Mother Mother.

I really really really really really really really really really really really really want to get that album. But can't see where to purchase it on vinyl. So can you use your special internet radio DJ skills to find out if when Attack in Black play CTO next month, if Daniel is likely to be having that record with him?

My record of the week is "Welcome to the Night Sky" by Wintersleep, which I finally got on vinyl this past week. I love the album quite a lot and it's been played start-to-finish at least once a day since getting it. And the album art passes my daughter's approval.

The other one that has been creeping in there is the Aidan Knight's Versicolour which I got the digital download for and am awaiting the vinyl.

This reminds me of the night that Great Lake Swimmers, Kate Maki, and Timbre Timber played The Aeolian, while down at CTO Jason Collett played.

I will be at The Aeolian this time again — but I might see what's still happening at CTO after.

I might actually be a club hopper.

Thanks for the reminder about this album! People like to shit on New Brunswick but anyplace that produces Julie Doiron is a place worth knowing. Will pick this up this week.

I'll be Aeoliying it that night myself. Don't know if I'll have enought steam left to head over to CTO.

I did hear a rumour though that Owen Pallett may be accepting an opening act at Aeolian...what do you know of this?

Good morning! My album of the week is Attack in Black's Years (by a thousand fingertips)! This is such a sweet record and I felt it was criminally absent from Polaris noms last year. I'm going to see them (and $100) tomorrow night! Think they'll have this one for sale there??

I am from here and I complain about New Brunswick more than anyone, that is boring, the politics are ridiculous, and its full of weird woods people with IQ's on the level of a carrot, oh and it can be a too xenophobic at times, etc., but its true we also we do have some real talented musicians that have come out of here and yes Sappyfest is a great time! Still I think we could do better.

I've been listening to the Daniel, Fred & Julie record for a while now - so good.

As for my album of the week, I'm super psyched about the release of Paul Murphy's new solo project <a href="http://www.handdrawndracula.com/hdd-postdata.html">Postdata</a>.

I want to hear more of this Daniel, Fred & Julie album but, alas, have not yet.

I'm back to old habits this week (listening to Kensington Heights) instead of new ones so sorry to be boring.

But I found out a neat fact last night at the Polaris panel with history writers (including Vish's buddy Stuart Berman - he did well): the Beatles broke here like 3 months before the US. I didn't know that.

I like it. Fun stuff. My six month old daughter perks up when she hear "Hallelujah, I'm a Bum". Its her new favorite song. She also likes "Lost at Sea Town" by the Mountains and the Trees. Good choice Vish!!

@daa1982 I will do some nosing around - I've not heard anything yet. The poster I did last week, made no mention of an opener. And I am kind of hoping the opening act is Disney on Ice at the JLC, cause that's where I will be with my daughter at 7pm.

@dawn.h I dunno if the Vish show calls someone to wake them up, but I am pretty sure I would like them to call and wake me up.

@Babs46 Great analogy! Hang down yer head, tooooom dooooooooooleeee I am really excited to hear this one on vinyl. Mono, single mic, one shot recording… seems like it should be on thick 180 gram and at 78 speed.

@everyone I hope y'all has watched Ghost World or plans to before Friday. Such a great movie. And even cooler little comic that it came from. Plus listen to the book club show on Friday, I may call in and hassle the man.

I Have watched Ghost World. Don't know if I'll get my hands on the comic prior to Friday.

I also got myself into some trouble, I sent an entry to Vish re: the Book Club of a Book and Movie I entirely made up as a joke, but Vish liked it and wanted to do it. I had to confess that it was all a lie.

Vish: You stopped doing it? (I haven't had a chance to catch the streamed audio lately) But that was so cute! You should totally start it again. Can you call Toronto? If not, London? Haha. Maybe you can call London in February when I visit John for Wilco. Two for one deal.

This album is unreal. As one that spent many of time in Sackville NB, my opinion is perhaps bias however if you are seeking some old time folk, look no further. Can't wait to see Attack in Black tomorrow night at the exchange here in Regina. Unfortunately, Julie is no longer on their tour schedule...and Fred....I miss Fred...I'm looking for a friend who knows where he is...
