Dozens of artists across the country are throwing their weight behind the effort to raise the cash needed for the massive operation that will be required to rebuild Haiti. If I've missed any upcoming benefit concerts, please post in the comments and I'll add them to the list.

Some of Vancouver's top writers, bands, comics, and performers will put on a great party:

George Bowering Canadas acclaimed poet and author.

MC Charles Demers a very funny man - frequent contributer to CBCs The Debaters, co-host of CityTVs The List, and author of Vancouver Special, and Prescription Errors.

Other performers include:

David Chariandy - author of Soucouyant a Governor General's Literary Award nomination for Fiction, a Gold Independent Publisher Award for Best Novel, and the Scotiabank Giller Prize longlist.

Anne Stone - senior editor at Matrix Magazine and, as of fall 2007, holds a fiction imprint at Insomniac Press. She is the author of three novels: jacks, Hush, and, most recently, Delible. Chosen as one of thirty-five Books of the Year for the Globe and Mail

Morgan Brayton - writer/performer of the award-winning and critically acclaimed one-person shows Girls Like Me and Morgan BraytonGets Physical. She was one-half of the comedy duo The Crawford Twins and a former member of the popular sketch troupe 30 Helens. Sharing the stage with the likes of Janeane Garofalo, Elvira Kurt, Julie Goldman and Scott Thompson, Morgan has been a featured performer at Torontos Were Funny That Way Festival and the Vancouver Comedy Festival..

The Railway Club in Vancouver is having a show this Sunday (Jan 24) with door proceeds going to Haiti Emergency Relief.

If you're in Vancouver and are free on Sunday night, you should definitely come out :)

The Aeolian Hall in London, ON is having a benefit TONIGHT, January 21st. Featuring Emm Gryner. Its pay what you can, doors are at 6:15 and they are hoping to raise $10,000.

Early tallies put the amount raised at $15,000!!!

But, that wasn't an official count. And, they're still collecting at an event tonight. I am guessing they're going to end up closer to $20,000 when all is said and done.

Which is amazing beyond words when consider this event was cobbled together from a conversation last Friday afternoon. By Sunday the artists were lined up and I had the poster completed and the message went out to the community.

I am humbled and inspired by the way this community came together and with so much passion and care.

That this sudden attention to Haiti, which has suffered so much at the hands of almost every powerful nation, as well as other natural disasters, will give it the restitution it is due.

Already the IMF has had to back down on impossed loan conditions because of world pressure. From Democracy Now!:

"IMF Drops Conditions on $100M Haiti Loan

The International Monetary Fund has backed off an effort to impose new loans on Haiti. Last week, the IMF said it would provide Haiti with $100 million under an extension of a previous loan. The initial funds imposed conditions including wage freezes for public sector workers, inflation controls and price hikes for electricity. But after public outcry, the IMF released a statement claiming its $100 million loan would now come in the form of an interest-free grant."

However the goodwill now being shown by millions, will also bring out the worst in others.

It is important that we guard against the opportunity for the corruption and greed that these vast sums of money will inevitably bring.

Not just now, but when eyes have turned away from Haiti again, and they are vulnerable to profiteering.
