the only time I ever got excited about being close to a sweaty musician was standing directly in front of Gord Downie at the Horseshoe in Toronto. That is one sweaty man (and if you've seen the Hip play you KNOW how sweaty he gets) and it definitely landed on me at some point. I was more in awe about being so close to The Hip that my legs were getting smashed against the shin-high stage to care about any sweat hitting me.

I think if you get covered in blood/sweat/tears at a show that means you are within firing distance, which means you care enough to be that close.

Or you're a photographer. I've shielded my camera from sweat, water, booze, you name it. And if I know its a dirty show, I don't tend to dress up.

Bloodlines on your playlist for today? Maygen Kardash, aka Tawny Owl (I think I have that right), is bloody good.

I'm more pumped to get sweaty with the band as in they're playing their hearts out and I'm dancing my ass off. I don't need any more memento's than a ticket stub just so the memories don't get lost in the abyss of my mind. Keeping blood, sweat, tears or body hair of a band seems a little creepy to me.

@Alex - I was getting pumped last night thinking about collaborating on some classic covers from the R3 catalogue. (and again when I was listening to the Extended Play podcast, make sure to get it, everyone!) I know that matt, moe, calculust, Absotively? sounded interested in that...so if you aren't going to be in on FAWM (i'm still not sure about that one, but why not try is what I'm thinking...) you know i'm gonna be hassling you for some piano and vocal tracks

Personally I could do without another person's blood on my shirt, on my wall, whether it's from a famous person or not. However, I can see why it would have appeal to some, as it can be used to visually express what is being said in the music. Iggy Pop was able to convey his nihilism through his bloody visual performance, for example. To me it's just a biohazard, especially when one considers all the blood based pathogens we know of these days.

To fit the theme, I suggest Maybe Smith's  "bloody nose"

You may be right....this show was about 5-6 years ago.  We made a pretty big day of it, then got to House of Blues early and were first in line.  We used the rotation system for adult beverage replenishment and offload, so the hours before the show were pretty much a blur.  We met a lot of really cool people that day.....Buffalo seemed to stick out in my mind, but The Hip Replacement could have been from Kelowna.  At any rate, we all had a blast hanging out and it was a great show!!!

Man, I'm sure there's been shows where there have been blood.  I really just am drawing a blank , trying to remember those all age, hardcore, matinee shows.

I don't really want blood on me, even if whomevers bleeding on me is "HIV NEGATIVE" (just ask the Coachella fans who saw Fucked Up).  I don't mind sweat, that's fine.  I'm probably sweaty too.  Depends on the mood though.  I wouldn't want to be sweaty for Royal Wood.  Being sweaty for Pride Tiger on the other hand, fitting.

If Pride Tiger don't go down in the Candian Rock n Roll Hall of Fame for being too good for their own good, they should probably just get sweatiest band.  The drummer stinks.  STINKS.

and speaking of sweaty Gord Downie, I wonder how hot the Sadies must get underneath those full suits??? Jeebus.  At least they aren't like Danko Jones and Sweat Blood.

I once grabbed Big Rude Jake's beer by mistake after a show and took a big swig from it before I noticed it was the wrong bottle. BRJ noticed and was not impressed methinks. He was too polite to shed my blood though.

YSP! WSD! is the Peaks' 'Check This Out' artist for today and are playing Laura Palmer's Palm...just went for a lunch break and heard that (also Body of Years) I really hope this radio station starts making money, but if it has to be subsidized by uncle Jimmy Pattison I don't care...

I guess I'm funny. I like actually watching a band play, as opposed to dancing. Of course, I'm not a big dancer to begin with...I just like watching what they're doing up there. It's especially fun with a big group like the Tom Fun Orchestra. There's so much going on up there on stage that I'd rather watch and try to pick out the parts the various instruments are playing and such.

It probably looks to people around me like I'm not enjoying myself, but that's not true at all. Part of the reason is that I'm a hack on a few different instruments (and especially rhythm instruments like drums and bass) so I like watching what they're doing, usually thinking "wow! I could never pull that off"

well, that's a real bummer. I was hoping maybe they'd be touring this summer or something.

I'm good without a blood shirt I don't think I want one with someone else's blood on it.  I'm good with getting all sweaty dancing at a show but other people sweat on you is a bit gross.

Story:

I was a the Monotonix show during Sled Island and I the lead singer up while he was standing on the crowd singing and his leg was real sweaty and it was kind of gross.

Thank you for putting my thoughts into words.  If you haven't seen/heard a British folk band called Bellowhead play, I recommend watching this video.  They are an amazing 13 piece band that you cannot help but watch while they play because of all thats going on!  As a musician, another reason I don't dance is to take lessons from them, see how they perform, how they play, how they act.  These all help people who want to learn this (sounds like you) and I totally feel that live music is a much better way to learn than listening to cds.

can i play? my sax is in ontario, but i'm pretty good. and as referenced before, i play a mean cowbell.

@alex, im also better with sheet music. but once i've got it, i can probably do without.

well, I'd be stretching a LOT to call myself a musician, but I do like to watch bands play

I'm just going to record some guitar tracks (I don't know in what software suite yet, it'll be at my buddies place, he has a little mixing board and a good mic...if there is suggestions for a recording program let me know) and then share the files out to whoever wants to get in on the fun...i knew someone else had chimed in about playing, couldn't remember, sorry :) didn't you say you have a guitar that you've been aiming to get going on too? I would really like to do failsafe. 3 chords, easy enough to sing too....if we got R3'ers from across the country to put a vocal track down i'd be very pumped

@Alex - I know you're just new in the game but that's ok...I can't play most stuff without getting a tab for it from online...if I find one for Time Breaks down (or on the crazy chance I can figure out guitar parts) I can transcribe to music for you

K, just to clarify, are you going by "boders" or "borders"?  I just wouldn't want to be calling you something you're not...

I don't know if anybody has mentioned Marc Quinn yet, but he was a YBA who created a mold of his head and filled it entirely with his own blood (titled Self or, often Bloodhead).  I never saw Bloodhead while in the UK, but I did see Alison Lapper on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar.  To sum things up, England is awesome.

All I'm saying is don't even bother trying to avoid getting blood sprayed on you.  Don't spend the ride to the venue thinking about how you might be out of the blood zone at the show.  Don't trouble to hide behind the guy in front of you.  Don't think standing all the way at the back of the pit will help.  But your explanation of all the blood stains makes for good entertainment throughout the night.  Tell people you were at a Gwar show and they look at you like you just walked in from 1991.

Yeah for sure, give me the song and I'll see what I can do. Playing by ear isn't my forte (I'm classically trained so I've spent most of my piano playing days reading music) but I can get it if given enough time. And I need to work on being better at that sort of thing anyways!

@hgummo - This is the Bend Sinister track I was talking about. Just out of curiousity, do you have a female relation by the name of Jamie? A Jamie Gummo came to my highschool for 1 year...most of the girls were ok with seeing her go, as every guy in the school was 'crushing' on her (pg13 phrasing is funny...that was so weird to type out..)

Haha... crushing. That made me laugh. And no, I don't have any relation named Jamie as far as i know. I guess there are more Gummos out there than I realized!

wellll i dunno. i don't think it would be a good idea to use me for a vocal track. i've never sung in "public" before! to be completely honest, if i followed with training i'd be good, but don't have a very good range anymore, or much confidence.

mind you, i'm not familiar with the track, so i think in the end it will depend on that.

wanted to keep the descriptive language clean just in case she was your sister or something...and it's sorta disrepectful language anyways that us guys use in HS..

That Bend Sinister track is awesome! I love it! If nothing else, thanks for getting me to listen to that. 

I believe the first chord is something like an F sharp & A sharp. He played a lot of black keys so I think it was in some kind of key I am unfamiliar with. I've had no progress on figuring this out, I was having more luck with the Ducktales theme which is based of a Jazz scale (would help if I knew some jazz scales!).

Hmm.. ok. this could be tricky, especially since I don't actually have a piano which makes practicing kind of difficult. But I'll give it my best shot. We'll see how it goes.

Blood & sweat?  I guess I'm okay with it, although I'm sure other people find it sort of gross.  I was preparing a Halloween Camping display a few years ago and sliced my hand open pretty good.  I was standing next to a skeleton and thought, "why not?"  A number of people asked what I used to make the cool blood effect on the skeleton.  I just pointed to the scar on my hand...

there's some 3 inches of blood..nice

if you search through the podcasts, there's an episode about the evolution of a song (or something like that) that's all about the different versions of Failsafe, 'cuz there was an AC Newman in-studio session a few years ago where he first did the song (and Coco Culbertson was playing bass with him). Not sure if that session is still kicking around - it was 2 versions ago now (2 versions of the website. It was in the days of www.liveconcerts.org or whatever the URL was)

Evolution of failsafe must still exist somewhere, Grant replayed it a few weeks ago, I think it was the Christmas Eve Eve show...
