When I was happily settled in to my dead end first job out of college and chatting it up with a down on her luck pal and our friend's Mom came along and told us we both needed to get our act together because while we had jobs we didn't have careers and we needed careers.  I'm sure she had given that advice to her daughter for years to no avail but for some reason it lit a fire under me to improve my work situation and I did.  Best advice I ever got.

In a similar manner my dad has told me going out in the winter to do something. "Ya know you can't put on a layer that you didn't wear but you can always take one off."

Which is advice I have passed onto a few people when going out to do something in winter conditions.

Sometimes I'll give my sister advice, but she'll never take it. The one time she did was when I told her to unplug the toaster before fishing a broken piece of bread out of it with a butter knife.

Best advice I ever got was from my brother.

He said

"Stay in your lane."  This statement can apply to a multidue of situations from dealing with unruley people at work to relationships that have gone south.

My parents gave me the relationship advice that they say is why their marriage works so well:

"Never go to bed angry"

I've taken that as an adage for communication. Don't stay quite if something is bothering you with the person you love, even if you don't feel justified in your feelings or you think they won't like it, talk it out now rather than later. It's not always easy but I think it works. They've been married for 28 years now and are in the age group with the highest divorce rate (married young <21).

you're a hopeless romantic for the ages (I'm thinking of our talk about divorce rates awhile back) Me too. I don't suppose that Casablanca is one of your all time favourite movies too?

re:Shane - what I gather from his on air persona is that he'll mostly be joking around to keep you in a good mood most of the time, but judging from his songs he can be a sage voice as well...as Martha says, that's a good thing

@alex - I'd recommend watching The Treasure of Sierra Madre as a Bogart film to see, even slightly ahead of Casablanca. Greed in action. And hilarious. Many many bugs bunny cartoons made sense after seeing that movie (although Casablanca has a healthy share of toon references out there too)

The Peak has been playing this tune (Hawksley) quite a lot. Good on them.

and we mean it.

- never let 'em see you sweat.

- show confidence, even if you're faking it.

- you can't trust anyone, family included. (my uncle drilled that one into me. on the surface, it sounds incredibly harsh. it took me many years to finally grasp exactly what he was trying to say.)

- you can't do everything by yourself.

- go big or go home. (i sort of live by this. makes it hard to finish projects..)

- love with everything in you, and live like there's no tomorrow cause someday there won't be. (i had been told that by various people, previously mentioned uncle included. but it took his death when i was 16 for it to really sink in. he was 29.)

whenever i need advice, i can always count on my best friend, katie. she is harsh when i need to hear it, and understanding when i need it most. she will always tell me the truth, no matter how much it hurts. i may not always take her advice, but her words will stay in the back of my brain. i always tell her after: "ya know... you were right." and she says "it'll be ok."

i am thankful to have her as my best friend.

Or as I called it yesterday or maybe 2 days ago, a snarky emoticon.
