I don't think it will become the norm mainly because how long do you think it will take till you loose the glasses(Me personally 2 min after opening the box). Also I saw Avatar in 3D and it gave me a headache.

I don't even like seeing 3-D movies in the theater (like keydive, I've gotten headaches that way, and I haven't really found any benefit to make it worth the extra few bucks they add on to already expensive movie tickets).  I'll pass on viewing them at home as well.  I already have HD, no need for anything even more fancy.

I don't think it'll be the norm but i'm sure we'll see more and more 3D pics each year...especially in the summer and near Christmas

I watched Firday the 13th 3-D at home. Those flimsy, cardboard red and blue glasses make it pretty difficult, but if you could have a home set like the ones they give out at Avatar that would make it much better.

Still, I would rather save the experience for the theatre. And for the record, I liked the scary spears coming out at me more than the vetigo I got watching those endless walking-on-high-tree branch scenes.

Yeah I saw it in Imax and I don't think I would have enjoyed it any better because it was in 3D or that it added anything visually to it (this may have been because of the headache). I'm a fairly light sensitive person as it is so that might be why I got the headache. I also,  just can't see myself sitting at home wearing those glasses to watch a movie.

3D - 2 bad eyes = 1 bad combo.  It sucks, but when I watch 3D anything I just can't get the full effect.  Put on 3D glasses over prescription glasses and you get a psychadelic blur.  Take off the scrips and put on the 3D's, and I just get a blur.  Before the eyes went bad, though, I recall some cool 3D movie experiences.  Tripping while watching Attack of the Killer Tomatoes at an all night show in Penetang, ON, when we were kids comes to mind....or maybe I imagined it. 

I think that 3D will eek it's way into becoming more of a normality as the technology gets embraced and improved. It won't take over 2D projection until they figure out how to get rid of the glasses (which I guess would make it more of a hologram kind of thing) although I was joking that I should start putting out designer 3D glasses and corner this emerging market.

I personally love the 3D and it'll help if they stop treating it so gimmicky. Just look at this poster, it's ridiculous and makes people think of stupid gimmicks where as this one makes it look like it's at least attempting to be a serious horror movie. Still, the gimmicks were kinda hilarious in that movie a la "Dude! That guy's jaw just flew across my face!" and it was fun. That was the first Real D 3D movie I saw and I was just impressed by the sense of depth it added to every single shot and have as since felt the same way about it.

The movie industry is trying to find a new level to take movies to and this is it and I really like it. We need more dramatic 3D features I think before people start to take 3D more seriously. Avatar has to be making good headway though.

Gawd I hope not! 3D makes me feel quesy. Although, judging by the hype, if it does catch on, it may surpass blu-ray in popularity. I think I'll hold off on getting a blu-ray player for a few more years and see what the verdict is then.

And the Brassholes (who are basically The Secretaries' brass section).

I don't much care about the Olympic Torch, but I may check out the relay anyways, because I do like seeing The Secretaries.

Yep, I'd have to concur with you as far as animated fare goes from the big studios; just as 3D rendering has all but replaced the 2D hand drawn style.

@Christine - that sucks. Where's a neuroscientist when you need one who can explain what the deal with that it is. I can't remember what it is though that affects whatever percentage of people that makes them sick watching simulated 3D..I'd bet dollar's to donuts that it's something that eventually will be alterable/removed from your experience. That aside I'm not affected and Avatar in 3D was really enjoyable. The story was - ok. But I can think of countless things I'd love to see in 3D. But I doubt I'd like to see everything that way(right now anyways. 20 years I'm sure I'll have come around to it..) The first thing to my mind after a the first minutes of Avatar is how much I would want to see Planet Earth shot with the same technology. Start filming again BBC! The Vancouver Aquarium has a '4D' feature that uses misted water, blown air, bubbles, smell and video clips that come from the Planet Earth doc...in 3D. I wonder if those were reshot?

Part personal interest, part work.  I am doing research in computer-assisted surgery and briefly investigated the use of 3D displays to help surgeons better visualize anatomical structures while they are operating.  

f the past is an indicator (what with the talk of cyclical fads) then 3D will only last and become the norm if the pornography industry picks it up.

what i want to know is where is my peripheral tv before this 3d tv bandwagon runs me over. i think that a home theatre would be much better with a convex screen ala imax than having to wear glasses over my glasses.

That's mostly true for computer animated movies, I think.  But there's still some market for non-computer animation, so I think we'll continue to see a few 2D animated movies.  After all, the charm of animated movies is not in how perfectly life-like they are.

Filming in 3D shouldn't be that hard—you just need two cameras.  Expensive, yes, with special equipment and more complicated editing and special effects, but not incredibly difficult.

That's how you make a witty yet trenchant statement in a blog post! Obviously porn will pick 3D up. For those not aware of the real world applicability of the power of porn, VHS began to outpace and quickly replace Beta after a large producer of pornographic videos opted to use VHS for their productions. obviously they weren't the only big studio to have sway, but they most certainly and some swing. Same thing happened with bluray and HD-DVD (i think that's what the competing format was called..)

Has anyone seen the 3D U2 movie?  It is live action 3D and apparently uses fancy technology to reduce headaches, dizziness etc..?

@boders:  The distance between viewpoints is chosen so 'most people' don't experience discomfort.  There are also some people that can't 'see' in 3D using this trick (different image in each eye) and more that can't do it well.   

Yeah.  Which is not to say that we won't see 3D movies with decent plots (eventually), just that if the decent plot is present, the 3D doesn't matter so much.

Or: I enjoyed the 3D in Coraline, but I suspect I'd have been just as charmed in 2D.

Or: I like Kingdom of Loathing, and I'd be unhappy if they changed the graphics.

My personal belief is that movies are much the same as music, or any other form of art.  The best music, such as what we hear on R3, is created with a low budget relative to the "blockbuster" music that is out there receiving mainstream radio play.....the Black-Eyed Peas, John Mayer, whatever happens to be playing when you switch over to "normal" radio.  Likewise, in my opinion, the best movies are Indie flicks made on a short budget and thus never promoted or played in "normal theatres".  They are typically long on story and integrity, and short on effects....I can't imagine some of these movies working in 3D, let alone the creators having the bucks to film them that way.   

I'd partially agree with [50]. On balance you are probably correct. Certainly re: dollars invested vs. quality output that is bang on. But the big guys do put out the odd gem. (quite often by mistake, but sometimes with intent..)

I haven't seen Avatar, so I can't comment, but I already had the impression that it was no Coraline.  So yeah.

visually nice, but if you didn't see that last frame of the film coming pretty much from the first frame you need to read more.

The 3D was interesting. Mostly it was interesting because at no point did anybody open a can of peanuts with those coiled up spring snakes in it and send them flying into the audience. The 3D just...was.

Good stories will always be good stories. Some directors will choose to film them in 3D, some directors won't.

I'm not really sure what neurological difference may cause people to have difficulty seeing in 3D.  Anything that effects your eyes ability to work together in coordination can affect binocular vision.  For example, one could have some weak muscles in one of your eyes that your brain compensates for in day to day life but causes problems when watching 3D movies.  

For those that have trouble watching 3D movies, you may want to consider getting your binocular vision tested.  There are some simple tests here and here, but obviously an eye doctor is a better bet. (That site offers a pretty good description of how 3D viewing works, what can go wrong and what can be done to correct it)

The ultimate gimicky 3d movies can be found at Disneyland.  I can't tell you how many times I got 'sneezed' on. (Cleverly timed sprays of water)

I think as 3D movies become more common, the movies will be less about showing off the 3D and more about enhancing the movie itself.  I enjoyed watching the movie "Up" for this very reason.

It might just be my selective memory at work, but the stream on the weekend seems to feature more great hip hop to my ear. This weekend's show anyways was...

It's a fad and a gimmick!  A trick to get people out to the theatre,  and more importantly,  a trick to force theatres to switch from film projection to digital projection (which is actually a good thing).  It is much easier and cheaper for a studio to ship a digital copy,  than it is to shoot,  develope,  store,  and transport film reels.

re:the tech serving the film, not being the reason for it.

I've yet to see Up, but everything I've read and heard about it seems to indicate that it has a great story. So if I were to see it in 3D it would be a nice extra enhancement, not the sole basis and need for telling the story. And that's the way to use 3D.

3D in the living room?  Heck yes!  Sports in 3D would be incredible!  Motorsports in 3D would be amazing! 

Even better...Cooking shows in 3D!  Can you imagine watching your alfredo sauce boil up in 3D?  How about bacon grease splatters in 3D?  Whoa!  The simplest would be the best, though.  Watching the toaster pop.   DUCK!!!

Awww....thanx.  I like to see the humorous side of things.  The way I see it, there is nothing so serious that it can't be made better with a little laughter.

Awwwww......so sorry I had to step off for awhile and help my dual citizens with their homework.  I would have loved to have engaged in more inane banter with y'all.  I say y'all for the purposes of assimilation.....it tricks the natives in to giving me Lorne Greene-like levels of trust.  All part of the plan.....
