Re Last Meal: I don't think I can pick a final meal...but I know it would end with white-chocolate-cheesecake with raspberry coulis...maybe thats all i would eat.

I would have cereal, because if you kept on adding milk you could make it last forever!

True, I'd say most listeners here fall in 3 categories:

1) in post secondary education

2) at a boring office job

3) none of the above, just sick of crappy music.

But even when I worked at mines and big construction jobs, you'd be surprised at how far reaching Radio3 is.  One time, I went into a bulldozer to ask the big beardy redneck guy what was up, and he was rockin Corb Lund or something Radio 3-y in the cab.

Does that mean Radio3 makes him smarter? No probably not.  But he'd learn more about culture which, to me, is a form of social intelligence.

But to reiterate point #3, I think most "intelligent" people think of music as a puzzle to be challenged by.  I get challenged by new stuff, so I'm constantly trying to hear something different.  That's where Radio3 comes into play in my life.  So I think it's a natural progression to want to experience new things

Haven't seen The Road but I liked Eastern Promises, though I didn't expect to see Viggo's Mortenson.  Still, it was a very memorable scene.

As for food, Every time I've been to Vegas and the buffets and presented with all kinds of food I usually end up with exactly what suckamc described for his last meal.  But the Swordfish/Filet selection at Benihana is awfully good too.  However, in the end I think I'd end up with BBQ.  Burnt ends, Corn Bread, Hush Puppies, Potato Salad and dessert.  I'd eat until it's painful.  Have a glass of Port.  Then I'd go back to smoking Marlboro reds until the time came to kick the bucket.

Breakfast for dinner is the best. I'm partial to a BLT with cucumber and green pepper as well...throw in some OJ, some coffee and I am one happy camper. If I had this meal while camping, all the better.

I think I'd have to have add a Fin Du Monde to my order as well. Also a tonkatsu cutlet and karaage. Damn, this is too hard! I'd want some bourbon in there too somewhere.

Oh, also, I want the cheese curds to be made from a French Monastary in rural Manitoba, the gravy be from the stock of hutterite chickens, the Fries be Russett potatos from rural Manitoba, the filet mignon can be from one of my dad's cows.

Also, I just realized, I want a half pound ground sirloin burger, made, again, from the beef from one of my dad's cows, topped with the crown royal BBQ sauce that CDNz1 made, and Manitoban pork, and on a fresh bun baked from the best bakery in Winnipeg. No cheese, I hate cheese

That would be fantastic, but I'm pretty sure I took my hat off half way through the show so sadly no. But Spencer and I did have a short conversation.

My last meal would be Poutine with steak from Frite Alors! paired with a Boh. And a guinness for dessert.

Very West Coast, I don't think we can get them here at all.  We have crazy cheap lobster though, and I could eat a few of those given the chance... :)

I just realized, whatever happened to that R3 Barbecue I was going to have at the farm last summer? Wow, I forgot all about that.

I can't think of a worse food to eat while watching a band, than Woodhands and Cheesecake.

You'd be too busy dancing to eat it, and would probably end up wearing it or throwing it.  It'd get real ugly real fast. 

Even if you were to make a Woodhands inspired cheese cake, WoodCheeseHandsCake doesn't sound that appetizing.

I just assume everyone in Manitoba is a redneck, although it's a lie, but every social I ever go to, Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy, Whisky for my Horse, Fishin in the Dark and something by Brooks n Dunn is played a minimum of 3 times EACH, oh and redneck woman. Actually the university's pub has a karaoke night once a month, and 50% of the songs sung are country (especially redneck woman)

If they were playing in Saskatoon tonight I would go see them and Spencer and I could fall in love. Last night he said he wanted to start a motorcycle gang so I could join that and we could ride off in to the sunset together. But since they're playing in Winnipeg I can't make it in time :( Once again my future looks bleak.

aha! I have actually seen a study based on my theory (which is actually where I stole my theory from).

I forget the name of it, so you can't reference or fact check anything I say, but in summary:

Sting puts on headphones inside of a CAT Scan.  They play him random songs and see how his brain reacts to them.

The stuff he likes, his brain fires on all cylinders and is very similar to the patters he makes when he does crossword puzzles.  In fact, he was uncommon as most people are either Left or Right brain listeners.... he sent info back and forth.

the stuff he didn't like (e.g. elevator music): instant boredom.  Nothing happens in his head.  Same when the played Nickelback I believe.

I would want my last meal to be breakfast. It's the meal that disappoints me the least. I'd want eggs (sunny side up) with 2 pieces of buttered whole wheat toast. With a glass of chocolate milk. yum.

I may have had too much to drink last night so I don't know that I'm feeling up to another adventure.  I've never seen Billy the Kid but I saw pictures on the fb event and she is super cute, so maybe I'll go. Maybe an afterwork nap will cure me. Tonight is also Rae Spoon at the exchange...

Deal!  But you also gotta help me find a point and shoot that takes decent concert photos while you're here.  I've written off Canon. Seen some okay results from SONY.  Really the best I've seen have been from iPhones which is really annoying 'cause I keep holding out for them to bring the iPhone to my carrier and it keeps not happening.

Hah, in that case I can't realy aregue with you.  I might look that up PBS special, or the book of similar name that joenopride suggested (thanks, Joe!).

I'll concede that intelligence might change how you perceive music.  I just won't agree that this means that people who listen to the same music as you are smarter.

not only are cognitive biases, neuroprocessing and the difficulties of determining (and defining) 'g', but I'm also salivating over Alex's description of his pie from heaven. I know exactly what he means when he says 'Too tart for most people'...

I think Absotively hit the essence of the trouble with correlating 'good taste in music' (for our purposes, if you are here listening to R3 you have good taste in music..whoops, a bit indier-than-thou there!) and intelligence on the head when she pointed out the fact that our socio-economic class allows us access to vehicles like R3 (work a desk job, a student etc with access to a pc and highspeed tubes) and that alone means that we will score higher in measured intelligence (generally), but there's all sorts of caveats and problems with measuring that intelligence

Did I get credit on-air for suckamc's last meal suggestion? Oh no...The carnivore in me could do with a giant rib-eye as a last meal...and fixins...garlic mash potatoes, corn on the cob, some kind of salad, not sure what exactly...white wine before dinner, red with...and then apple pie and coffee to finish (made in the style as described by Alex above)

I also hope it has bacon on it, so I can sing Joy of Cooking as I eat.

I'll just throw in my meaningless anecdote that trends with Matts. I think I have a good level of respect for all my friends intelligence and taste in music. If I were forced to plot those on a graph, you find that my perception of intelligence rises with what I think is there taste in music. I think most peoples anecdotes follow a similar path. While some link between musical preferences and intelligence may be buried there, this story says more about me than anything else.

Hey I'm back.

sooooo there was another cardboard package left on my door again... JILL BARBER!!!!!

So that means this weekend I need to get spins out of Attack in Black, Owen Pallett, and now Jill.  Trying to fit that in might be difficult, with Billy the Kid at one bar, and Geoff Berner & Rae Spoon at another.

And to back up your earlier post, my graph of my friends would look the same.

The ones I have the most interesting discussions, non music related, always seem to listen to music that trends in my direction.  My friends that are into Metallica/Tool/Nirvana/That's it because Nothing comes close.... are dumb.  Doesn't mean that they aren't good people with big hearts, but I wouldn't ever take their advice on anything.  Maybe if I wanted to get a good Workout routine, but that's about it.

I just find that those guys are so narrow minded that they refuse to try new things.  If you don't try new things you can't learn.  If you can't learn you can't become more intelligent. (This is also assuming intelligence can be gained, and it's not born with.)

Notes from the show:

-They will NOT play Northern Towns.  No matter how much you beg before, during, and after the show.  Even having Sir Vish request it didn't sway them.  If that doesn't do it, nothing will!

-When did they become a tweenager band? I was way too old to be standing up front and drinking.

-I think they're getting kinda sick of touring.  And by kinda, I think really.

-The songs all sound really different from the album.  I didn't even recognize Young Leaves. Their version of I Could Turn last night was the best I've heard them  play it.  And they dedicated it to "the guy in the Blue Jays hat who bought Phil a beer".  (two beers actually, drummers are thirsty)

-The opening band "Lonesome Weekends" (featuring Marshall from Rah Rah) is going to be making some noise.  I was very impressed, and I think they'll give Rah Rah & Library Voices a run for their money as Best Regina Band.

True.  I mean, I think everyone goes through awkward music phases in high school.  I used to be a Punk Rocker.

I have a shirt from about 2001, that has George Bush's face on it with DENY EVERYTHING written on the back, from the band Good Riddance.

I also used to think 80s metal/rock was the cat's pyjamas.  I remember making an AC/DC Mixtape when I turned 16 and driving around for hours thinking I'll never take this thing out of my stereo.

.....but that was when I was 16.  I just don't understand how they can listen to the same songs for 10 years.  I guess it's the same reason why Classic Rock stations have been playign the same songs for 35 years

hahahh yeah. I loved (and love) the Pumpkins...but I went through them sooooo much, most of highschool, even though they were broken up for a good part of it) Then I went through Radiohead phase, Pearl Jam phase, Dave Mathews Band phase where I just consumed everything from them but not a whole lot else. And I've got my classic rock loves like everyone else. Mr. Young, Mr. Bowie, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Mr. Hendrix, the Band and so and so forth...

I didn't really ask them anything interesting.  Ian's cool to talk to, he's way too nice to be in a rock band. haha.

The most random part of the night was Party Beard standing in front of me all night.  She finally introduced herself to me, talked for a while, then we went to go get my LP signed.  I'll write the captions below:

....I'm almost postive that it was Kayli (PB) behind me when I was talking to Dan.  Which makes the whole thing funnier because he had said it on stage as well earlier in the night.

What I find very interesting, is how similar a lot of our blogger brains are.

I did all the same phases as you, (probably different artists), but I'd just devour an entire genre at a time and then move on to the next one.

Which is weird because that leaves large chunks of my music collection untouched at times.

Do you ever go back and listen to it?

I have some staple albums that I'll play when I'm in very specific moods, but typically I can't keep up with new music so those albums are getting played less and less.

This all sorta makes sense, I did a search on itunes and 5000 of my 7000 songs are from the last decade.  If I could plot this, I'm sure you'd see 2006-2009 released songs exponentially rising up from any other set of years. I seriously do try my best and listen to everything in my library (what's the point of having it in there if you aren't going to listen to it) but it's so damn hard.

I have some 'classic' albums for me that I go back and listen to nostalgically every now and then. Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie both get spins from me everyonce in awhile. Same with Foo Fighters The Color and the Shape, Green Day Dookie (maybe even some kerplunk and insomniac too), Nirvana Unplugged in New York.

So.... out of the last 50 songs I've recently played on my Itunes only 2 (Velvent Underground  - I Can't Stand It & Replacements - Bastards of Young) is NOT from this decade.

The next 200 trend that as well.  I could probably expropriate this into a graph if I had the motivation.

speaking of graphs: GraphJam is blocked at work.  Same with DrunkJaysFans... both sites that I had visited yesterday. Does that mean IT is spying on me, or do you think there's an automated system that goes ahead and blocks things.  Oh god, I hope not.  If they block R3 I'll cry.  I'm serious.

My lunch hours are spent in my car with the newspaper & Craig for an hour. Sirius radio saved my sanity by providing R3 and BandeAparte.

Home R3 is on my desktop and beamed to my home theatre by way of this little FM transmitter.

that is cruel. Days that I forget my headphones are awful. I've gone across the street to get earbuds relatively cheap from London Drugs before. Twice. I won't feel so bad next time that happens.
