The food themed scents thing seems to be a trend. There are those horribly sexist Axe body spray ads on TV, where the dude is made of chocolate and the women can't help themselves (as women are apparently controled by their olfactory systems).

The food smells don't do it for me, but I do know of actual perfumes, such as Theirry Mugler's Angel, that have chocolate undertones. And I know of women who like this scent, but I think food smells are best kept on food. I even can't stand the smell of food on my hands after eating. But then again, maybe I'm biased because I hate the Axe body spray ads.

Lemon, I love lemon.

Of the food scents.  I can barely stand it when my fingers smell like what I just ate and usually wash my hands right after a meal.  Although smelling like a turkey dinner wouldn't be too bad, except for it making me hungry allll the time.

I swear, those who listen and blog to Radio3 can be some of the funniest people on the web.  And by funny, I mean intentionally funny, writing lines that can make me laugh out loud.  Brightens a day like today when I'm home with speakers on, but produces bouts of self consiousness when give out a big laugh at work, then remember I've got headphones on. 

But it makes the day so much more enjoyable.  Thanks everyone.

Good point. I have an education degree, and I did one of my practicums in a junior high. Let me tell you, once that axe smell is in a classroom it's there all day.

When I hear that a boy likes Dill chips, that's for sure a check in the pro column! Definitely gets me a little "hungry" for some lovin'! 

I would wear cucumber, it's a nice, light scent, or vanilla/sugar cookie :) I can't really think of ones I would find attractive on a guy . . . maybe something cinnamon-y.  I can see licorice too.

I don't like perfume either. I can't stand it. It's actually not very good for you in general to breathe that stuff in.

Sometimes I'll catch a whiff of vanilla on a woman.....it may or may not be intentional.  It may or may not even be vanilla, but that is what it reminds me of.  Whenever that happens, my nose goes in to full on radar alert, and the rest of me follows until the source has been identified, isolated and engaged.  I'm married, so I don't do anything about it, but it is definitely a real thing with me.

On a separate note, can anyone tell me how to "favourite" an artist on R3?  I must be stupid, or intoxicated by the ghosts of vanilla-smelling girls past, but I just don't see it. 

I'm with MoniSki - I love the smell of dill. It's just lovely. Though I don't know that it makes me feel romantically-inclined. I think the studies are referring to unconscious reactions to different scents. In my own unscientific studies, I've found fellas do enjoy the smell of a freshly baked pie or cookies. Perhaps it's a nurturing thing and the fact that the smell of baking is often associated with a woman in the kitchen...

I reckon we develop attachments to perfumes and colognes once we associate them with the people in our lives.

One last thing - Jitterbug Perfume by Tim Robbins is SUCH a great book. I'm just sayin'

@savvie - i totally get what you mean about hotsauce..i have a couple buddies who are big into 'hot sauce' ie they have no goddamn taste bud sensitivity and can take anything (I suspect Alex might fall into this group for some reason, but i'm not sure about that one) He has some great smelling hot sauces that are an instant pick me up. But I won't eat it..just too powerful

..maybe BurgerKing is trying to tap in to some sort of primal caveman/women instincts.  I'm willing to bet that a big stick would still be more effective for getting someone back to your cave then the smell of meat with no juicy satisfaction.

although a really good guy would be making her bacon...and if it was at my place i'd feel inclined to cook the bacon...damn

I know this doesn't have to do with "scent" but I read once, somewhere, that women that eat artichokes are far more likely to have an orgasm during sex that night.  I don’t know…just sayin’.

pepperhead! haha..that's great, i don't know why i've never heard a descriptor like that. I wouldn't try and say it's a chemical burn that causes lasting damage (I really have no idea what the biochemistry is), they just go way too much for me with the scovilles. I like a bit of heat...the other night I had hot wings from megabites and they were great. But to Steve they've got no kick..

They say that smell is the sense most closely associated with memory.  Maybe the aromas that resonate with us are throwbacks to other times in our live(s), and the corresponding associative emotions are called up from the odour bank imprints in our brains.  Or maybe I'm full of $hi+.

I posted this earlier today. YUM!

Put me in the herbal camp: lavender, rosemary, lemon thyme, dill, basil... all very heady to me.

The only one I really dislike is cilantro. Smells like an underarm to me.

I guess I'm a little weird, because I'm not turned on by any of the "female" scents in the study, except for lavender. And I like the smell of cherries and BBQ. And vanilla. Mmmmmm...

I've seen angel food cake - very impressed!  I'd find such a bescented individual.

Although colognes aren't my thing, I'd go for banana-nut-bread-scented shampoo or soap.  Or perhaps get some pumpkin pie for dessert on a first date: nothing subconsciously says "I'm a family man" quite like the smell of Thanksgiving.

Oooh, there's a company that sells spa and beauty products, and I've become hooked to a few of them lately. The brown sugar and margarita lines (yes, that's right, your feet can smell like margaritas...) were fantastic, but the Christmas line was sugar cookie. Everywhere I went, it smelled like cookies were baking. There's also a perfume that has 'a hint of fruit cobbler', which sounds interesting, but sadly, does not smell as good.

As for scent bringing back memories, I completely understand that. I found a really old perfume of mine the other day and it took me right back to 2004. Then I felt a little sick, because it was really awful. But if I smell Givenchy Pi anywhere, it always reminds me of an old crush. Good times.

Seriously...fresh ground coffee.  Dreeeeamy!  Every time I open a tin of coffee I'll spend 2 or 3 minutes taking in the aroma.

Maple, as in syrup.  I have no explanation for this, I just like the smell.  Anybody ever buy maple scented candles?  No?  Just me?

i keep quitting errands in favour of coffee shops, due to lack of shopping success and as it is so icky outside right now.

its very strange. im in the middle of downtown and you are 'talking' to me via the internet radio, yet i'm the only one that knows this because of my headphones...technology is the strangest thing.

Oh and oddly enough, the one smell I dislike is lavender. Even those dried lavender sachets. Lavender flavoured chocolate is alright though.

That lavender farm looks lovely! I wish there was something like that near here. Lavender fields are so pretty. And the literary teas sound wonderful! Lavender earl grey is yummy. I guess I'm pretty off and on about lavender.

Have I ever written about the time my dad accidentally put dried peas in the popcorn popper? (Don't make popcorn in the dark.) Apparently in the 2nd WW, they added ground up roasted peas to their coffee stashes to make them last longer. So my dad gave it a try. If you're a coffee flavour person, it's not a stellar addition...

Okay. Seriously. Back to work now.

It's not really coffee, but a coffee-like drink (that's best drunk black, not with milk). Supposedely, it's healthy - as in it helps detoxify the body and regulate blood sugar levels.

Andandand...if you are out picking in early spring, small dandelion leaves are great in salads (and are in those "spring mixes" that people spend a lot of $ on)

You can order online from both. I usually order a large amount because green beans, if kept dry and in a cool, dark place, will keep for up to two years. It's only after you roast and bring the oils out of the bean that they go stale fast.

One time my lovely and ever-so-talented wife was choking, and gave the universal grab the throat sign that she was in distress.  I had never been trained in how to perform the Heimlich Manouver, but I knew I had to do something.  It was weird....everything slowed down and got quiet, and I flashed back to my Gramma's kitchen when I was a boy.  Everything was incredibly vivid....the smells especially. She always wore lavender, and her kitchen always smelled of butter tarts cooking and chicken roasting.....a heavenly blend of comfort and home, and I could smell it all just as I remembered it.  Anyway, I'm flashed back in her kitchen reading a Reader's Digest article (which I really did when I was about 10) with step by step instructions on how to perform the Heimlich.  Bam, I'm back in the present, follow the steps, and a piece of sweet and sour chicken is propelled across the room....first try!!!  I'll never forget that.....
