I use to hate Third Eye Blind, but then I watch Jim Carey's Yes Man, and the rendition of Jumper was one of the funniest things ever. So I revisited the original and it now a guilty pleasure.

Hey I took your advice and bought the YSP!WSD! Album, and it was totally worth it, thanks for the suggestion. Actually I've put it on a playlist with the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album and I find they compliment each other well.

I sent an email to R3 quite a while back asking what the role of the thumbs are on the site, and never got an answer. Are the thumb-stats viewable anywhere? Do they affect which songs get played? Is there any documentation on this, and I just missed it (probably not, or Google would likely have coughed it up for me)?

Third Eye Blind are much like the Goo Goo Dolls, both had very good breakthrough albums in my opinion. TEB's self titled album was just as great as GGD's Superstar Carwash. Trouble is when the quasi ballad hits got grabbed ahold of, that was all the band could be from that point forward.

Third Eye Blind to this day still have the best cover I've ever heard of Train in Vain.

Every time I hear that Julianne song, it throws me for a loop, cause it feels like that first, TEB album. I like the song quite a bit because of that.

Believe it or not apparently I didn't have Robots thumbed up?? That is odd.

looking for some more data to purty up for us? nice! it's great to see growth right on homepage of artists and songs in catalog..i'd hope growth is there in listenership..i feel it is based on blog activity, but it'd be nice to see that in a punchy graph!

Ahhh, This Lamb Sells Condos, one of my first additions to my playlist.

It still seems strange to associate songs with Owen Pallett rather than the moniker Final Fantasy.  I'm glad he is the artist of the month as I hope that will help reinforce the name change.

BTW, I'm glad R3-30 is making use of all the data the site is producing.  I should make a point of setting some thumbs up!

I think you and I differ in what we look for in a cover. You loving Cash's version of Hurt, leads me to believe I'm right…

I may be in the minority here, but I don't necessarily want the new band to make the song "theirs" by changing it to leave their fingerprint on it. I am fine with a cover that does service to the original.

For me there's nothing wrong in saying "I love that song, I want to do it" and for it to sound the same as the original. There is a reason some songs are hits. For me rearranging it almost seems like why bother, make a new song, then.

Probably why I adore Phantom Planet's cover of Somebody's Baby.

That's not to say I hate covers that stray from the original, but when you hear it, and it sounds nothing like the original there's little reference save for a footnote it basically becomes a new song that someone wrote the lyrics for.

Case in point: Tiga's cover of Sunglasses at Night. I think half the reason people went apec-rap over it, was because it's so different.

Different can be good, yes. But different can also be different for me.

For the record I love Cash's cover, but hate the original.

In the case of Johnny Cash I really loved the NIN version and the Downward Spiral that it was off of was one of my fave albums as a youth. But as an adult I prefer Cash's version. But I agree we most likely look for different things in covers. But I do feel covers are a tricky thing for a artist to truly pull off. If you stick to close to the original at the very best you get a good imitation, but if you stray to far off course that could be a recipe for disaster as well.

But in the case of Johnny Cash he interpreted the material in such a way that he was able to put is own stamp on it and was able to turn it into his own personal biography. But he stuck close enough to the original that it wasn't a total bastardization. Also Trent Reznor loved Cash's version, especially after he watched the video. But in a interview he also stated that he felt sadden because he felt that he lost ownership of the song.

So let me get this straight, the email that I have been editing for a week that I was about to send in for a long-range request will no longer get the chance to make it to the podcast?  If anybody's request is played, do you let us know in advance so we can listen (usually I have school during the TCNH.  I know, my life is not complete)?  Let me know please!!!

I love Me First & The Gimmie Gimmies. But what I like about them is that it is not meant to be taken seriously. The music is fun.

I also like covers of overplayed songs done in a tongue & cheek manner (which is why I loved Alanis doing My Hump). If you don't take it seriously and you get the joke than it is a thing of beauty.

The best thing a band can do is have another self-contained band within its members.  Two Hours Traffic has the Danks, The Burning Hell have way too many to count, and The Mountains & The Trees has Bird & Bear.

That is good point, once an artist shares a song with the public in a sense he is giving up a degree of ownership. For example back in my teens I felt that I owned that song, and there where many songs that spoke to me in such a way that I felt a degree of ownership. But as soon as Cash covered the song, to many it became a Johnny Cash song, and to many that became the definite version.

you could ask Maybe Smith. He has a mini-album you can download from his website for free. I believe the reason is that it is full of samples of motown music that he used as the basis for other songs.

I think if you're giving it away then it's different than selling it. I think what would happen is an artist would tell you to stop distributing it. People post themselves performing others' songs on Youtube all the time.

Michael Geist would probably know, too.

A few years ago, one of my favourite book series was made into a tv show.  In one interview, the author was asked how she felt about the changes from the books, and part of her answer was this:

"[N]othing that they do on the show affects the books — they don’t change — so my vision of these characters and their stories is intact and [the TV show creator]’s vision can take off and go places I never dreamed of."

I think that's a good way to view music covers too; if someone does a very different cover, and you don't like it or don't think it honours the original enough, well, the cover doesn't stop people from listening to the original.  It doesn't actually change the original at all.

And very rarely, an interpretation is superior to the original. For instance Joe Cocker's With a Little Help From My Friends, better than Ringo Starr's (Beatles).

Another thought: Serena Ryder's done some good covers -- her Sisters of Mercy is excellent (although I don't think she tops young Leonard C.)

Concerning Cohen's Hallelujah Jeff Buckley did a brillant cover which may even be bettter thann the original. I forgot to mention it, when I mentioned my faves. 

Since we're on the topic, thouight I'd tell you about a fun show going on tonight at the Seahorse in Halifax. Some East Coast bands we love, Mardeen, The Danks, and Boxer The Horse are doing an all-cover show featuring hits from Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, The Strokes, Teenage Fanclub, Elvis Costelo, The Clash, Abba, Weezer, Ramones, and Billy Bragg to name a few. Sounds like a time!

I remember KD Lang performing Hallelujah at the Junos a few years back and it blew me away. It was a powerful performance.

D'OH!!!  I actually had Buckley's version in my head when I was writing, and for whatever reason (probably work....stupid work) I typed Rufus.  Buckley was amazing, wasn't he?  I sure wish he could have lasted.  And yes, absolutely, K.D. Lang spine-tinglingly hammered Hallelujah!!!
