Dr. Sean Shaw here, or Onterrible on the Radio3 blog.
Radio3 has become somewhat of an obsession for me. After giving up on regular radio in 2001 I was mired in a world of napster, kazaa, and whatever else it took to get my fix. At some point 4 or 5 years ago I discovered Radio3 one day at work and it hasn't gone off since.
I feel my Canadian Alt-rock chops have been cut and sharpened over the past years listening to Radio3 all day, every day while banging away at my computer.
Knowing that Mr. Norris loves themes - I figured that I would build my playlist as a trip down memory lane, or how my musical tastes have evolved over the years.
First we'll start in Guelph, Ontario where I was kindly introduced to alcohol and live music at the tender age of 19 - yes, a late bloomer - bands like By Divine Right, Sustainer, Hawksley Workman, and Big Sugar took regular turns on my cd player.
Moving onto Fredericton, NB for my second university degree I became somewhat obsessed with In-Flight Safety, who introduced me to Jill Barber, and I still remember watching WIL play the heck out of an acoustic guitar like I've never seen before.
After a few years I found myself on the road again, across the country to Saskatoon for a third (and final) university degree. I spent a lot of times at our local concert venues - Louis, Amigos, Lydia's, and The Roxy - watching concert, after concert. Moving from rock, to alt-country, to electronic-tinged music countless nights and countless dollars have been spent on seeing some of the best Canadian acts come through Saskatoon and my yearly retreat to the Regina Folk Music Festival. Just to name a few - Broken Social Scene, The Stills, Death From Above 1979, We Are Wolves, and Chad VanGaalen...
